Chapter 17 : Xiao Yuan
Chapter 17 : Xiao Yuan
17: Xiao Yuan
As the conflict, which could have easily led to injury, ended, Yuyin finally felt her body begin to tremble. During the crisis, her body had entered a sort of optimal state; she supposed this was an instinct for survival.
Yuyin stepped over Zhang Biaoyang, picked up her tennis racket, and didn't even glance at Chen Yan as she walked straight past her. The surrounding girls unconsciously made way, and even Chen Yan didn't dare to make a sound.
More than a dozen tall, fierce boys were still gathered outside the court, all of them Zhang Biaoyang's buddies. While perhaps not on Zhang Biaoyang's level, they were all skilled fighters and athletes at school, and a few of them had fairly high Primordial Energy values. If they ganged up on Yuyin, who only knew one leg technique, she might not have the advantage. If they all grabbed weapons, Yuyin would be in real danger. She was holding the tennis racket, which could serve as a last-resort weapon, since she only knew leg techniques, not boxing.
However, the boys didn't block Yuyin. They simply let her walk off the court, passing under their watchful eyes, carrying a faint, intoxicating scent after her intense exertion.
Zhang Biaoyang had gone mad; they had not.
In broad daylight, for a group of second and third-year boys to gang up and brutally beat the school belle, the Student Council President?
Although Yuyin's family had fallen on hard times, given her image at school and her status in the minds of teachers and students, doing such a thing would surely provoke widespread indignation. Chen Yan's matter could be explained away as a dispute between girls, but how would they explain a group of older boys ganging up on a senior student? Was that something they could do?
It wasn't that they weren't loyal; for a brother, they could risk their lives, but they couldn't lose face.
Besides, she was such a jade-like, youthful, and fragrantly beautiful senior. Though they were delinquents, they were still normal boys. How could they bring themselves to lay a hand on her?
Coupled with their fear after seeing Yuyin knock out Zhang Biaoyang with two kicks, they were all intimidated. No one dared to bother Yuyin anymore, and so they simply watched as Senior Yuyin left.
This also allowed Yuyin's taut nerves to relax somewhat.
From this conflict, Yuyin had gained a total of 24 Soul Charm Points, far exceeding the 5 she had gained before. After all, the last time was just accidentally kicking a good ball, whereas today, she had knocked down one of the top five strongest students in the school, the campus tyrant, the "Pujiang Demon" Zhang Biaoyang, with two kicks. The shock this gave to the onlookers was on a completely different level.
Yuyin felt that although she got 8 Soul Charm Points from Zhang Biaoyang, the majority came from the stunned crowd. All the Soul Charm Points were related to emotional fluctuations, to shock and awe.
Walking on her way home, Yuyin suddenly felt an unprecedented sense of relief.
Finally, she no longer had to be afraid of the idiot sitting on the broken little chair by the door staring at her legs. Since she could defeat Zhang Biaoyang, three or four ordinary perverts or petty hooligans probably couldn't get near her.
Yuyin finally had a basic ability to protect herself!
They say the hero saves the beauty, but by a strange twist of fate, she had not transformed into a hero but had been reborn as a beauty.
In that case, she would have to save herself.
Back home, Yuyin didn't even bother to shower, lying directly on her bed as her consciousness entered the space of the God-Devouring Chess.
Because her Soul Charm Points had been at 0 these past few days, she hadn't gone in to check.
Yuyin's consciousness floated between the vast mountains and seas. With a thought, she prepared to Charm a chess piece.
Dingling.
The five altars appeared once more.
“Hm?”
Yuyin noticed that among the few familiar faces, a little girl in a black cloud-dress had appeared. This little girl had shoulder-length black hair, large eyes, and a gaze that was both innocent and profound.
She had never seen this little girl before?
Didn't the God-Devouring Chess only show various Night Spirits she had seen? It was possible that among the many Night Spirits of Magic City, she had glimpsed a certain monster without paying attention, but to have missed an entire person seemed unlikely.
Beneath the little girl, the altar read: Xiao Yuan, 1-Star.
No grade?
This made Yuyin even more curious.
“Spend 3 Soul Charm Points to attempt to Charm Xiao Yuan,” the female will said.
Yuyin had points to spare now. Something so unique was naturally worth a try; otherwise, it might be gone tomorrow.
She immediately attempted to Charm her.
Success!
She had been prepared for failure with this unique little girl; if it failed, she would have saved up to 9 Soul Charm Points to try again, but she had succeeded on the first try.
Yuyin was a bit happy; it felt like a rare piece. With her Soul Charm Points now plentiful, she then Charmed the remaining two Night Patrol Little Ghosts, the Human-Faced Carp, and the Winged Snake.
“Ding. Cumulative spending exceeds 10. There is now a chance to recruit higher-tier chess pieces. Additionally, you can spend 2 Soul Charm Points to refresh all altars at any time,” the female will announced.
“Oh?”
Yuyin was also eager to purchase more chess pieces to speed up her cultivation. Although it pained her a little, she felt she should at least refresh once to see what happened.
Dingling, five brand-new chess pieces appeared in a flash of light.
As expected, a new monster appeared.
It was a stout, filthy monster with the head of a wild boar, and on its back was a large wooden frame from which an oil lamp hung.
Miner, 1-Star, Green Grade.
Next to it was a Medicine Maiden.
Thinking that the previous Medicine Maiden's effect was still unclear, Yuyin didn't Charm her, but instead Charmed this Miner Pig Demon.
Charming something of this caliber was, naturally, a success, costing 2 Soul Charm Points.
The Miner Pig Demon looked fierce and brutish, but when it looked toward Yuyin, it revealed a lewd and lustful expression. But Yuyin had no physical form in this space, so how could it know what she looked like?
Night Patrol Little Ghosts were basically consumables. Yuyin bought one more, and a pair of Yao Ru Birds (a pair counts as one chess piece) to try them out.
Just like that, her 24 Soul Charm Points were squandered in a few minutes, leaving only 11.
Yuyin realized she had to save some. Otherwise, if a rare piece appeared later and she had no points, it would be a real pity.
Now it was time to see what these new pieces did.
After being sent out, the Miner Pig Demon was quite diligent, finding a cliff face by the river, taking the iron pickaxe hanging from his back, and starting to dig.
He really was a miner.
Yuyin left him alone for now and turned her attention to Xiao Yuan.
So, what was Xiao Yuan for?
Yuyin sent out Xiao Yuan. Her gait was sometimes light and cheerful like a little girl's, sometimes a bit introverted, as if she were afraid of her surroundings. Could chess pieces also feel fear? But seeing such a delicate little loli walking alone in the deep forest, Yuyin felt a pang of instinctual pity.
“Should I send a few ghosts to protect her? Otherwise, won’t she be carried off by a monster? It’s a pity I can’t give specific commands to my pieces…” Yuyin thought helplessly.
However, at that moment, Yuyin discovered that the three squads of newly summoned Night Patrol Little Ghosts from the starting point moved, hopping along to follow Xiao Yuan, truly protecting her all around.
