Simon froze at those words. He glanced back at the room where his feverish, nearly unconscious child and wife lay; their wounds were still bandaged.
Those injuries came from yesterday’s ambush by scavengers.
Simon knew perfectly well how dangerous the place had become, but with his wife and child burning with fever and the room’s dwindling supplies, he had no other choice.
If they left without survival supplies, the three of them would stand little chance of surviving, so he had been forced to stay—caring for his family while ready at any moment to fight to the death against any approaching enemy.
His heart swayed.

"Temperature 39.2°C, dehydrated and weak, heart rate 121, blood pressure 149/94, blood oxygen 98%... wounds show signs of infection and need debridement..."
The Doctor reported quickly. With Fang's help, he hooked them up for IV fluids and promptly cleaned and treated the wounds; the two patients cooperated smoothly.
Half an hour of treatment passed, and the woman and child's conditions visibly stabilized.
