At this point, the rest of the crew got out of their cars.
Never one to linger, Gu Fan turned and fled into the woods.
“Stop, or I’ll shoot!” Dong Ni pulled out a gun, aimed at the fleeing Gu Fan, his eyes full of menace.
Qiao Ya called out, “Dong Ni!”
By that time, Gu Fan had already disappeared into the woods.
Dong Ni was a step too late.
The bullet missed its target and hit a tree trunk instead.
“After him!” Helen, too, had left her car.
With a wave of her hand, she ordered all hands on deck and soon everyone was on Gu Fan’s trail.
Gu Fan headed for the farmland, towards the warehouse.
He knew he couldn’t keep running indefinitely, he’d get caught eventually, so he decided to take refuge in the underground research base and use the environment there to outwit the enemy.
Helen, Qiao Ya, and Dong Ni followed closely.
Seeing Gu Fan heading for the farmland, they burst into laughter.
To them, he was running into a dead end.
Helen snapped her fingers and made a gesture.
Her subordinates immediately took the hint and surrounded the warehouse, confirming that Gu Fan had not escaped.
“If I’m not mistaken, this guy must have gone to the underground research base, thinking he can play hide and seek with us there.” Helen seemed unimpressed and was all smiles.
She then walked towards the direction of the warehouse.
When Helen and her team opened the warehouse doors and searched it, they found no sign of Gu Fan.
Helen was certain, then, that Gu Fan had indeed retreated into the underground research base as she had anticipated.
“Qiao Ya, you and two others keep watch out here.
The rest of you, come with me.” Helen’s commanding tone irked Qiao Ya and Dong Ni, but they had no choice; the higher-ups had vested command authority with Helen.
Qiao Ya shrugged and put on a cooperative face.
“Alright, alright.
As long as we capture Gu Fan, I’ll do whatever you say.”
So Qiao Ya and two others stayed outside, while Helen, Dong Ni, and the remaining twelve people followed the secret passage within the warehouse and ventured down the stairs.
All of them held guns, their expressions resolute.
Helen took out her phone and glanced at the screen.
Through the monitor, she saw Gu Fan running down a corridor.
The corners of her mouth rose in a confident smile.
After Qiao Ya had cleared out the underground research base, he had installed his own camera inside to check if anyone returned after he left.
When Gu Fan, Su Hui, and David returned to the underground research base, Qiao Ya was taken aback.
At first, he was unsure why Gu Fan would return, but once he saw David, it became clear: there must have been something left behind in the underground research base and that is why they had returned for it.
Qiao Ya informed Helen of this situation.
So Helen quickly followed, hoping not to miss a chance to reconstruct the space-time door if their guess was right.
Helen, Dong Ni, and their team quickly arrived at the underground research base.
However, the surroundings were vast and their manpower inadequate and they were clueless as to where Gu Fan might have gone.
Helen divided the group into pairs and sent them out to search for Gu Fan, but Dong Ni disagreed with this strategy, fearing that Gu Fan might exploit this to defeat them one by one.
But Helen ignored this suggestion, and stuck to the pair strategy, as if she didn’t consider Gu Fan a threat.
With no other option, Dong Ni and the others followed Helen’s orders.
Meanwhile, Helen, alongside one of her subordinates, headed to the surveillance room of the underground research base.
She planned to use its surveillance system to find Gu Fan and put an end to this cat-and-mouse game.
But if Helen thought of it, so did Gu Fan.
Gu Fan was already at the surveillance room.
He had damaged all the equipment he could, turned off what he couldn’t damage, and messed up everything else.
He was determined not to allow the enemy to use the surveillance room.
When Helen reached the surveillance room, she found the screens all smashed and the room wrecked.
The vandalism was crude yet effective.
“This kid is good.
He knew I would use the surveillance room to find him, so he preemptively destroyed it.” Helen began to admire Gu Fan for being able to think ahead under such circumstances.
