Chapter 74: Unexpected Situation
Chapter 74: Unexpected Situation
The large man fixed his intense gaze on Zorvax. His face twisted into a grimace of satisfaction. "Now that your little friend is down, it’s your turn," he declared, his voice cold and resolute.
He and his two companions, a woman and a young man, trained their guns on Zorvax, ready to fire. Zorvax, in a surprising turn of events, smiled broadly and then let out a deep, hearty laugh.
His laughter echoed through the desolate streets, a stark contrast to the grim situation. The trio of assailants exchanged puzzled looks, their confident stances faltering.
The large man’s face was a mask of confusion and frustration as he glared at Zorvax. "What’s so funny?" he demanded, his voice rough with a mix of anger and doubt. He looked over at his companions, seeking some sort of explanation or support.
The woman, edging closer to him, spoke in a hushed tone, her eyes never leaving Zorvax. "Boss, something’s off. He’s too calm. It’s like he’s not even scared of us," she said, her voice laced with suspicion. Her posture was tense, a clear sign of her growing unease.
The young man, equally puzzled, chimed in, his eyes shifting back and forth between Zorvax and the spot where Ophelia had fallen. "Maybe we’ve underestimated them," he suggested, his hand gripping his gun a bit more tightly. His expression was one of caution, reflecting his second thoughts about their plan.
The large man, however, seemed to dismiss their concerns with a wave of his hand. "What do you know? One’s already down, and we’re level 2 bionic humans. He’s just bluffing," he asserted, trying to sound confident. Despite his words, a hint of uncertainty crept into his voice.
Zorvax, hearing their exchange, seized the opportunity to further unsettle them. "Bluffing, you say?" he said, his smile turning into a smirk. "You might want to rethink that." He took a step forward, his movements deliberate and unafraid.
The woman glanced nervously at the large man, her doubt growing. "Boss, he doesn’t seem like the type to bluff," she whispered, her gaze fixed on Zorvax.
The young man nodded in agreement, his earlier bravado fading. "I’ve got a bad feeling about this," he murmured, his eyes darting around as if expecting an ambush.
Zorvax, capitalizing on their hesitation, continued, "You’ve walked into a trap of your own making. And now, you’re in our world." His voice was calm yet carried an underlying threat, a reminder of the danger they posed.
The big man, his bravado crumbling, retorted loudly, "What do you mean? You’re alone and about to die!" His voice, though loud, betrayed a hint of doubt, an attempt to conceal his growing unease.
"You don’t need to bluff," he added, trying to sound assertive, but his voice faltered, revealing his uncertainty.
Zorvax, unfazed by the threat, smiled wryly. "Bluffing? Hardly necessary. Everything I’ve said is the truth," he responded with a calmness that contrasted sharply with the man’s agitation.
In an instant, the sound of a gunshot shattered the tense silence. The young man among the assailants dropped to the ground, a bullet hole in his head - a precise, lethal shot.
The woman and the large man were visibly shocked, their eyes widening in disbelief. Their gaze darted around, trying to make sense of what just happened. It was then they saw Ophelia, whom they had assumed was out of the fight, now holding a gun and rising to her feet.
Ophelia, with a smooth, assured motion, stood up. "Your shot is too weak," she said, the corners of her mouth turning up in a sly smile. Her confidence was palpable, her posture unyielding and ready for combat.
The big man gaped at her, his face a mask of disbelief and fear. "How... how can you still be alive?" he stammered, his voice laced with fear and confusion.
Ophelia’s smile grew. "I’m not just any zombie. I’m bionic," she explained casually, almost amused by his shock. "My skin’s tougher, and I fortified my head with nanomachines before your shot."
Zorvax and Ophelia now stood confidently before the two remaining humans, who were clearly shaken. The dynamics of the encounter had shifted entirely.
Zorvax stepped forward, his voice cool and mocking. "Seems like you weren’t quite prepared for what we are," he taunted. His eyes locked with the big man’s, a silent challenge in his gaze.
The woman, clutching her weapon, exchanged a fearful glance with her large companion. Her previous confidence had evaporated, leaving her voice trembling. "What do we do now?" she whispered, barely loud enough to be heard.
The big man, visibly shaken, scanned their surroundings, his mind racing for a way out. "We... we need to rethink this," he muttered, his voice a shadow of its former bravado. The cockiness had vanished, replaced by a dawning realization of their perilous situation.
Ophelia, standing tall next to Zorvax, gave a slight nod, her eyes cold and unyielding. "You thought hunting us would be simple," she remarked, her voice dripping with contempt. "Seems like you grossly underestimated us."
The big man and the woman shared a look of desperation, their minds scrambling for a solution. They had not anticipated the resilience and strength of Zorvax and Ophelia.
Suddenly, the big man made a decisive call. "Activate awaken mode!" he barked, his voice urgent.
The woman, caught off guard by the suggestion, hesitated. "Are you sure about this?" she asked, her eyes wide with concern.
"We have no choice now!" the big man shouted, his tone laced with desperation. "I never imagined they’d be this strong. We’re under too much pressure."
With a reluctant nod, the woman complied, and they both activated their awaken mode. Their armor began to glow, emanating a powerful energy.
Zorvax, observing the transformation, commented, "So, you’ve resorted to awaken mode now."
The big man’s eyes widened in surprise, not expecting Zorvax to be familiar with the concept. "You may know about awaken mode, but this time, ours is different," he retorted, trying to regain some semblance of control.
Zorvax’s smile broadened, his curiosity piqued. "Different, you say? I’m eager to see what that entails," he said, his tone playful yet laced with a challenge.
The big man and the woman, now clad in their glowing armor, faced Zorvax and Ophelia anew. The atmosphere was charged with tension, each side assessing the other, ready for the escalated confrontation.
Ophelia, standing confidently beside Zorvax, readied herself, her eyes fixed on their opponents. "Let’s see what they’ve got," she said, her voice calm but ready for whatever came next.
The two duos faced off, the silent city around them a stark backdrop to the imminent clash. The moment was fraught with anticipation, the outcome of this encounter now more uncertain than ever.
