Zombolution: Unleash the Undying Power

Chapter 59: Ophelia’s Playground

Chapter 59: Ophelia’s Playground

The bionic human guards, all of them enhanced to level 2, were efficiently dispatching the wave of level one zombies that surged against their defenses. Despite the zombies’ overwhelming numbers, the guards’ superior strength and advanced weaponry gave them a clear edge.

As they fired round after round into the oncoming horde, one of the guards shouted over the commotion, "Does anyone have any idea why these things are suddenly so aggressive?"

His partner, reloading her weapon, replied without looking up, "No clue, but keep your guard up. There’s more of them than us."

The guards moved with a well-practiced rhythm, their bionic enhancements syncing perfectly with their tactical movements. Their expressions were focused, determined, and their bodies were tensed for combat—a picture of human machinery at its finest.

Then, a different, guttural roar cut through the noise—a level 2 zombie was making its way to the front lines.

"There!" another guard pointed out, his voice tinged with a mix of alarm and anticipation. "Level 2s incoming!"

The guards shifted their formation slightly, readying themselves for a more formidable opponent. The presence of level 2 zombies changed the stakes; these were not the mindless level ones that fell so easily.

One of the guards, a seasoned veteran with scars to prove it, grinned beneath his helmet. "Finally, a real challenge," he said, his excitement clear. "Remember, level 2s have the cores. That’s what we’re after."

The other guards, buoyed by the prospect of a more valuable prize, tightened their grips on their weapons. "Right, those cores could mean a promotion. Let’s bag a few and get out of this mess with a bonus," a younger guard responded, the thrill of the hunt apparent in his eyes.

They formed a tighter circle, backs to each other, creating a defensive perimeter. As the level 2 zombies approached, the guards’ training kicked in. They aimed for the head, knowing that was the only surefire way to put down a zombie for good.

The rhythm of gunfire and shouted commands created a soundtrack of organized chaos. That was, until the unexpected happened.

A sudden, loud pop resounded, and one of the guards at the end of the line dropped to the ground. His body was still, the upper part of his protective headgear shattered, like a melon split open, revealing the grim reality inside.

The other guards froze for a split second, their routine disrupted. "Hey, what just—" one guard began, turning toward the fallen comrade. He stopped mid-sentence, his eyes wide with shock.

Confusion spread through the ranks. "Did... Did that just happen?" another guard whispered, his voice barely carrying over the continued moans of the zombies. The usual confidence that came with their bionic enhancements wavered as they faced this new, unseen threat.

They had been trained to face the undead, to anticipate their predictable, if aggressive, behavior. But this? This was something else—something unexpected. The guards shifted uneasily, their heads swiveling as they tried to comprehend the source of the attack.

"Keep it together!" the squad leader barked, trying to regain some semblance of control. "Eyes open, everyone. That came from somewhere. Find it!"

Their formation tightened, back to back now, their guns raised not just toward the advancing zombies but in all directions, searching for the hidden enemy. The loss of one of their own had shaken them, but their survival instincts were kicking in, overriding the initial shock.

Hidden from the guards’ sight, Ophelia lay prone with her sniper rifle, her enhanced eyes finding target after target through the scope. Each time her finger squeezed the trigger, another guard dropped silently to the ground. A satisfied smirk played on her lips, her position on the high ground giving her a clear advantage.

Next to her, Zorvax crouched, watching the chaos below with a calculating gaze. "You’re making it look easy," he commented, the corner of his mouth lifting in a small, appreciative smile. "A sniper really changes the game in situations like this."

Ophelia’s smirk widened for a moment in response to Zorvax’s praise. "They’re just sitting ducks from up here," she replied, her tone even, betraying none of the adrenaline that might have been coursing through her.

Zorvax’s grin mirrored hers as he glanced at the notifications popping up in his vision, each one confirming the successful takedown of another guard. "It’s almost too easy. A sniper in this situation is a strong play. We’re racking up points without breaking a sweat."

Ophelia nodded, her focus returning to her scope as she lined up her next shot. "They don’t stand a chance," she agreed, her voice as steady as her hands.

Together, they continued their deadly work, Ophelia’s precise shots coupled with Zorvax’s strategic mind, ensuring they remained undetected. The pair were a formidable team, their combined skills allowing them to dominate the battlefield from their concealed perch.

Down below, panic was setting in as the guards realized they were being picked off by an enemy they couldn’t see. "Report! Report!" one guard shouted, his voice breaking as he activated his communicator. "Someone’s taking us out from—"

Before he could finish, another guard’s communication device crackled to life. "This is Beta. Report your status immediately," came the urgent demand.

"It’s the heads... they’re exploding! We don’t see the attacker!" the guard stammered into the device, his eyes wild as he tried to process the situation.

Beta’s response was quick and decisive. "Scan the perimeter! They have to be close by."

The guard swept his gaze around the compound, his pulse racing. That’s when his eyes drifted upward, catching a glimpse of movement atop the dome. "Something’s on the dome’s top," he managed to report, but before he could say more, his world turned black as Ophelia’s next bullet found its mark.

The line went dead, and Beta stood motionless for a split second, the last transmission echoing in his ears. "The dome’s top..." he murmured, realization dawning. He was quick to action, his voice booming through the comm system, "We have intruders on the premises. Sweep the dome’s top immediately!"

Far from the unfolding panic, Zorvax and Ophelia made a discreet exit. As they slipped away, Zorvax couldn’t help but let a satisfied smile spread across his face. "Look at that, Ophelia," he said in a low, pleased tone, "all those zombie points. This little excursion turned out to be quite profitable."

Ophelia, ever the silent accomplice, just gave a slight nod, the corners of her mouth turning up ever so slightly. They had come to this place on a hunch, and it had paid off handsomely.

Zorvax glanced back at the chaos they’d left in their wake. "Definitely worth the trip," he asserted with quiet confidence, already counting the gains in his head.
