Chapter 536 - 535: Heart Like a Clear Mirror (Part 1)
Le Tong pushed Nuonuo out of the backyard and placed her in the gazebo sheltered from the wind, watching her sleep peacefully. Only then did she walk over to Baobao and see him teasing a dog with a bone."Baobao..."
Le Tong squatted down beside Baobao and gently pinched his cheek with her hand.
Baobao turned his head to glance at her, and habitually leaned over to give her a kiss on the cheek. "Mommy, did you finish talking with the Old Master?"
The little guy was really smart; he didn’t say "finished talking," but "talked it out."
It seemed he also vaguely sensed the Old Master’s interest in his mommy.
Of course, this interest was within a controllable range, and he believed his mommy could protect herself. So, he obediently stayed in the backyard to play with the dog.
"Yes, we talked it out!" Le Tong affectionately ruffled his hair, feeling quite emotional.
If she had been as smart as Baobao at five or six years old, would the image of her father in her mind have been more real, instead of just a vague outline she tries so hard to remember?
"Mommy, you have Baobao, and also Daddy and Nuonuo."
Baobao rubbed against her a few times, seemingly sensing the inexplicable sadness rising in her heart.
"Mm..." Le Tong kissed the little guy’s neck, moved.
Perhaps, indeed, there was a tacit understanding and connection between her and Baobao. The emotions she tried hard to hide were always easily seen through by this little one.
Baobao didn’t say anything more, snuggling up to Le Tong and playing with the dog for a while, then handing the bone to Le Tong as he walked into the sheltered gazebo to quietly watch the sleeping Nuonuo near the stroller.
Le Tong played with the dog for a bit, then stood up, walked over to the two children, and sat on the stone bench silently watching Nuonuo’s gradually normalizing complexion, just like Baobao.
In the house dozens of meters away, the Old Master stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass in the dining room, with Uncle Jing following him closely as usual.
"Do you think she really is Weikang’s child?"
The Old Master steadily watched Le Tong, who was gently hugging her children, and asked softly.
"Master, haven’t you already made up your mind after asking so much?"
The Old Master silently stared at Le Tong not far away for a long time before letting out a long sigh.
"Her temperament is quite like Weikang’s. On the surface, she seems like a very obedient child, but she’s actually more stubborn than anyone else."
The Old Master was clearly complaining, but the corners of his mouth faintly hinted at a smile.
Uncle Jing hadn’t seen the master so reserved in dealing with someone in a long time, so upon seeing that hint of a smile from him, his old face also broke into a smile.
"Yes, when I saw her stand up and ignore you just now, I was really worried you wouldn’t be able to hold back your anger."
The Old Master didn’t respond, but the arc of his smile seemed to grow wider.
"It was so hard to find her, do you think I dare to get angry? Sigh..."
After the old master spoke, layers of sadness and melancholy filled his eyes.
"Do you think Weikang..."
The Old Master asked half a question but swallowed the other half.
"Master... try not to overthink it, perhaps Miss Tongtong said it just to provoke you!" Uncle Jing carefully advised.
"I sure hope so, but given the girl’s temperament, she wouldn’t bother to deceive an old guy like me..."
The Old Master’s voice grew quieter, as some things only hurt more when seen clearly. So he actually preferred that the girl was deceiving him.
"That girl rejected me so quickly; do you think she would feel it’s impossible? Actually, she’s probably perfectly clear about things in her mind. She understands everything, but she simply doesn’t want to acknowledge me. She doesn’t say it, but fundamentally, she’s guessed a lot, and I am sure, right now, she hates me terribly."
Uncle Jing thought to himself, well, she is indeed your granddaughter. All so clever, and all so stubborn, knowing exactly how to upset you!
"These years, this little girl must have had a really tough time..." The Old Master made no effort to conceal his affection for the girl.
Uncle Jing’s heart skipped a beat, wondering if the master was overly invested in this girl? Uncle Jing, who had followed him for years, had never quite seen the Old Master care so much about a Yang family junior, even more than Young Master Sheng, his successor.
Admittedly, given the jade pendant and the girl’s striking similarity to Young Master Weikang’s character, there’s indeed a fifty percent chance she is Miss Yang, the granddaughter. However, nothing in this world is absolute, and if the identification result turns out to be negative, how disappointed will the Old Master be?
"Are the people you found reliable?" the Old Master asked again when Uncle Jing didn’t respond.
"Yes, it’s the same person as before."
Upon hearing this, the Old Master frowned and said, "Find someone else!"
"Ah?!" Uncle Jing looked at the Old Master in confusion. "Haven’t we always had him investigate things?"
"But he never managed to find any information about Weikang for me!" The Old Master was somewhat angry.
Uncle Jing thought about it, and it seemed that was indeed the case.
"Then... shall I find someone else?" Uncle Jing tested cautiously.
"Yes, find another one, and make it fast."
Uncle Jing received the order and immediately turned around to take care of it.
When Uncle Jing returned after making his phone call, the Old Master’s standing posture hadn’t changed at all.
"Master, you should get some rest."
Uncle Jing brought over a chair and tried to help him sit down.
But the Old Master showed no interest in sitting; instead, he instructed once more, "Prepare two bedrooms in the main house, and talk to Sheng. Make sure he keeps them here tonight, no matter what."
Uncle Jing then quickly turned around to instruct the servants to prepare the rooms. He was initially going to send someone to find Yang Sheng in the hall but decided it would be more prudent to go there himself.
"Uncle Jing, why did you come here yourself? Where’s my grandfather?" Yang Sheng parted the group surrounding him and stepped to the side, surprised that Uncle Jing wasn’t staying with the Old Master.
"The Old Master said he was a bit tired and wanted to rest at the main house, leaving this side for Young Master Sheng to manage."
Uncle Jing had previously phoned Yang Sheng with the results of the jade pendant’s appraisal, including the news that the Old Master had suggested Le Tong undergo DNA testing but was rejected, which he also relayed to Yang Sheng.
"Alright, so what brings Uncle Jing here?" Yang Sheng replied, while his eyes scanned the crowd for Ji Rui.
"The Old Master wants Young Master Sheng to make sure Miss Tongtong and her companions stay overnight by any means necessary."
Yang Sheng wasn’t at all surprised by Uncle Jing’s request; however, there were things beyond his control.
"I’ll try my best!" Given his understanding of Le Tong, if the girl wants to avoid something, it’s not easy for anyone to break down her defenses.
"Maybe Young Master Sheng could speak with Mr. Ji?"
