Chapter 239 239: Big Bad Turtle
Chapter 239 239: Big Bad Turtle
Vithrax looked at Violet in bewilderment. "But that's impossible, my entire being has been fully absorbed by this dungeon, I have no way of leaving it." He stated, yet a hint of desperate hope resided in the back of his mind at the thought of being able to escape this hell.
"Nothing is impossible, we just need to figure out how to do the impossible!" Violet stated with complete confidence in her words, unaware or more accurately uncaring of how insane they may sound.
Vithrax looked at the young void dragon before him with a hint of helplessness, knowing that it would be useless to try and push her further on the matter. So instead he decided to just keep a small flame of hope alive whilst preparing to be disappointed in the end, he wouldn't allow himself to get his hopes up for fear of them being crushed in the end.
So instead he turned his attention to the main matter at hand. "Anyway, how are we going to find and defeat this giant turtle you spoke of earlier?" Although he said that he had a pretty good idea of how Violet would actually go about doing so, he was not disappointed.
"Easy we just look for the stampede and then attack the turtle once it shows itself!" Luna and the other girls groaned slightly at the simplicity of the plan, yet at the same time were unable to think of a better idea themselves.
"Okay but what about the fight itself? Do you know its strengths? Weaknesses? How does it fight? What level is it? What's its speciality?" Vithrax spouted off, asking several pertinent questions in rapid succession and leaving Violet looking slightly frazzled at the end.
"Umm, its strong, probabally in the beginning of the late stage of tier 4. It is quite big, around the same size as you but with a thick shell and two heads. I think it will have space affinity of some kind, that or duel water and fire but I think it's more likely to have space affinity. It also has a lot of spines in its shell as well as in its tail, might shoot those spike out to attack."
Vithrax nodded at that, mostly satisfied with that information. "Well space specialists are particularly tricky to deal with, have you fought someone like that before?"
Seeing the girls nods he continued. "Well then we need to watch out for its teleports, and watch out for stray attacks coming in from awkward angles. What is each of your roles in combat?" He asked of the girls, speaking to them directly for the first time.
The girls quickly described their strengths and general roles when in combat getting a nod of understanding from the ancient dragon. He then turned towards Susan and spoke to her. "We will need to focus on keeping you in particular safe, if this beast is even slightly intelligent it will try to take you out once it learns that you can heal. You should stay on Rhyana during the fight and let her protect you whilst you focus on support."
From there he went on to speak at length about various strategies that they could all use, focusing on generalisations and basic formations. His wealth of experience from near centuries of fighting showing though as he effortlessly understood how the girls fought without even seeing another of them fight.
It was incredibly insightful for the girls, with only Olivia having ever received propper training before now, the other girls had only learnt to fight though actual fighting. So to suddenly have an experienced combatant offer advice so freely was something that they all appreciated.
Still they did not want to delay too long, so soon headed out with the intention of finding the boss and putting it down.
The group did not have to travel for too long before they felt the telltale signs of the beast tide approaching. The ground shook and the distant cries of innumerable beasts rang out in a cacophonous melody.
Not wanting to get caught up in the stampede the girls swiftly changed back into humanoid forms and climbed up a nearby tree to get out of the way. Vithrax also changed his form, but instead of changing into a humanoid he simply shrank his body down to that of an infant dragon, small enough to easily settle on one of the higher branches like the girls.
He settled down on the same limb as Olivia was sat on, the human unable to stop staring at his admittedly adorable form. He maintained his red colouration, yet his more vicious features seemed to have been smoothed out into what can only be described as a particularly cute appearance.
It came as a shock to both the ancient dragon and Olivia when her hand ended up gently patting the top of his head.
Both people froze in place when they realised what was happening, a puff of steam seemed to escape Olivia's helm as she let out an incomprehensible squeak. Vithrax however seemed to take a slightly different approach and instead opted to but his head into her still frozen palm.
So it was that Violet and Luna watched with some amusement as the still slightly terrified Olivia proceeded to give head pats to the ancient and powerful red dragon that was currently in the form of a baby dragon whilst they sat in a tree. Neither girl chose to comment on the peculiar situation out loud, but could help share a laugh between each other through their bond.
That moment of levity proceeded until the first of the beasts came into view.
Where earlier the beasts looked panicked and agitated, now a veneer of exhaustion marred a majority of the beasts. It would seem that they had been running near non stop from the giant turtle since they first saw the stampede.
As the beasts rushed past them the girls also noted with some apprehension that their were noticeably fewer beasts in the hoard than before. There was still a vast amount of beasts fleeing below, yet those slow and weak beasts seemed to no longer be a part of the main group, either dead or left behind.
They wondered what fate awaited those that got left behind by the hoard, yet did not have to ponder that for long. Soon the telltale thud of heavy footsteps rang out, this time coming much closer to the stampede than it did previously.
There the group bore witness to the sight of a blood covered turtle making steady progress. The spikes on its shell were a macabre sight, the corpses of almost a dozen beasts were impaled on them, its twin maws dripped with viscera as they slowly ate whatever unlucky beast found it way into the jaws of death.
The left head, the one with blue eyes, gulped down the last of its snack only for a blue glow to appear between its jaws, a matching glow emenating from one of the impaled corpses on its back. A moment later the corpse vanished from its shell and appeared in its mouth, confirming that this beast did indeed utilise space magic.
The girls all braced themselves as they prepared to engage the beast. Magic gathered and muscles tensed, the giant twin headed turtle steadily advanced, growing closer and closer to their tree with each step.
Yet it once again stopped, this time just out of the reach of their tree. Its noses began to sniff the air with curiosity before both heads suddenly snapped up as they instantly locked onto the girls hiding up in the branches.
A feral smile seemed to adorn its face before the orange eyes head snapped its jaws shut and a premonition of danger spiked for Violet, she unhesitatingly leapt from her spot in the tree, narrowly avoiding the fate that would have awaited her had she stayed still. As she fell she saw that the branch she had previously been sat on was now cleanly snapped in two from the attack of the beast.
It seemed like they would not be the ones able to ambush the beast, instead they would just have to fight it directly.
