Mirenda’s Suspicion
At the hospital, Fiona didn't want anyone to suspect anything so she requested to be discharged. Her health was okay. The doctor only wanted to keep her there to ensure everything was fine as she went through nine full months of pregnancy without medical attention. Again, her pregnancy was a hidden one. The paperwork was done and Fiona was discharged early hours of the morning. Vera dropped her off at Southwest Ranches City.
“Vera, I appreciate what you are doing for me. I will figure things out and I will come for her," Fiona said leaning on the window of the closed car door while Vera remained behind the wheel.
“What are you going to name her?" Vera asked looking at the baby sleeping peacefully in a small nest strapped to the back seat of the car.
“Lily," Fiona replied after a careful thought.
“You are naming her after your late mother. Nice one," Vera commented. "Wait, how am I supposed to feed her? I have nothing here," she said pointing to her chest with her chin as she moved her head from side to side.
“I extracted some milk for her. Everything is in the bag you brought to me this morning and please buy some formula on the way," Fiona replied.
“Would you come to see her tonight?" Vera asked staring at Fiona.
“Yes, I will come around. I just need time to figure things out," Fiona replied
“Okay," Vera acknowledged and turned the car's engine back on.
Fiona took a step away from the car and watched Vera drive out of the compound with the baby. She walked towards the apartment with her head lowered oblivious about the four-wheel parked under one of the car shades to the corner of the compound. She used the elevator to the sixth floor. She was still in shock at how she was pregnant all this while and she never knew. If she had discovered it earlier, she would have terminated the pregnancy. That baby will never see the light of day. Fiona dragged herself towards the bedroom lost in thought so much so that she didn't notice Mirenda sitting in the living room.
“Fiona?" Mirenda screamed her name causing Fiona to jump.
“Mirenda, when did you get here?" Fiona asked scanning the entire room wondering when and how she had come in while looking nervous.
“Fiona, are you alright?" Mirenda asked noticing her nervousness while holding her cup of coffee in hand.
“Me, pssh. I am fine," Fiona replied nervously wondering how long Mirenda had been in the apartment and if she heard or saw anything.“When did you get here?" she asked descending the staircase back into the living room.
“An hour ago," Mirenda replied and sat down on the sofa and Fiona joined her sitting on the adjacent seat as her reply made her more nervous inducing dizziness.
“I only came here to check up on you. You didn't look good when we left Jason's place," Mirenda pointed out. "If I didn't know better, I would have said you looked like someone going into labour yesterday," she added and Fiona choked on her saliva.
She started coughing and Mirenda quickly went to the kitchen and returned with a glass of water.
“Sorry, what happened?" Mirenda apologized.
“It is my time of the month and that is what happened within the first couple of hours," Fiona replied hoping Mirenda would just accept her explanation and leave her apartment before she noticed something else about her.
She recalled that Mirenda was there when Julia went into labour and it was even Mirenda who noticed Julia was in labour. The thought of Mirenda finding her out sent chills down Fiona's spine.
“So where did you go? I was here for an hour and yet no sign of you," Mirenda asked and Fiona exhaled.
She wished she could yell at Mirenda to get out and stop asking her questions this early morning but she knew such an answer would only raise unnecessary suspicion.
“I went for a jog," Fiona replied forgetting she was wearing a straight loose dress and slippers.
“Okay, I just came to check up on you and get some documents from Jason's old office. I will be on my way back home to prepare for work," Mirenda said and emptied her cup of coffee.
She had already figured Fiona was lying to her but why was what she couldn't figure out.
“I would take care of that," Fiona offered taking the empty cup from her hand.
She wanted Mirenda to leave the apartment that fast. She walked Mirenda to the door holding the empty cup with a broad smile plastered on her face.
“Okay, I will see you tomorrow at the office then," Mirenda said and walked out the front door.
“Sure," Fiona replied and closed the door faster than she had intended to.
She turned around and rested her back on the closed door briefing out a sigh of relief and also hoping Mirenda didn't notice how fast she closed the door.
Outside inside the elevator, Mirenda wondered why Fiona was lying to her. She wondered where she went and what exactly was wrong with her. She exited the elevator and walked towards her parked car. The driver started the engine as soon as he spotted Mirenda and drove out of the compound once Mirenda was seated.
“Did you see when Fiona came in?" Mirenda asked the driver.
Vera drove in and stopped right in front of the gate. So the driver could see them from where he was parked under the shard in the corner but they couldn't. Fiona could have seen the car when she walked towards the elevator but she was so lost in thought she didn't even notice it.
“Yeah, a lady dropped her off in a Ford," the driver replied.
“Ford? That has to be Vera," Mirenda thought. "So why will she lie to me?" she thought as they drove back to Aventura.
Inside Fiona wondered if Mirenda had come in a requested ride. She searched her mind for anything that would have alerted her Mirenda was around but got nothing. She went upstairs to the bedroom and freshened up. She lay on the bed and sleep quickly took over her as she was exhausted and the baby didn't allow her to sleep all through the night.
As soon as sleep took over Fiona she had a dream. In Fiona's dream, she was carrying her child in her arms and James walked in with some supplies. They were living in a big apartment. James walked up to her and greeted her with a kiss and kissed the child too.
“How was your day?" Fiona asked.
“It was good. I just missed you two as soon as I left home. I couldn't wait to get back home to you two," James replied.
“I am glad you have accepted us and want to be a good father. I truly love you and I am willing to give us a chance," Fiona said and James walked up to her.
He sat down on the bed next to her and kissed her.
“I know I lived life a little reckless but this child here," James said shifting his gaze to the baby sleeping in Fiona's arms. "Gave me a change of heart. I also loved you but I allow my womanizing side of me to take over me. I am glad you forgave me and I understand everything you did. I will not hold it against you," he added and kissed Fiona.
At Henry's, Mirenda was back home. She turned on her laptop and started preparing for work. Julia was on a three months leave and she knew she needed to manage everything in her absence. Fiona looked sick and she was wondering if she will be able to work a full day.
“Hi love," came Henry's voice from behind Mirenda.
“Hi babe," Mirenda replied and Henry rewarded her with a kiss. “You are back?" she added.
“Yeah, I didn't have a lot of cases booked today," Henry said and took off his shirt walking towards the closet.
“So what time will you be leaving home tomorrow?" Mirenda asked turning in her seat to face Henry who was standing in the middle of the bedroom shirtless with his well-formed chest on display.
“7 am," He replied and grabbed his robe.
“Hmmm, I thought you would be leaving earlier, I would love to go with you," Mirenda said. "So you pick me up after work," she said pouting her lips.
“Sorry about that, love" Henry apologised finding her expression adorable.
Mirenda turned her attention back to her open the laptop to continue with what she was doing but turned to look at Henry again when she remembered something.
“I went to see Fiona today. She was acting suspiciously," Mirenda said causing Henry to also look in her direction with a frown.
“What happened?" Henry enquired.
“I was there for two hours and she was not there. Well, I told her I had only been there for an hour. I saw what looked like a blood stain on the floor leading to her room. She also panicked when she saw me and was nervous throughout our conversation. She didn't say it but I felt like she wanted me to leave," Mirenda narrated.
“Hmm," Henry said and sat down on the bed. "Fiona doesn't have anything against Jason or Julia. She could be going through some issues. Just give her space and let's see," he added.
“She lied to me. I asked her where she had been and she told me she went jogging. Aside from the fact that she was wearing a loose straight dress when she walked in, I found out from my driver, that she was dropped off this morning by Vera," Mirenda informed Henry and he smiled.
“Mirenda, I know you are looking out for Jason and Julia but just give Fiona some space. Just study her for now and don't create any negative thoughts about her in your mind. You will be judging her before you even get to know what her problem is," Henry advised. "And the negative perception you form about her will make you ready unnecessary meaning into innocent actions of hers. If you want to know if truly something is up just give her space and watch her closely with no formed mind," he added.
“If you say so," Mirenda accepted and Henry stood up heading for the bathroom.
“Going to take a shower," Mirenda asked with a smile.
“Yes," Henry replied with a smile and Mirend stood up from behind the desk.
“Can I join you?" She asked lowering her lashes shyly and tagging at the hem of her dress playfully.
“Sure," Henry replied and the two went to the bathroom together.
