Treasure Hunt: Tycoon's Priceless Runaway Wife

Chapter 421: The Unknown Future

Chapter 421: The Unknown Future

The attacker who stabbed Ji Rui was ultimately diagnosed with a history of mental illness. This outcome seemed to be something Ji Rui had anticipated all along.

Therefore, when the lawyer reported to him over the phone, he showed no surprise and merely instructed coolly, "Hmm, let them continue following up."

Le Tong, busy on one side, vaguely guessed something from Ji Rui’s conversation with the lawyer and couldn’t help but worry. She glanced at him a few times, noticing that after hanging up the phone, he focused on his work with no intention to discuss matters with her. She wisely chose to swallow back the questions she had.

She was very self-aware; the trouble Ji Rui was encountering was something an ordinary person like her truly couldn’t help with. Presumably, he didn’t want her to worry blindly. Since that’s the case, it was best for her to be tactful and avoid asking too much.

As for Ji Rui, he didn’t tell Le Tong about this matter. First, he genuinely didn’t want her to worry. Second, he never had the habit of confiding his encounters or issues, whether good or bad, to others.

In the past, if he really felt suffocated, he would find a few childhood friends to have drinks and unwind. Even while drinking, he would only drink in silence, internalizing his troubles, which would only get buried deeper with alcohol.

After meeting Yang Sheng, this situation slightly improved, but generally speaking, he still wasn’t very good at expressing himself.

The two kept silent, each focused on their tasks.

The child who came with them to the Ji Family, understanding that daddy returned with injuries and mommy for work, after pouting to Ji Rui once, quietly nestled in the sofa in the reception room, playing on his own and bothering no one.

Le Tong was preoccupied with Ji Rui’s issues, her heart suspended uneasily, and her work efficiency visibly slower than usual.

Ji Rui finished handling a document, picked up his cup intending to drink some water, and inadvertently glanced at Le Tong. He noticed the files spread out before her, yet her gaze was dazedly focused into the void, clearly, she was distracted.

"Le Tong?"

Seeing her like that, Ji Rui suspected she had concerns and even considered asking her to take Baobao home to rest later.

Le Tong turned her head, looking at him blankly, "Hmm?"

Her gaze swept over the cup in his hand, quickly sobering up, "Is it out of water? I’ll pour you a cup."

Saying so, she reached over and took the cup without asking, kicked the chair back with her foot, picked up the cup, and quickly walked away.

"Baobao, come here."

Le Tong beckoned to Baobao quietly reading on the sofa, and the little guy nimbly got up, put on his shoes quickly, and ran over to hold Le Tong’s hand.

Le Tong was worried about Baobao feeling bored, so she decided to take him out for some fresh air.

"Mommy..."

In the tea room, Le Tong focused on making tea for President Ji, while Baobao who followed her tugged at her clothes.

"Hmm?" Le Tong thought Baobao was bored, bent down, and kissed him on his little lips.

Baobao looked up, his thick eyelashes fluttering, his dark eyes brightly gazing at Le Tong, "Baobao wants to be a brother..."

The little fellow’s handsome, pretty face was full of hope, yet his tone seemed pitiful.

Le Tong was momentarily stunned, realizing the little guy might indeed be there to plead Ji Rui’s case.

"Did your daddy ask you to say this?"

Le Tong ruffled his hair, stood up, and poured the brewed tea into the cup.

"No! Baobao himself wants..." Baobao tugged at Le Tong’s clothes again.

Le Tong picked up the cup filled with tea, took Baobao’s hand, and walked out of the tea room, "Baobao, a little baby is a gift from heaven to us. It’s not something you can have just because you want!"

Regarding her relationship with Ji Rui, Le Tong felt utterly uncertain. Hence, all she contemplated was the immediate issues, simply considering giving each other a chance to understand and adapt to each other. As for what would happen once they truly understand each other, she hadn’t thought deeply, nor could she afford to. Everything, she’d just let it happen naturally.

"So, if Baobao is well-behaved, will a little baby come to our house?"

This question from Baobao really gave Le Tong a headache. If she nodded, she feared that she and Ji Rui might not reach that step. Making a random promise now would only disappoint Baobao later.

If she shook her head, she couldn’t bear to see her dear son’s disappointed look.

"Baobao, mommy truly doesn’t know how to answer this question."

Essentially, she was profoundly uncertain about her and Ji Rui’s future.

Though she agreed to take a chance with Ji Rui, she had little faith they’d succeed in the end.

Love, this thing, inherently is very abstract. You can’t grasp, touch, or even weigh it. How much she likes him and how much he likes her, and whether this affection is enough for them to overcome all odds to be together, Le Tong doesn’t know any of this.

What she did know was that she and Ji Rui, whether in thought or lifestyle, were people from two different worlds.

The life he once lived and everything he’s experiencing now, she might not necessarily understand.

The injuries and pain he endured, even if she could see them, she might not have the ability to heal him.

Just like earlier when she listened to him talking on the phone, thinking about the possible issues he might face made her heartache terribly, yet she lacked even the courage to ask.

And he seemingly had no intention to complain to her, probably because he felt he couldn’t get real comfort and help from her.

Thinking about this, Le Tong sighed softly and bent down to nuzzle Baobao’s face a few times.

Fortunately, Baobao’s mind was unlike other children; receiving such a reply from Le Tong didn’t particularly disappoint him or evoke any negative emotions, he simply nodded in understanding.

"Okay, alright! When mommy knows the answer, tell Baobao, okay?"

Le Tong breathed a sigh of relief, quickly stepping down the stairs that her dear son had built for her.

"Mm."

Back in the office, Ji Rui was still engrossed in his work, hearing the door, he looked up at the two.

"What do you want for lunch?" His eyes quickly glanced over Le Tong and Baobao.

This matter was something Le Tong always handled before; now, President Ji actually considered it amidst his busy schedule, truly rare.

"Anything. You and Baobao can decide."

Le Tong herself wasn’t picky with food, besides, considering Baobao and Ji Rui’s current physical condition, special care was indeed necessary.

"Alright, I’ll ask Manager Chen to send it over."

Saying this, Ji Rui picked up the desk phone and dialed out.

Le Tong handed the cup to him, noticing a large portion of her documents had unknowingly transferred to Ji Rui’s side, she discreetly moved them back.

Ji Rui reached out trying to stop her, but Le Tong said, "Don’t you have lots of other things to handle? Leave these to me!"
