Chapter 571 - 570: Brief Separation Enhances the Newlywed Bliss (Part 1)
"Is it him? Does he need something?" Ji Rui’s tone noticeably softened."No, it’s just casual chatting, nothing special."
Even though Le Tong was not the most perceptive person, she wouldn’t discuss someone else’s matters in an international long-distance call initiated by the other party. When chatting with Zhang Yi, she indeed had some new ideas forming, but these weren’t urgent to be implemented or prepared. She could wait until Ji Rui resolved things over there and came back to discuss them slowly.
"Where are you now?" Considering the time, Ji Rui should’ve disembarked not long ago.
"Just settled into the hotel, had lunch, and I’m planning to head out."
"It’s snowing there, right? Remember to dress warmly when you go out, and eat something before drinking during social functions, don’t drink on an empty stomach. At the bottom of the black suitcase, there’s a small medicine box with stomach medicine and hangover pills."
Regarding the troubles there, Le Tong knew she couldn’t help, but she could remind Ji Rui to take care of his health, such small matters were something she could do. During lunch, she checked the weather in the city they were staying and naturally slipped into the nagging mode like a mom.
On the other end of the phone, Ji Rui showed no sign of impatience, listened to her words seriously and replied obediently, "Yes, I know. I’ll bring the medicine with me later, I might not have time to call you tonight, after taking care of the two little ones, don’t stay up too late and get to bed early."
Le Tong initially thought when Ji Rui called home he had something important, but now it seemed it was just to report he was safe, and just like how she worried about him, he also seemed a bit uneasy with her taking care of the kids alone at home.
In fact, even when Ji Rui was home, taking care of the kids mainly fell on Le Tong. And Ji Rui lived alone for 30 years and was fine; he didn’t freeze for not wearing enough clothes due to the cold nor did he hurt his stomach from drinking too much.
It’s just that, lovers tend to be like this, not thinking the other can’t take care of themselves, but rather, when the other is not under their watchful eyes, even knowing they can take care of themselves, they still worry and feel uneasy.
"Okay, I’ll send you a message before I sleep, you don’t have to reply." To prevent Ji Rui from worrying, Le Tong also obediently made her promise.
Le Tong didn’t lie to Ji Rui, after coaxing Nuonuo and Baobao to sleep, she took a shower and read a book for a while. At eleven o’clock she went to bed and sent Ji Rui a message.
"I’m going to sleep, good night."
When Le Tong woke up the next day, she found an unread message in her inbox, "Good night!" The sending time was half an hour before.
These days relying on simple text messages and sparse phone calls passed by. Even though Le Tong was busy and tired every day, she was still worn out by the pervasive longing.
Finally, on the fifth night of Ji Rui’s departure, before going to bed, Le Tong sent Ji Rui a message. Unexpectedly, he called back, and as soon as the call connected, she couldn’t help but ask, "Ji Rui, when are you coming back?"
Already lying in bed, Le Tong clearly heard the light chuckle from Ji Rui on the other end, "Why, do you miss me?"
Le Tong’s face heated up, but then she thought, why should it be hot, he can’t see it anyway. Besides, they’ve been apart for so many days, missing him is very normal, isn’t it? After all, they’re newlyweds, aren’t they?
"Yes, I miss you, it’s been five days!" Le Tong admitted openly.
Her straightforwardness and grumbling elicited a string of hearty laughter from him, "I miss you too, don’t worry, things here are mostly settled and unless there are any surprises, we should be back the day after tomorrow."
Le Tong fully believed Ji Rui would notify her beforehand before coming back, so when she finished her meeting two days later and returned to the office to see a tall figure sitting at her desk, she was shocked.
Her body’s instinctive reaction was to step back two steps, and when the person raised his head, Le Tong let out a long sigh of relief, clutched her chest, and glared at the man.
"Whew, when did you come back? Trying to scare me to death?"
The man rose with a smile in his eyes, walked over, and embraced her without saying a word, lowering his head to kiss her lips.
After the kiss, the man reluctantly pulled away slightly, his deep eyes staring at her face, and then his brows furrowed, "Why are you thinner?"
Le Tong touched her face inexplicably, "Thinner? Really?"
The man kissed her cheek, "Yes, the little chubby part here is gone!"
Le Tong’s face flushed instantly, this man, did he borrow some emotional intelligence from Baobao? His methods of coaxing were getting more and more skillful!
The worst part was, though she wasn’t used to it, she found it completely charming.
Ji Rui observed as Le Tong’s face turned bright red, the corners of his lips curled upwards, "Fortunately, the complexion looks good!"
Le Tong got teased so much she wanted to smack him and bumped his calf with her knee.
Ji Rui tightened his grip on her waist, pulling her closer into his embrace.
"Is this how you miss me?"
Le Tong glared at him, "Otherwise, what way do you think?"
Ji Rui tilted his head slightly as if in thought, "I thought, maybe you’d write my name all over a notebook, or fill your computer and phone with pictures of me..."
Le Tong burst into laughter, "Mr. Ji, do you think I’m a sixteen-year-old girl? Writing your name on a notebook, come on, you’re imagining too much!"
After mocking Ji Rui, Le Tong pressed her hands against his chest to try and push him away. Although this was the top floor and few people would come up without reason, it was still an office space, and it was inappropriate for the CEO to be too intimate with his secretary.
Ji Rui seemed to not mind being laughed at in the slightest and had no intention of letting her go.
"From what you said, there was once someone on your notebook?"
Le Tong simply assumed he was joking, considering he might be quite tired from the journey, she struggled to leave, "I’ll go make you a cup of coffee."
Ji Rui refused to let go, "Let’s clear this up first."
Le Tong was intrigued, so she looked up at him, "Clear up what?"
"Who was on your notebook when you were sixteen?" Ji Rui asked quite seriously, unlike he was joking.
Le Tong laughed again, "Mr. Ji, there wasn’t anyone, alright?"
"Really no one?" Ji Rui was still somewhat doubtful.
"Really no one! Hey, I swear, okay?" Le Tong had no way to handle this persistent Ji Rui.
"Alright then..." Ji Rui reluctantly believed, but his hands still showed no sign of release.
Le Tong was about to remind him to let her go when she heard a familiar teasing voice, "Wow, no wonder they say absence makes the heart grow fonder, it’s blinding me!"
The speaker was none other than Le Tong’s cousin, who was also Ji Rui’s brother-in-law, Yang Sheng.
