Zombolution: Unleash the Undying Power

Chapter 105: Hunting Grey Wolves

Chapter 105: Hunting Grey Wolves

In a forest not far from the city, a group of Ascendants moved with purpose, their eyes fixed on their quarry. The dense canopy above barely filtered the sunlight, casting a dappled pattern on the ground. The air was thick with the scent of earth and the distant, musky odor of their prey.

They were on the hunt for grey wolves, formidable creatures classified as Tier 2 beasts. These wolves were not the simple animals of old; they were bigger, faster, and far more cunning, their eyes glowing with an eerie intelligence. The cores of these beasts were valuable, known to contain concentrated mana, making them a prized catch.

Leading the group of Tier 2 Ascendants was a Tier 3 Ascendant, a woman named Lyra. She was a figure of authority, her stance confident and her gaze sharp. Her dark hair was pulled back in a practical braid, and her cloak fluttered slightly in the breeze.

"Keep your senses sharp," Lyra instructed her team, her voice a calm but firm command. "These wolves are clever. They know we’re here."

Beside her, a young Ascendant named Jax nodded, his youthful face set in a determined frown. "We won’t let them get away, Lyra. We’ve trained for this," he said, gripping his mana-infused spear tightly.

Lyra glanced at him, her expression softening momentarily. "Good. But remember, Jax, it’s not just about strength. You need to think like the wolf."

The group advanced quietly, their feet barely making a sound on the forest floor. They communicated through hand signals, a silent language honed through countless hunts.

Suddenly, a rustle in the underbrush caught their attention. A pair of glowing eyes appeared in the shadows, followed by another set, and then another. The grey wolves had been waiting, their coats blending seamlessly with the forest.

"Now!" Lyra shouted, breaking the silence. The Ascendants sprang into action, encircling the wolves with practiced efficiency.

The wolves snarled, their teeth bared in a menacing display. But there was a calculated intelligence in their movements, a sign of their evolved nature.

Jax lunged forward, his spear aimed at the nearest wolf. The creature dodged with surprising agility, its movements almost a blur. Jax stumbled but quickly regained his footing, his eyes burning with the thrill of the hunt.

"Don’t get reckless," Lyra called out, her own weapon a shimmering blade of light. She moved with graceful precision, her attacks a dance of deadly intent.

One of the wolves, larger than the rest, lunged at Lyra. She sidestepped smoothly, her blade finding its mark along the wolf’s flank. The creature yelped but didn’t falter, its eyes fixed on her with a mix of pain and defiance.

"Watch the alpha," Lyra yelled, nodding towards the larger wolf. "It’s leading them!"

Jax and the others adjusted their positions, focusing on the alpha. The rest of the wolves seemed to take their cue from the leader, their attacks becoming more coordinated.

The battle was a whirl of movement and energy, the Ascendants and wolves locked in a dance of predator and prey. Mana sparked in the air, released with every strike and parry.

As the fight intensified, Jax found himself face to face with the alpha. The wolf’s eyes bore into him, a deep intelligence shining behind the feral glare.

"You’re strong," Jax muttered to the wolf, almost in admiration. "But we need your core."

With a sudden burst of speed, Jax thrust his spear forward. The wolf dodged, but not quickly enough. The spear grazed its side, a spurt of energy signaling a hit.

The alpha wolf staggered, then let out a howl that seemed to echo through the forest. The other wolves hesitated, their attention shifting to their wounded leader.

"Now’s our chance!" Lyra shouted. "Subdue them!"

The Ascendants moved in, using their enhanced abilities to overpower the wolves. The animals fought fiercely but were gradually worn down by the relentless assault.

Finally, the wolves lay subdued, their chests heaving with exhaustion. The alpha, injured but still dignified, locked eyes with Lyra.

"You fought well," she said to the wolf, a hint of respect in her tone. "Your cores will help our people."

As the group of Ascendants gathered the cores from the subdued grey wolves, a sense of pride and achievement permeated the air. Their successful hunt was a testament to their skills and strength, a confirmation of their abilities in this new world where the lines between predator and prey were often blurred.

The quiet of the forest, usually a peaceful respite, was suddenly pierced by a sharp sense of danger. The atmosphere shifted, and an uneasy feeling settled over the group.

"What’s happening?" one of the Tier 2 Ascendants, a young man named Dax, asked, his voice tinged with uncertainty. His eyes darted around, trying to pinpoint the source of their unease.

Lyra, her senses as sharp as ever, felt the danger too. It was an oppressive, heavy aura that seemed to weigh down on them. "I’m not sure," she responded, her brows furrowed in concentration. Her hand instinctively went to the hilt of her weapon, ready for whatever might come.

The other Ascendants looked at Lyra, waiting for her guidance. "What should we do, Lyra?" another member of the group, Elara, asked. Her voice was steady, but her eyes betrayed her concern.

Lyra scanned their surroundings, her mind racing. The aura was too strong, too overwhelming. It was unlike anything she had encountered before. "We need to leave. Now," she decided quickly. Her tone left no room for argument, a clear command that echoed her rising sense of urgency.

Without hesitation, the group sprang into action, their earlier triumph forgotten in the face of this unknown threat. They moved swiftly, their feet barely touching the ground as they raced through the forest.

The journey back was tense, each member of the group on high alert, their senses stretched to the limit. Despite their haste, Lyra kept a careful eye on her team, ensuring no one was left behind.

After what felt like an eternity, they managed to put a significant distance between themselves and the source of the danger. Only when they were far enough did they dare to slow down, their chests heaving with the effort of their escape.

Panting, Dax leaned against a tree, his face flushed from the exertion. "What was that?" he gasped out, his eyes still scanning the forest warily.

"I don’t know," Lyra admitted, her expression serious. "But whatever it was, it’s not something we can handle right now."

There was a collective murmur of agreement among the group. They all had felt the overwhelming power of the unseen threat, a force that was beyond their current capabilities.

"We were lucky it didn’t pursue us," Elara noted, her voice laced with relief but also a hint of curiosity. "But why? What made it stay back?"

Lyra shook her head, her gaze distant. "I’m not sure. But we can’t let our guard down. This forest... it’s changing. There are new dangers we don’t fully understand yet."

The group nodded, the weight of Lyra’s words settling over them. They knew that their world was constantly evolving, presenting new challenges and mysteries.

"We need to report this to the higher-ups," Lyra stated firmly, already thinking ahead. "They need to know what’s out there. It could be a threat to the city."

The group gathered themselves, their sense of accomplishment from the hunt now overshadowed by the encounter with the unknown danger. As they made their way back to the city, their minds were filled with questions and concerns about what they had just experienced.
