Chapter 83 -Getting back home
Chapter 83 -Getting back home
Jake threw another punch, barely missing the officer's jaw. "You don't get it! My kid is missing! I need to get back home!I need to see him.I didn't even get to hold him... "
"Sir, calm down!" The officer, struggling to hold Jake back, shouted. "We need you to cooperate!"
"I am cooperating! But you people are wasting time! Every second counts!" Jake's voice was raw with desperation, breaking, cracking, squeaking.Lea stepped forward. Her eyes were wide with fear as she tried to intervene, "Please, he's telling the truth! Our son is out there, we need to find him!" She tried to reason with another officer, her voice shaking. "He's only three! He must be so scared. "
"Ma'am, we need both of you to come to the station. We'll sort this out there," the officer said firmly, grabbing her arm.
Lea yanked her arm back. "You're not listening! If anything happens to Kai, it'll be on you!" She was fuming but it was no use. They were on foreign soil and they had broken their rule. Jake was being handcuffed, his face squashed against the car that he was driving. But he continued to struggle. "You can't do this! My son needs me!" He twisted in the officer's grip, eyes burning with anger and fear. "You’re wasting precious time!Don't you get it? " He was yelling his lungs out.
"Enough!" One of the officers barked. "You’re both coming with us. This isn't helping your case."
"I swear, if anything happens to him..."Jake gritted through his teeth. The officers didn't respond, shoving them into the back of the squad car. The doors slammed shut, leaving Jake and Lea in tense silence.
They sat in the station for what seemed like hours as the police went through their verification process and more. Jake occasionally threw his hands around and it only resulted in him being locked up as Lea ran back and forth, trying to protest.
It wasn't until Mercy stormed into the police station, her eyes blazing with fury. "Where the hell are they?" she demanded, slamming her hands on the front desk.
"Ma'am, please calm down..." the officer started, but she cut him off. "Don't you 'ma'am' me! My brother and his girlfriend are in here, and they should have never been brought in. Where are they?" she barked. The officer swallowed nervously and gestured toward the holding area. "Right this way." She had a lawyer along with her and just before she reached the officers had received a call from their higher officers. No wonder the reaction. They did realise they had locked up some important people.
As soon as Mercy saw Jake and Lea, she rushed to them. "Are you both alright?" she asked, her voice softer but still laced with anger.
"We're fine," Jake muttered, rubbing his wrists where the handcuffs had been. "Do you have any news about Kai?" Mercy shook her head.
She spun around to face the officers. "How could you idiots detain them when their child is missing? What the hell were you thinking?"
"Ma'am, they were resisting..." one officer began, but Mercy cut him off. "Resisting? They were desperate! Their son is missing, and you wasted precious hours detaining them. You should have been out there helping them not dragging them in here!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the station. "We followed protocol," the officer tried to explain, but Mercy's glare silenced him. "Protocol be damned! You’ve cost us valuable time. If anything happens to that boy, it's on your head," she threatened, her voice cold and unwavering."You bunch of idiots," Mercy snapped. She turned back to Jake and Lea, her face softening slightly. "Let's get out of here. Percy is waiting for us outside! "
The three of them hurdled together as soon as they stepped out of the police station. It had started raining heavily and the thunder claps made it worse. " Damn this weather! How are we even going to... " Jake started.
" Don't worry. We checked with the Lille Lesquin airport. We got a jet on standby. The storm does catch up there until some more hours. If we are able to drive through this weather and reach there in time, we will be good to go. " Mercy explained as they ran towards Percy's waiting car.
He unlocked the doors for them as the girls got in the back and Jake took the wheel. " Here goes nothing! "
Jake's knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel, his foot pressed hard on the accelerator. The windshield wipers struggled against the torrential rain, barely clearing the view ahead. His jaw was set, eyes focused, as they sped through the narrow, winding streets.
Mercy clutched the seatbelt, her eyes darting nervously to the speedometer. "Jake, just be careful," she urged, but her voice was lost in the roar of the engine and the pounding rain. The car skidded slightly as Jake took a sharp turn, narrowly avoiding a collision with a lamppost. "Hold on!" he shouted, his voice tense. "We’re going to make it. We have to make it."
" Jake, keep your eyes on the road! " Percy murmured from the side as they approached a crowded intersection. The traffic light turned red, but Jake didn’t slow down. "Jake, the light!" Mercy screamed, but he was already swerving around the cars.
Horns honked from all direction but Jake's eyes strained ahead and he could see the lights of the airport. The rain poured slower but nevertheless the roads were wet. He hit the accelerator, absolutely crossing the speed limit.
As they approached the airport entrance, Jake slammed on the brakes, the car skidding to a halt just in front of the terminal.
