Wasteland Hideout: Upgrading from the Sewers

Chapter 185: Rescuing Dale, Hogg’s Plot

Chapter 185: Rescuing Dale, Hogg’s Plot

Clatter, clatter, clatter.......

Boom......

The sudden attack stunned the Raiders from Thug Prison into a daze!

They had only been notified that morning to come and pick up survivors. Why would the Black Shield Police Department stage an ambush here?

But now was not the time to ponder that.

“Enemy attack!”

Instincts honed by long combat made the Raiders immediately raise their weapons to fight back and withdraw.

But Carmen, who had lain in ambush long ago, wasn’t about to let them escape.

The battle ended extraordinarily quickly. The Black Shield Police Department won a decisive victory. Except for one unlucky man struck by stray fire, everyone else emerged unscathed.

All of Thug Prison’s Raiders were annihilated.Carmen walked slowly to Broken Hand, who had been subdued.

Broken Hand was lying on the ground now, hands over his head, blood smeared across his scalp and face. The Black Shield officers naturally showed no mercy to this man who had planned to sell survivors to Thug Prison.

Carmen gave Broken Hand a kick with his foot.

“Is there anyone here named Dale?”

Broken Hand froze at the question!

“Dale? Sir, there’s no one named Dale here!”

Broken Hand wore a pleading look.

But Dale in the crowd heard Carmen’s words and suddenly lifted his head to look at Carmen.

“Lower your head!”

A thug suddenly kicked hard.

Dale was knocked down to the ground with a sharp “ow,” which drew Carmen’s gaze.

The thug’s next kick had already been raised, ready to land.

Dale suddenly shouted, “Sir, I’m Dale, my name is Dale.”

At his shout, the thug’s foot hovered in midair. He had, of course, heard Carmen’s earlier question.

Although he did not know why the commander was calling for someone named Dale, he knew how to behave.

He immediately stood aside and looked toward Carmen.

Carmen approached Dale.

“You’re Dale?”

Actually, as soon as Dale shouted his name, regret rose in his heart. He didn’t know why the other party was looking for him, but at the time some impulse made him call out.

There was no time to regret now. Facing Carmen’s gaze, he forced himself to speak.

“Yes, I’m Dale!”

Carmen squatted in front of him and scrutinized him carefully.

“This guy looks like he has no combat ability at all. What use is he?”

Carmen thought to himself.

“Where was your shelter before?”

“Ah....” Dale was startled for a moment, but quickly recovered and said, “Sir, in the subway tunnels.”

“How did you survive until now?”

“Sir, I raise insects. I’ve survived by eating them.”

Carmen nodded slightly, wearing a contemplative expression.

The information he received this morning did mention that Dale had been taken from the subway tunnels. This had to be the same person.

He glanced up at the sky, already thick with clouds, the air heavy with moisture. By Carmen’s experience, a thunderstorm was about to break.

“Take him back with you...” He looked at Er Xiao.

“Boss, what about the others?” Er Xiao pointed at the other survivors and the scavengers from the Broken Hand group.

Carmen had already risen and walked toward the combat vehicle, leaving Er Xiao only his retreating back and a waving hand gesture.

“I heard the zoo needs scavengers. Send them there together!”

“Understood, boss!”

Dale watched the scene in front of him in terror, as two thugs dragged him toward the pickup truck.

His body trembled like a marionette.

He didn’t know why he was being taken, nor what his fate would be.

At the moment, all he could see was darkness.

Carmen climbed into the vehicle and pulled out a walkie-talkie.

[Found Dale, matches your information. How do you want us to handle him?]

Soon, a reply came back:

[Arrange it however you like for now. Meet at the usual place tonight for details!]

“Meet? That means something important again!”

Carmen knew his ally’s habits well. If it wasn’t important, there wouldn’t be a meeting.

[Got it!]

Before long Er Xiao sat in the passenger seat.

“Boss, people and supplies are handled!”

“Then head back. It’s time to report to the Police Chief.”

As the convoy departed, Carmen closed his eyes to rest.

Halfway there, he looked at Er Xiao.

“Er Xiao, you personally take charge of Dale. Don’t let anyone notice. Keep him under your wing for now and teach him the rules.”

“Okay! I understand!”

Er Xiao nodded gently, hesitated for a moment, then looked at Carmen.

“Boss, about last night’s situation— I already asked the brothers. They all saw a person who looked like a wolf standing on a rooftop howling at the moon. It was so creepy! Do you think—”

Before he could finish, he met Carmen’s warning look and a slight shake of the head.

He immediately fell silent. Though Carmen said nothing, their long-standing tacit understanding made Er Xiao grasp his meaning.

He only grew more cautious about the matter, and his thoughts drifted back to the encounter in the sewers a few days ago.

“Forget it. Everything follows the boss.”

Soon the convoy returned to the Black Shield Police Department headquarters. Er Xiao left with a terrified-looking Dale.

Carmen went to Police Chief Hogg’s office.

Commander Lao Ke happened to be there as well. They seemed to be discussing something and looked toward Carmen when he entered.

Carmen saluted Hogg and Lao Ke.

“Chief, we received word this morning that scavengers were secretly capturing survivors to sell to Thug Prison. My men laid an ambush and eliminated twenty-six Raiders. The scavengers and survivors have been taken to the zoo. We recovered three combat vehicles and a number of weapons and survival supplies, which I’ve handed over to Commander Ika in logistics.”

Hogg nodded slightly.

“Well done!”

Commander Lao Ke smiled at Carmen as well.

“The strike team you led has suffered some losses recently. It seems Thug Prison has new combat weapons. If you have the right people, you can expand the team.”

“However...” Commander Lao Ke’s expression grew serious.

“Be careful to screen for other factions’ rats, and don’t recruit indiscriminately. Avoid scavengers and those looting for food—they’re just a waste of provisions...”

Carmen was startled.

“Understood. But Thug Prison has new weapons? Enough for you and the Chief to pay such attention?”

Hogg and Lao Ke exchanged a glance.

“We deduced it from the scene where Jiaxus fell. In short, the pressure on your clean-up operations is intense!”

As Carmen left, he bumped into a tall woman.

“Commander Ika!”

Carmen looked her way.

Commander Ika gave a slightly aloof nod to Carmen and brushed past into the Chief’s office. A faint fragrance trailed as she passed, and Carmen’s lips curved into a small smile.

He turned and headed downstairs.

Inside the office.

Ika entered and immediately sat on Hogg’s lap, her expression entirely different from the frosty look she had shown Carmen—playful, coquettish, seductive.

Hogg disregarded Lao Ke and slowly stroked her back.

“Baby, did Carmen bring back the spoils?”

“Yes. Just a pile of junk.”

Hogg nodded.

“We still need him to draw fire and to test out Miller the Missionary’s intentions. Carmen still has some use.”

Lao Ke looked at Hogg.

“Chief, are we to let Miller the Missionary and the others do nothing to you? After all, you’re a protege of Green Robe the missionary...”

Hogg cut him off.

“Don’t say it! Those old folks flip-flop. We’ll deal with them later. As long as nothing happens to me, it won’t be easy for them to completely control the Police Department. These assets were taken by me; if they want them, they have to ask my permission.”

As he spoke, a faint green light flickered in Hogg’s eyes.

Lao Ke and Ika both went stiff, the hair on their arms standing on end.
