Chapter 124: Meeting The Ascendants For The First Time

In the shadow-drenched depths of the dense forest, Blackie and Ophelia moved with a stealthiness that seemed almost otherworldly. Their figures, draped in darkness, were barely distinguishable from the nocturnal hues of the woodland. They crept closer to the unsuspecting group of five Tier 3 Ascendants, their presence as silent as the night itself.

Perched atop a lofty branch, hidden by the thick canopy, Zorvax watched the scene unfold below with an expression etched in ice-cold anticipation. A smirk tugged at the corners of his lips, barely visible in the dim light.

He leaned forward slightly, his eyes glinting with a predatory sharpness. "Let’s see how they handle this," he murmured under his breath, his voice a low, menacing rumble that seemed to blend with the whispers of the forest.

Meanwhile, Ophelia, a figure of deadly grace, moved with such silence that not even the leaves under her feet dared to crunch. She gave Blackie a subtle nod, a signal understood in the depths of their shared darkness.

Their approach was meticulously synchronized, each step calculated to use the forest’s natural cover to their advantage. Ophelia’s eyes shone with a cold, unfeeling focus, her face a mask of predatory determination.

Blackie, now a master of his shadow abilities, was like a wraith in the night. He seemed to merge with the shadows, his movements so silent that it was as if he were a mere figment of imagination, a ghostly presence in the dense woods.

Elsewhere in the forest, the group of Tier 3 Ascendants, led by the determined Lyra, remained blissfully unaware of the impending threat. Their attitudes were a mix of skepticism and overconfidence as they meandered through the woods.

Lucas, his eyebrow arched in doubt, turned to Lyra with a sceptical look. Planting his hands firmly on his hips, he questioned her in a tone dripping with incredulity, "So, where’s this terrifying aura you’ve been going on about? We’ve trekked through this forest for hours and found nothing out of the ordinary."

Nira, leaning nonchalantly against a tree, arms crossed, added with a teasing glint in her eye, "Yeah, Lyra, are you sure you’re not just jumping at shadows? We haven’t come across anything strange yet."

Lyra faced them, undeterred by their mocking tones. Her voice was steady, filled with unwavering certainty. "I’m telling you, what I sensed was here, in this forest. It was a presence unlike any other. Something potent is hiding among these trees."

Steven, who had been casually observing their surroundings, joined the conversation, his voice laced with growing impatience. He leaned back against a tree, arms folded, his usual composed demeanour showing signs of irritation. "Let’s just take a break, regroup, and figure this out. We’ve been on this wild goose chase for too long."

Magnus, flexing his broad shoulders and cracking his knuckles, echoed Steven’s sentiment with a deep, relaxed voice, "A break sounds good. Gives us a moment to look around properly. But I’ve got to agree with Steven – this feels like a wild goose chase."

As they settled down for a brief respite, their body language spoke of a group too assured of their own prowess. Lucas slouched against a tree, an air of boredom etched on his face. Nira, with a casual flick of her wrist, sent her knife spinning through the air, catching it with practised ease.

Her gaze flitted around, only mildly interested in her surroundings. Steven sprawled on the ground, legs stretched out, looking visibly exasperated. Meanwhile, Magnus leaned against a sturdy tree, his eyes wandering, his thoughts seemingly far away.

Only Lyra remained on high alert, her posture rigid, her eyes darting through the trees. She stood as a stark contrast to her relaxed companions, embodying vigilance and readiness. Her face was set in a focused expression, a clear testament to her belief that something unseen and powerful lurked within the forest.

The relaxed chatter of her team was abruptly silenced by a woman’s voice cutting through the quiet of the forest. "What are you doing here?" The voice, unexpected and clear, sent a ripple of surprise through the group.

Instantly, the Ascendants were on their feet, their previous nonchalance replaced by alert readiness. Steven, with a furrow of his brows and a protective stance, called out boldly, "Who are you? Show yourselves!"

Emerging slowly from the shadows, a figure with grey skin and black hair appeared. It was Ophelia, her presence almost ghostlike. The Ascendants stared a mix of surprise and curiosity on their faces, taken aback by her unusual appearance.

"What are you doing here?" Ophelia’s voice was calm, her eyes scanning the group with a piercing gaze.

Lucas, regaining his composure, replied with an air of arrogance, "We’re here on a mission to inspect something." His tone carried a hint of challenge as he added, "And what about you? What are you doing here? Be aware, interfering with the work of Tier 3 Ascendants could land you in trouble."

The term ’Ascendant’ seemed to catch Ophelia off guard, a flicker of confusion crossing her otherwise impassive face. "What is an Ascendant?" she asked, her tone laced with genuine curiosity.

Lucas and Nira exchanged a look of disbelief, their eyes widening in surprise. It was almost beyond their comprehension that someone could be unaware of the existence of Ascendants. Nira parted her lips, about to express her astonishment, but Lyra quickly stepped in before she could voice her thoughts.

"Hold on," Lyra said, raising her hand slightly to draw their attention. Her voice was calm, yet carried an authoritative edge as she addressed her team and Ophelia. "Consider this – she might have been living in this forest, isolated from our society. It’s entirely possible she’s unaware of Ascendants."

The group fell silent, pondering Lyra’s suggestion. Ophelia stood still, her grey skin and black hair making her look almost ethereal in the forest’s dappled light. Unbeknownst to the Ascendants, Ophelia’s ignorance stemmed from her recent revival by Zorvax, a fact that had kept her disconnected from the current world.

Lyra, sensing the need to clarify, turned towards Ophelia. "Ascendants," she began, her tone patient yet cautious, "are a new evolution of humans. Each of us possesses unique abilities, setting us apart from ordinary humans."

Ophelia’s eyes narrowed slightly as she processed this information. "Superhumans," she whispered, the word barely escaping her lips as a new understanding began to form.

"Yes, in a manner of speaking," Lyra nodded, her expression serious but open.

Ophelia’s gaze shifted slightly, looking past the group as if seeing something far away. "So, this is why their race was unknown in Zorvax’s system. They are not humans anymore, but Ascendants," she mused internally, piecing together the puzzle.

A palpable tension hung in the air, like a delicate veil that could be torn apart at any moment. The Ascendants, still grappling with the revelation of Ophelia’s ignorance, eased their rigid stances. A flicker of curiosity began to replace their initial skepticism.
