Chapter 400

As Mr. Lu Xun once said: “If you suggest opening a skylight, no one will agree. But if you propose tearing down the whole roof, suddenly they’ll agree to the skylight.”

That was pretty much how Ning Chu felt right now.

If someone told her she was about to grow horns, she’d never be able to accept it.

But compared to being pregnant and having a child... well, growing horns didn’t sound so bad anymore.

She carefully ran her fingers over her head, trying to feel for any small bumps.

Hmm… nothing yet.

Actually, her grandma’s horns had been kind of cute.

The real issue was that if she grew horns, she would visibly stop being human.

A tail could be hidden, but horns? No chance.

The whole school would know she wasn’t human anymore.

And if she accidentally slipped up one day, her succubus identity would be exposed for sure.

Most people already had strong stereotypes about succubi—to them, a succubus was nothing more than a walking sex machine.

Only someone like Lily, who always kept her icy poker face in public, could ever hope to break that impression.

The more Ning Chu thought about it, the more tangled her emotions became.

Should she be happy that she wasn’t pregnant—that she hadn’t fallen that far—or should she mourn the fact that she was about to grow… a steering wheel on her head?

On the bus ride home, Ning Chu sighed heavily, resting her head against Wen Yang’s shoulder.

She wondered if ground-up horns can be used in medicine.

Wouldn’t be surprising if some local snake-oil salesman sold “succubus horn extract.”

When she tilted her head up to look at Wen Yang, she caught a flash of joy on his face before he quickly tried to cover it with a sad expression.

He patted her head gently, pretending to comfort her.

“It’s okay. What’s done is done. Let’s focus on the future.”

“You’re clearly thrilled,” she accused.

“How could I be? Seeing you so upset, I almost cried.”

His mock tearful look made her laugh despite herself, her mood finally lifting a little.

Turning her face away to hide her smile, she huffed, “You’re probably just thinking about the horns!”

“What horns? I don’t have that kind of kink.”

“Pfft, liar.”

As a hentai protagonist, Wen Yang’s preferences were basically limitless.

And since he was technically a character created by her, their tastes were supposed to be pretty similar…

Problem was, Ning Chu had no intention of turning herself into her own fetish!

What, was she supposed to stare in the mirror and drool over herself now?

That was just weird!

“The stop’s coming up,” Wen Yang said.

“Yeah.”

They’d left school around three-thirty, spent a while at the hospital, and now it was just past six in the evening.

Street vendors were setting up their food stalls near the village entrance.

Students who lived nearby were trickling back home, filling the small, usually quiet village with life.

The smell of grilled snacks wafting through the air made Ning Chu momentarily forget all her worries.

She tugged Wen Yang toward a stinky tofu stand.

“Boss, one order, mild spice!”

“Got it!”

As she waited, Ning Chu looked up at Wen Yang, raised her hands, and made a shape over her head.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“If I grow horns, doesn’t that technically make me taller?”

That thought suddenly made her feel a lot better.

Wen Yang laughed. “Yeah. You’ll be one horn taller than Lily.”

“One horn taller? That sounds so weird…”

Her phone buzzed suddenly. She quickly grabbed it and answered.

It was Yan Xinya.

“Ning Chu! How did the test go? Are you really pregnant?”

“Nope,” Ning Chu replied.

“That’s a relief! You scared me half to death!” Yan Xinya’s voice came through the phone, loud and dramatic. “I just asked Qian Qian about it—she said if an unmarried student gets pregnant, the school might ask her to withdraw! That’s insane!”

“Anyway, what’s your deal? Why was your period so late? You sick or something?”

Endocrine imbalance didn’t really count as a sickness, did it?

Ning Chu didn’t bother hiding it. “The doctor said it’s just hormonal imbalance.”

On the other end, Lily’s calm voice chimed in:

“Is it because she stays up all night playing around with Wen Yang again? Wen Yang’s stamina is impressive~”

“What? We don’t stay up all night! Just late sometimes!” Ning Chu shot Wen Yang a look, cheeks puffed.

“Oh~ well, try to rest more, okay?”

“Mm… it’s not because of that,” Ning Chu mumbled. “The doctor said I’m about to grow horns.”

There was a short silence—then Yan Xinya squealed, “Ehhh?! Steering wheels?! Lily, why don’t you have any? When are you gonna grow one?”

“……”

Ignoring the deadpan silence from Lily, Yan Xinya turned her teasing toward Ning Chu again.

“So when you sleep, won’t you poke holes in your pillow?”

“???”

“And when you’re cuddling on Wen Yang’s chest, won’t you accidentally stab him?”

Ning Chu tilted her head, remembering her grandmother’s curved ram-like horns.

How was she supposed to know? Maybe she should ask her grandma?

“No idea… guess I’ll find out when it happens.”

“Well, as long as you’re not pregnant, that’s what matters. Lily and I are gonna go eat now. Byeee~”

“Mm, bye~”

When the call ended, her stinky tofu was ready. Ning Chu scanned the QR code to pay but kept glancing at Wen Yang’s chest.

Would she actually stab him one day? Like, two bloody holes right in his pecs…

No, that’s ridiculous. Right?

Still, having horns meant her head would be heavier. Would her neck even handle the extra weight?

She was already struggling with her “C-cup burden”—any more weight would be torture!

“What else do you wanna buy?” Wen Yang asked casually, thinking she was just eyeing more snacks.

“Nothing. Let’s just go back.”

She shook her head and unconsciously rubbed her scalp again.

The last few times her body had changed—the silver markings, the tail—it only happened after she’d messed up the story’s plot.

But this time, she hadn’t changed anything… so why were horns still happening?

“Wen Yang,” she said quietly, “what if I end up looking really ugly with horns?”

Wen Yang didn’t even hesitate. “Then you’ll be ugly. I don’t care.”

“I care!” she shot back.

“Then we’ll see if any cosmetic clinic offers horn removal. I’ll save up for you.”

“???”

What kind of thought process was that?!

As they entered their apartment building, Ning Chu’s tone grew softer, more worried.

“What if… I grow wings next?”

“That’d make me less and less human, wouldn’t it?” she muttered under her breath. “It wasn’t supposed to be like this…”

Wen Yang slipped an arm around her shoulders. “It’s fine.”

She opened her mouth to argue, but then he spoke again, voice gentle:

“I’ll always be here, won’t I?”

Her comeback died in her throat. Lowering her gaze, she murmured, “And what if you leave one day? Like my dad did?”

“I’m your protagonist,” Wen Yang said with a grin. “Where could I possibly go?”

“I—” Ning Chu looked up. In his eyes, she saw only her own reflection staring back.

He smiled. “Didn’t you say your novel hit writer’s block? Well, now you’ve got new material.”

“Oh—oh yeah!” Her eyes lit up immediately. Her pace quickened as they headed home.

“Holy crap! I’ve got fresh inspiration!”
