726: Chapter 726: The Strange Little Town 726: Chapter 726: The Strange Little Town Suddenly, the ancient town was filled with numerous sounds of singing and dancing, and a sky-high blaze implied some sort of event was taking place, sparking curiosity in Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran.
An old man explained that this was a tradition of their town.
Whenever a couple gets married, everyone gathers to celebrate.
It so happened that a couple was getting married that day, so Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran were right on time to partake in the festivities.
Hearing this, Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran were excited and thought it’d be something similar to a modern party.
They immediately decided to attend the celebration with the old man.
Upon reaching the town square, they indeed saw many people hand-in-hand, circling around a bonfire, singing, and dancing.
The joyful atmosphere was hard to resist and made them want to join along.
With the old man’s assistance, Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran successfully joined the procession, holding hands and dancing around the fire with the townsfolk.
Obviously, Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran’s attire didn’t fit that of the town’s locals.
This caught the attention of the townsfolk, however, all eyes were mainly on the newlyweds, with everyone constantly offering them toasts.
Everyone was singing, dancing, and clapping along.
The merry atmosphere seemed unstoppable.
The bonfire blazed brighter, causing Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran to feel they had made the right decision to participate, even considering inviting more friends to join them.
It was deep into the night when the bonfire party finally came to an end.
The townsfolk went home with satisfied looks on their faces.
The old man mentioned that since the town generally doesn’t have many events, this was their happiest moment.
Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran thanked the old man for his hospitality, and following his arrangements, stayed in a small, albeit outdated house with antique furniture.
Being out and about, they thought it wouldn’t hurt to compromise for one night, especially after having such fun, they were thankful to the old man for the arrangements and decided to settle in there.
Staying in such a house, Zhang Yang couldn’t help but comment, “I never thought I’d be staying in a place like this for the first time in my life and find it quite alright.”
“Yeah, I thought I would resist it, but to my surprise…” Yang Xinran couldn’t help but laugh right after speaking.
It had indeed been a memorable day.
With it being rather late, it was time to hit the hay.
As Zhang Yang went to close the window, he noticed some people dancing on the streets.
Zhang Yang thought they were individuals from the bonfire party who hadn’t had enough fun yet, so he called over Yang Xinran to watch them.
Both of them watched from the window and initially found the dancing amusing, but as they continued to watch them, they felt something was wrong.
These people were dancing not for fun but rather, it seemed like some kind of ritual.
Looking at the peculiarly dressed individuals with serious expressions, their strange dance, the silent night, the deserted streets, the atmosphere started to grow uneasy.
Zhang Yang, feeling tense, quickly closed the window.
Yang Xinran couldn’t help but recall the times she, Du Jun, Gu Fan, and Lin Xi visited an ancient town and encountered some strange incidences, followed by their mysterious disappearances one after the other.
Feeling uneasy, she quickly used her phone’s GPS only to find their location displayed as a forest; there were no signs of an ancient town.
Feeling things were going south, she quickly informed Zhang Yang.
Zhang Yang started to feel scared, but he held onto the hope that it could be a mistake.
Yang Xinran noticed that the strange dancers had left the streets, which made her feel slightly relieved.
She hoped she was just overthinking.
Just then, they received a call from a rescue center asking to confirm some information.
Zhang Yang provided the required information to the rescue center and asked when their vehicle would arrive, only to be told to wait for at least another four hours.
The usual inquiry felt abnormal as the rescue center asked them to stay in the car and avoid roaming around.
Zhang Yang informed them that they were in a nearby ancient town and asked the rescue center to inform them once they arrived.
This way, they could rush over to meet them.
However, upon know their whereabouts, the rescue official panicked because the vicinity they were in was supposed to be uninhabited.
No ancient town existed there.
They confirmed Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran must be mistaken and asked them to return to their designated vehicle immediately.
Zhang Yang was annoyed because they were unmistakably in an ancient town, and accused the rescue center of speaking nonsense.
After ending the call in frustration, Zhang Yang noticed Yang Xinran’s pale face.
This made him worried: “What’s wrong, Xinran?
You look terrible.”
“Can we leave this place?
I feel something is not right,” Yang Xinran said, reigniting Zhang Yang’s discomfort.
The ancient house, the outdated furniture, the old-fashioned clothing, everything in the town was out of place in this era.
The more Zhang thought about it, the more he trembled.
He decided that they must leave the place immediately and should not stay a moment longer.
So, while the streets were empty, Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran quietly left.
As they traced back their steps, they couldn’t resist looking back frequently, but they didn’t see anyone following them.
Zhang Yang thought they might have just been scaring themselves and expected everything to be normal by daylight.
He thought about how he would have to explain their sudden departure to the old man.
But as they kept walking, they realized something wrong.
Their path was blocked by a row of trees.
But they clearly remembered this was the way they had come from.
Things weren’t looking good.
Zhang Yang and Yang Xinran took one last look at the eerie silhouettes moving around the empty streets of the ancient town.
Their hearts raced, and they quickly decided to head into the woods.
The next day, at the crack of dawn, the rescue vehicle located Zhang Yang’s car.
The rescuers found the car empty and realized something had gone horribly wrong.
They quickly called their headquarters.
“Oh God, another one.
How many has it been?” one rescuer sighed, looking quite terrified.
“As usual, let’s not say anything about this publically.
Let the special investigators handle the probe,” the other rescuer advised.
