Just My Luck to Run Into Trouble the Moment I Step Outside

Thud, thud, thud...

The dull sounds of impact echoed through Chu Tianxing's living room, accompanied by muffled grunts of pain.

After what felt like forever, the sounds finally stopped.

"Not bad. That was a fun sparring," Chu Tianxing said as he grabbed a towel and handed it to Qin Ling. "Here, wipe off that sweat."

Qin Ling took the towel and dabbed at the beads of sweat on her forehead. Then she collapsed onto the sofa, propping her long, pale legs up on the coffee table. She leaned forward to massage the dark bruises scattered across her feet and shins, complaining as she did, "How the hell are your legs so damn hard? Your internal energy isn't even as strong as mine..."

Chu Tianxing chuckled. "Well, I did take that Creation Pill, so I've been completely reborn. I wouldn't say I have bones of steel, but they're definitely way tougher than your average person's."

Of course, that wasn't the whole truth. He'd actually taken two of those cheat-level Lesser Marrow Cleansing Pills, popped a bunch of Body-Strengthening Pills, practiced the Muscle-Transforming & Bone-Tempering Chapter, learned some crazy defensive skills from the Iron and Copper Corpses, and even mastered Peach Blossom Island's advanced Whirlwind Leaves Sweeping Leg. That's why his legs were so ridiculously hard.

Still, Qin Ling definitely had more internal energy than he did. Her cultivation art might not be as refined as his Xiantian Art, but she had way more raw power built up over the years.

So even though Qin Ling's legs were covered in bruises from their clash, Chu Tianxing's legs hidden under his pants weren't looking much better. The difference was that he was wearing long pants, so she couldn't see his condition. Plus, he had a high pain tolerance, so he could act like nothing happened.

The thing about Chu Tianxing was his Intuition. He could instantly tell if an opponent's internal energy was stronger than his. So in actual fights, he rarely went toe-to-toe with anyone. During today's nine tournament matches, whenever he faced someone with superior inner force, he relied on his intuitive predictions, explosive bursts of speed from his A Thousand Li in an Instant lightness skill, and fancy dodging with his Snake-Crawl Raccoon-Tumble movement technique to slip past their attacks and strike their weak points.

Throughout all nine matches, he barely had a single direct clash with any opponent. His weakness in terms of internal energy depth never got exposed.

If it hadn't been for wanting to help Qin Ling improve her leg techniques through sparring, Chu Tianxing wouldn't have needed to clash directly with her at all. With just prediction and evasion, he could have easily beaten her.

Going head-to-head would only make him suffer from not having enough internal energy reserves.

Luckily, what he lacked in raw power, he made up for in quality. And thanks to all his lucky encounters, his bones and muscles were way tougher than normal people's. That's how he managed to hold his own against Qin Ling while keeping up his face despite the pain.

After rubbing her legs for a while, Qin Ling noticed how Chu Tianxing was just standing there looking completely fine, which really pissed her off internally.

I thought his whole ‘leg technique practice’ line was just an excuse, and what he really wanted to practice were those... intimate leg techniques. I spent so much time thinking about it and had this whole internal struggle before working up the courage to stay. But this dolt actually went and had a real sparring match with me... and kicked the crap out of me too...

Gritting her teeth, she shot him an annoyed glare and stretched her legs toward him. "What are you just standing there staring at? Get over here and help me massage these! This is all your fault!"

Chu Tianxing looked surprised. "Getting a little bruised during sparring is totally normal, isn't it? How's that my fault? Besides, that whole session was good for improving your leg work, you know?"

“Less talking,” she said, glaring. “You helping or not?”

"Fine, fine. There's no point arguing with a woman," Chu Tianxing shrugged and crouched down. He gently held her delicate foot with his left hand and placed his right palm on the smooth skin of her foot to channel his Xiantian Art internal energy. He then used the therapeutic techniques from the Nine Yin Manual's healing chapter to massage her foot and help blood circulation, dissolving the bruises.

Qin Ling relaxed completely into the sofa, half-closing her eyes as she watched Chu Tianxing work. She felt a warm glow spread from his hand, followed by a soothing coolness. It felt amazing.

The dark purple bruises were visibly fading away at a rate she could actually see.

Seeing this, Qin Ling couldn't help but marvel, "Your massage technique is amazing! You healed me in like, two seconds!”

"Eh, it's nothing special," Chu Tianxing said modestly, then asked, “You wanna learn? I can teach you, then you could do it yourself next time..."

"..."

Qin Ling was speechless. I’m literally serving up my beautiful legs on a silver platter for you and you don’t even get it…

This guy is hopeless.

It only took him about ten minutes to get rid of all the bruises on her calves and feet.

"All done. Treatment is complete," Chu Tianxing stood up and said to Qin Ling, who was still melted on the sofa. "Get up and take a few steps, see if it still hurts."

Qin Ling didn't budge, keeping her eyes half-closed as she said in a lazy purr, “Nope. I don’t wanna. Let me just lie here a bit longer."

Chu Tianxing reminded her, "It's almost ten at night. If you don't go home soon, your grandma will worry."

Only then did Qin Ling reluctantly sit up from the sofa, grumbling under her breath, "Grandma knows I'm at your place. Even if I stayed here all night, she wouldn't worry..."

Chu Tianxing shook his head. “Don’t be silly. Of course, she’d worry. Come on, it’s late. I’ll walk you home today."

Qin Ling looked surprised. “Whoa, feeling chivalrous tonight, are we?”

He was already at the door, putting on the new shoes she’d bought him without even looking at her, “I told you, it’s late. If it were nine o’clock, you’d be on your own.”

She snorted. “Wow. Heartless.”

After putting on their shoes, they left the apartment together. They walked out of the residential complex and strolled side by side along the well-lit sidewalk. After walking quietly for a while, Qin Ling suddenly asked, "Tianxing, what do you want to do with your future?"

Chu Tianxing answered without hesitation, "Reach the pinnacle of martial arts, of course. I want to see what kind of scenery those Astral Qi Realm living gods see."

“No, I mean a job! What’s your career plan, besides all the fighting?”

"Hmm, career-wise, I've been writing a novel recently. Maybe I'll become a professional writer?"

"Oh? You're not writing poetry anymore and switched to novels?"

"These days, if you're good at writing poetry, you'll beg for food until you're old. Even if a novel completely flops, you can at least scrape some basic income and attendance bonuses..."

"Ha! Actually, if you can get good results in this Martial Arts Tournament, not only will first-tier universities in the capital admit you with special consideration, but you'll also get the whole package of scholarships, government stipends, and martial arts association allowances. Elite organizations like the Embroidered Uniform Guards and Eastern Depot will be fighting over you. You won't have to worry about your future at all..."

“Good point. Those who succeed in martial arts never have to worry about the future. If anything, having too many options might make you indecisive. What about you, Ling'er? Any career plans for your future?"

"I haven't thought about it too much. But Eastern Depot is my first choice. Not just because my senior brother works there and I kind of have connections, but also because now that I know about the Gate of Revelation and other worlds, if I join Eastern Depot, maybe I'll get chances to see the scenery of different worlds someday."

“You’re amazing, Ling’er. You’ll definitely make it.”

They kept chatting, and before long, they were almost at her building.

Just then, a low, magnetic male voice drifted out from a dark alley where the streetlights couldn't reach. “Beautiful lady, would you care to join me for a wonderful evening?”

Chu Tianxing frowned and looked toward the voice. A face emerged from the shadows. It was unnaturally pale, like someone who never saw the sun, but also handsome to a creepy, almost inhuman degree. A pair of black eyes shone with a weird light as they locked onto Qin Ling.

"I knew it..." Chu Tianxing sighed and muttered to himself, “This is what I get for being a protagonist with cheat codes. I can’t even walk down the street without a random encounter popping up…”

“But seriously, isn’t the Great Ming supposed to have the best public safety in the world? How is it that I've run into 'evil creatures' twice in just twenty-something days? What am I? A magnet for trouble?”
