Were you mine?

Chapter 17 The Rodgers

Chapter 17 The Rodgers

Meanwhile at the Rodgers' mansion -

" Mama! It means so much to me! How could you hide that letter from me? It's a good thing that they thought of using my alternate number. You were keeping a tag on my phone and my computer? Am I your daughter or a prisoner in this house? "

Mercy erupted like a volcano when she learnt that her mother had been personally keeping her away from her dreams.

" Do you have any idea how many people struggle to get a contract from that brand? " She was fuming.

But her mother did not lose her calm even for the split of a second.

She elegantly put her tea down and went behind the drawers and fetched some papers, throwing them on Mercy's face.

" Did you forget, little girl, that you are not 'everyone'. I could make you a shareholder in that brand if it means so much to you. But modeling for them is like giving your precious body to them as a clothes hanger. You are my only daughter. You share my last name. You need to always be mindful of that fact. You can't go about loitering here and there for some petty job like those cheap girls. "

Her perfectly red lips pursed as Mercy showed no sign of submission. Instead , her breathing became more laboured.

" Fine. If that's what it means , I don't need your name anymore. "

She ripped the limited edition platinum chain around her neck and dumped it beside the papers that were scattered all over the floor.

" I will no longer be called a Rodger, Mama! I am leaving home. "

She turned her back before stomping her way upstairs.

The butlers flinched at the loud noises of things being thrown here and there but they could not do anything without Elizabeth's order.

Mercy dragged a heavy bag down the stairs before heading off towards the front door.

" The cars... " She stopped as her mother called out. " None of the cars that you use, actually belong to you. Since you are no longer my daughter, I don't see any point in lending them to you. Hand over the keys before you leave. "

Mercy closed her eyes, cursing under her breath.

" This woman... "

She walked right in front of her and threw one key after another at her feet.

As Mercy walked out she bumped into her father. But she said nothing. She didn't even look at him.

Her father was as useless as the TV remote with an actual Television set.

He had no opinion or life of his own. He only mouthed his wife's words now and then.

" Mercy? Where is she going? " He asked his wife a little flabbergasted at her state.

" She said she is leaving us. She doesn't want to bear my name anymore. She wants to whore around in some bikini and miniskirt. That's her calling. "

Elizabeth went around and sat down with one leg over the other, picking up her favourite magazine and reading from where she had left.

" Leaving? And you let her? Without her car? Where will she go? She is just a baby! "

The father looked genuinely worried as he picked up one of the keys from the floor, but he knew he had no say in who got to leave or stay in that mansion.

" Why should I? Let her see the world. She will come running back as soon as she realises there is no way for her to sponsor her luxuries without my help. She is no baby. She is definitely an adult. Adults need to face consequences of their actions. She questioned my authority. She will have to pay for that. "

Mr.Cole looked at the woman who was his other half and whom he loathed with all his heart.

" How can you be so cruel towards your own blood, Elizabeth? "

All that Elizabeth had to do was spare him a glance through her reading glasses.

It was enough to shut him up.

He went back to his room silently but closed the door with a bang.

" Damn! Damn! Damn that witch! " He kicked the rug and the chair because he had no other place to take out his frustration.

" Even after so many years, she still treats me like trash. I am no better than you. " He kept murmuring stamping on the floor, over and over again before almost slipping and landing on his back.

But he was caught just in time before he fell.

" You should be careful, father! "

It was Percy, the son that he knew was not his own blood.

Ironically, he was the one most attentive to his needs and that made him mad.

" Get off me lad! Who gave you permission to enter my room with knocking? "

Percy looked confused.

" The door was wide open, Father. I was just passing by. I could not let father fall and hurt himself. Could I? If you want to scold me for that, I am more than fine. "

He hung his head and obediently stood there bracing for all the insults that was about to be hurled at him.

Mr.Cole looked behind him. The door was indeed open. It must have bouncee back after he flung it in the heat of the moment.

" Just get out of my sight. " He shooed him away with his hand.

" Yes, father! " Percy turned around when Mr.Cole yelled.

"Wait! I have a work for you. "

Percy's face lit up. It was the first time Mr.Cole had talked to him with a pleasant tone.

"Mercy will pick up your call. Talk to her. Ask her where she is lodging. My daughter is too fragile for the harsh world out there.

Keep me updated about her whereabouts. "

" Yes, father. Of course. " He nodded with a smile before turning around.

" And wait... Elizabeth must not know about this. Alright?"

Percy nodded.

" I understand, Father. You are just worried about Mercy. Don't worry, Mother will not get any sniff of this. "
