Shattered Spirit
At the hospital, James pleaded with the officers to allow him to see how his baby was doing. Seeing the honest look in his eyes, they agreed, but one officer went with him. James went to the unit where Lily was kept under close monitoring but she was not there. He started panicking as he scanned the whole room frantically.
"No, she was here last night. Let me ask the doctor. Maybe they moved her to the nursery," James said and the officer stared at him wondering if this was just a trick to get away, but before he could say anything to James who looked very worried a doctor walked to the scene.
"Doctor, how is Lily?" James asked looking very anxious, and the officer stood there looking on.
"Mr Haward, I am sorry. It appeared the baby was given an overdose. We did our best, but we lost her," he announced and James dropped to the floor on his knees.
The room suddenly felt heavy for him and his heart broke into many pieces. The first day he set his eyes on the child who looked so much like him, something moved inside of him. The baby smiled at him and it warmed his heart. He closed his eyes and the Lily's little face appeared before him with her cute smile. James put his hand to the floor trembling.
"Mr Haward," the doctor immediately became concerned seeing James's state right now.
"I want to see her body," James said almost in a whisper and the doctor nodded.
"Come with me," the doctor said and James stood up.
"I am sorry, Mr Haward, but you are coming with me," the officer said stopping James from leaving the place as he still felt it was a trick to run away.
"I beg you, please let me see my daughter and I promise you I will go with you wherever you want to take me. You can handcuff me to yourself if you don't believe me," James pleaded sounding very broken.
The officer read the honesty in his eyes. He was on the verge of tears. He was holding back a strong pain and it was so evident around him.
"Okay," the officer said. "Let's go see your daughter," he added still feeling James was just acting.
"Thank you," James said and followed the doctor hoping the child was still alive and this was all a mistake.
The doctor took James to the morgue where the baby had been kept. Tears fell from James's eyes when he saw little Lily, lying there looking completely white like a sheet on a table with her eyes closed. The officer felt sorry for James realizing he was not lying.
"Mr Haward, what would you like to do with her body?" the doctor asked.
"Please, check her one more time. She may be alive?" James said hopefully with tears in his eyes threatening to fall.
"I am sorry Mr Haward. She is gone," the doctor said.
"Please check. I beg you. Miracles happen," James pleaded and the doctor sighed.
"Mr Haward, there is no need for checking. She is gone," the doctor began but James frowned, and a tear streamed down his face.
"I said check the baby again," James yelled with more tears in his eyes, but also looking like a beast.
"Sure," the doctor said and checked the baby again but there was nothing.
"Mr Haward, I am sorry, there is nothing," the doctor reported and gulped. "So, what would you like to do with her body?" the doctor asked again staring at James.
James walked to the table and carried little Lily in his arms. She was so cold like ice. He planted a kiss on her forehead.
"This is all my fault. I should have protected you instead of going for revenge. I am so sorry. Please forgive me," James said in tears and kissed the baby again. He handed the body to the doctor.
"Cremate her and give her to me," James said looking blank as his tears flowed down his face.
He stood there and watched the door call in some people to take care of that. He wiped the tears from his face, but they won't stop flowing down his face. The officer's phone rang and he answered it as the doctor handed the baby over to the one who would do the cremation.
"Are you bringing him in?" came the general's voice.
"Sir, we have a bit of a situation. It appears Mr Haward has a couple of months old baby he just lost. He is shattered. We will bring him in soon," the officer reported.
"Well, sorry to hear that, but it doesn't change the fact that he committed a crime and killed someone," the General replied.
"I understand. We will bring him in soon," replied the officer.
The baby was cremated and given to James. He walked out of the hospital carrying the urns. There was no handcuff on him as they walked towards the parked police car. James sat in the car and they left for the police station.
At the hideout, Black got to know what had happened at the hospital. He tried multiple times to reach James when the helicopter arrived but to no avail. He left the place with the helicopter leaving Fiona sleeping in the room.
At the police station, the police car drove in and James was led to the station. The general was informed and he stepped out to see James hearing what the officer had said on the call. Jason, Mirenda and Henry followed him out.
Jason was the first to see James and he noticed he was different. He was carrying an urn in his arms as he walked towards the police station flanked by the officers who had come to arrest him. Jason walked up to him as soon as he was inside the station. Mirenda and Henry joined him.
"James," Jason called out to him and James turned to look at Jason in complete silence.
"Where is Fiona?" Jason asked.
"At the hideout. She killed our baby," James said almost in a whisper.
"How?" the General asked drawing James attention to him.
"She gave her sleeping pills, an overdosed," James replied and shifted his gaze back to the urn he was holding. "She was so beautiful. Now, this is all I have of her," he added.
"What is wrong with him?" Mirenda asked finding James's behaviour odd.
"He is traumatized," Henry replied studying James carefully. "He is still dealing with the pain of this great loss," he added.
"He truly loved the baby," Jason said.
Jane, Maria and Maltilda were brought in a few minutes after James was sent away.
"I didn't break out of prison and I have not done anything. So why am I here," Matilda yelled as soon as she came face to face with the General.
"Don't worry, in a couple of minutes, you will know why you are also here. Take them away," the General said.
Mr Wellington walked in with Dr Andesh and Jason's eyes widened.
"Dad?" Jason called out, and Mr Wellington smiled.
"You are not surprised to see me alive?" Dr Andesh asked surprised Jason didn't react to her presence.
"No, I saw the tip of the bulletproof you were wearing," Jason replied to Dr Andesh and walked towards Mr Wellington. "I am glad to see you, but how did you get these two?" he asked.
"Before you start the Q and A, I will be happy if you act a little surprised to see me for a change," Dr Andesh whined.
"Okay, I am very surprised to see you," Jason said with a straight face making Mirenda giggle.
"I will accept that," Dr Andesh said and Jason shifted his gaze to his father who was smiling.
"Well, Dr Andesh found out what Jane was planning the day we took her to the hospital. We just played along so we will catch her," Mr Wellington explained. "Son, we will have to run a DNA," he added.
"I understand," Jason acknowledged already figuring Jane might not be his mother if she had attempted to throw him under the bus twice.
Some office had left to pick up Fiona from the dress James gave them before he was taken away.
At the hideout, Fiona had just woken up. She was wondering why James was still not back. She searched for her phone and tried to call him but it went straight to voicemail. She stepped out of the room and realized the place was very quiet.
"Black," Fiona called out but was met with silence.
There was a knock on the door which drew her attention in that direction. She walked to the door sluggishly and answered. She moved back seeing the officers.
"Ms Fiona, we are from the central police station. We are here to take you to safety," the officer said.
"I didn't do anything," Fiona said already trembling.
"You are not in trouble. Just come with us," the officer said but Fiona appeared to be scared.
"I want James," Fiona said and the officer frowned.
"Mr Haward is at the police station. Come with us if you want to see him," the officer said and Fiona nodded.
They led her to the car and put her inside. The car moved towards the station.
"I forgot my baby?" Fiona said.
"What baby?" the officer asked.
"My baby. She cries a lot and she is very noisy so I gave her some sleeping pills. I left her the in the room," she said and the officer's frown deepened.
"Oh, don't worry. I remember now, her father took her to the hospital because she was sleeping too much," Fiona said and the officer immediately noticed there was something wrong with her judging from her behaviour.
