Chapter 271: Tang Yanqi’s Family Background (Part 1)

Tang Yanqi was slowly eating her breakfast. After drinking the last sip of porridge, her phone suddenly rang. It was a string of unfamiliar numbers, unknown to Tang Yanqi, but she answered anyway, "Hello?"

"Miss Tang, I’m Jianan’s mother."

On the other end, a dignified female voice sounded. Tang Yanqi was somewhat surprised. She hadn’t expected it to be Mrs. Sheng. Moreover, the words didn’t sound like something from a mother-in-law to a daughter-in-law, more like from a mother to her son’s current girlfriend.

Mrs. Sheng’s lack of fondness for Tang Yanqi was something she knew well, and visiting her certainly wouldn’t be for anything good. Tang Yanqi glanced at Mrs. Zhang who was still busy in the kitchen.

She got up and walked outside before speaking, "Hello."

She didn’t address her because she didn’t know how to. In theory, she should call her "Mom" like Sheng Jianan, but obviously, Mrs. Sheng wouldn’t like that. Calling her "Aunt" would surely be nitpicked too, so she didn’t call her anything at all.

"Does Miss Tang have time today? I think we need to meet."

Mrs. Sheng’s words were very courteous, but there wasn’t a hint of politeness in her tone. Without waiting for Tang Yanqi to agree, she continued, "At eleven, I’ve reserved a place at ’Yage.’ I only want to meet with Miss Tang alone, and I hope you understand what I mean."

Leaving the villa, Tang Yanqi sat in the back seat of the car, recalling the call she received twenty minutes ago. She clearly understood Mrs. Sheng’s intention, to meet her alone was to ensure no one else knew. Sheng Jianan wasn’t in the country, which Mrs. Sheng must know, so by "others" she naturally meant the likes of Xiao Li and Mrs. Zhang.

Tang Yanqi asked Xiao Li to drop her off at a mall, entered through one door, and exited through another. After making sure Xiao Li wasn’t following her, she headed to the place Mrs. Sheng mentioned.

It was a very uniquely decorated Japanese restaurant. Led by the waiter, Tang Yanqi arrived at the small private room booked by Mrs. Sheng. She got there a bit early, and Mrs. Sheng hadn’t arrived yet. Tang Yanqi sat quietly, having a general idea of what Mrs. Sheng would say to her.

Although she had made things clear to Mrs. Sheng previously, she sought her out again, probably because she still had her concerns.

Close to eleven, Mrs. Sheng, dressed in Chanel’s latest collection and carrying a Dior Lady bag, entered gracefully displaying nobility.

This version of Mrs. Sheng was actually rare. Within the Sheng family, with Mr. Sheng above and Sheng Jianan below, Mrs. Sheng seemed more like a wealthy yet gentle lady of a grand family. It was only in front of Tang Yanqi that she appeared so domineering and dismissive.

Mrs. Sheng elegantly placed her bag down and sat across from Tang Yanqi, "You arrived really early. Have you ordered?"

"Not yet."

Calling the waiter to order, Mrs. Sheng took a sip of the barley tea in front of her, instantly frowning, and called the waiter who just left back, "What kind of tea is this? Is this even for people to drink? Go, change it, bring the best you have here."

These words, at first glance, seemed fine, nothing more than a rich lady being a bit picky. However, Tang Yanqi clearly heard the undertone. It wasn’t tea for people, yet she had already drunk more than half a cup.

Tang Yanqi lowered her eyes, calm and composed. She heard this kind of subtle sarcasm too much and found it childish, paying it no mind at all.
