Chapter 5
Chapter 5
General Manager Jang Baekmun seemed surprised that I said I would go today.
"Will you be alright? You can come after your body has fully recovered."
No. It's better to get it over with now that it's been brought up. It's not in my nature to dawdle when there's something to be done.
Besides, I was curious anyway. What kind of people the Mok family members were.
"I can move. But I still need to prepare, so I'll leave in a little while."
"I understand. I will relay that to the Family Head."
General Manager Jang Baekmun replied with a smile and stood up from his seat.
He bowed and looked over Mok Wigun one more time. Then he went outside and headed towards the Mok family estate.
"He certainly has changed. He used to be the type to put things off and find them bothersome."
Jang Baekmun's expression, unlike before, was stiff.
"I don't know if this change is a good thing."
At that moment, Mok Wigun called for Steward Wang. There was something he needed him to do.
"There's been quite a bit of property taken without permission here and there, right?"
Steward Wang sighed and then answered.
"That is. I tried to stop them somehow. I'm sorry."
"I'm not trying to blame you, uncle. It's because I was inadequate."
Just looking at the last incident, Steward Wang had done his best. Such a loyal person deserves to be rewarded.
I have something in mind to give as a reward. But before that, getting back what was stolen comes first.
"How long do you think it will take to organize it?"
"Do you mean everything that has been taken from the outside until now?"
I nodded.
"Yes. Everything. We need to get it all back."
A considerable amount of wealth had been taken because Mok Wigun had acted like such a pushover. Of course, I planned to get it back. It wasn't in my nature to stay still after having my things taken.
"I've written down what was taken as it happened, so I can bring it right away, but."
Steward Wang said there was something a bit ambiguous.
"The title is in your name, Young Master, but there are some businesses that are practically run by others."
"What's that about?"
He said that when Lady Son was alive, there were quite a few businesses. Merchant guilds, escort agencies, taverns, and so on. But after Lady Son's death, the second son, Mok Wipyong's side, took some of them.
"Is there a reason to do it that way?"
"I wouldn't know. Perhaps they were afraid of being criticized if they took the titles as well."
I don't think that that was it. They weren't the type of people to care about such criticism. Rather, they were the type to try and make it clearly their own property.
"Come to think of it, there is something a little suspicious..."
According to the steward, businesses that were doing well are continuously suffering losses. And the amount of the losses is snowballing.
"I see. Well. We'll look into that gradually. For now, let's take a look at what you've organized so far."
"Yes. I'll bring it right now."
As the steward left, Pyeon Jeoksu snickered.
"They're passing the buck."
"What's that?"
"Well, you've only rolled around on battlefields, so you wouldn't know much about this kind of thing."
I admit it. I never had the chance to experience things like merchant guilds or businesses.
"To put it simply, that guy, the second son, is playing tricks. He's taking the profits for himself and passing all the losses to the businesses under your name."
He said it wasn't a difficult thing to do if you just manipulated the ledgers well.
"I know a lot about that side of things too. I've been a noble with my own territory, and I've run a merchant guild before."
The Vampire Lord was an immortal being. It was impossible to know how long he had lived. In that long time, he had experienced all sorts of things. Just what I had heard was immense.
"Really? Then I'll have to calculate all that and get it back too."
"It doesn't seem like it will be easy, but since you're the one doing it, I'm looking forward to it."
Of course. What kind of person am I? I don't know about other things, but I'm someone who can't stand having my things touched. Whether it's property or people.
"By the way, it seems like you've completely become Mok Wigun now."
"I have to adapt anyway."
If I have to live as Mok Wigun anyway, shouldn't I try to live it properly?
"So, what's Mok Wigun's is mine. Of course, I have to get it back."
My body was feeling better to some extent, so it was time to start moving in earnest.
"But don't we need to hire more people? The wet nurse is doing everything by herself, she's going to collapse at this rate."
That was something I was already thinking about.
There was a shortage of people in the annex. While Mok Wigun was making a mess, even the few people who were there had left. A big part of it was also that money had become scarce as people took things from here and there.
"Not yet. It's not too late to replenish the staff after I've sorted out who I can truly trust."
It wasn't just the annex. You could say that all the businesses Mok Wigun managed were a mess.
So I planned to watch a little longer. Isn't this a good opportunity? I planned to use this chance to see who was truly loyal and trustworthy.
"I'll have to clean house at the merchant guilds and other businesses on this occasion too."
The same goes for the places I'll get back. So I planned to look into them beforehand.
"But will they give it up easily?"
"Of course, they won't."
But I just have to make it so they have no choice but to give it up.
"I told you there's a good thing about being a troublemaker, right? You'll find out why."
"I don't know what you're going to do, but it sounds exciting."
Pyeon Jeoksu giggled, saying he wished something would happen soon.
While we were talking, the steward came in with the organized documents.
"This is everything that's happened so far, right?"
"Yes, Young Master. I've written down every single thing."
Steward Wang was a very meticulous person. The events that had occurred were written down in detail by date.
After confirming the contents he had organized, I set out to head to the main house, the Mok family estate. Come to think of it, this was the first time I was going outside the annex.
"So that's the Mok family estate."
The annex where Mok Wigun was staying was on Mount Yakwang. As I went down the mountain and looked at the town, I could tell where the Mok family estate was at a glance.
Part of it was from memory, but it was impossible for anyone not to know. It was the largest and most magnificent building.
As I came down from the mountain and walked the streets, people glanced at me and whispered.
"They say he died and came back to life."
"So what? He'll just cause trouble again."
"Oh my. I heard he's become a completely different person."
"Do people change that easily? He's like that now, but once his body gets a little better, he'll be the same again."
I could tell from people's reactions what kind of treatment I had received. To speak like that even though they knew I could hear was to openly ignore me.
'Mok Wigun managed to endure this.'
It felt dirty. But it would change soon.
"What are these people saying in front of the Young Master?"
The steward glared at the people.
"Leave them be."
"Aigoo. How can I just watch them talk about the Young Master to his face?"
Steward Wang and the wet nurse, Dokgo, were truly loyal people. Both of them had grown up with Mok Wigun's mother, Lady Son, since she was young, so it wouldn't be wrong to call them family.
That's why they had stayed by Mok Wigun's side even when everyone else had left.
"Will they stop just because you tell them to?"
As I said, the people didn't stop. For Steward Wang's words to have power, I needed to have power.
Although there were rumors that he had changed, to the people, Mok Wigun was still a troublemaker and a moron. They looked down on Mok Wigun, so how could Steward Wang's words have any effect?
So, I just needed to gain power. Then it would be resolved naturally. I walked on, not caring what people said. In the meantime, we arrived at the Mok family estate.
"Who is this?"
As I entered, a welcome face was waiting.
"Youngest brother. I'm glad to see you looking so healthy."
The second son, Mok Wipyong. He approached with a bright smile on his face. When he got close enough to touch, he said in a whisper.
"But I'm disappointed. To treat the people I sent like that."
He tried to grab my shoulder.
A memory surfaced. It was an action he often used when threatening Mok Wigun. He would grip his shoulder, apply pressure, and whisper cold words. Mok Wigun would get scared every time and do as he said.
The steward blocked Mok Wipyong.
"Aigoo, Young Master. His illness isn't fully healed, so the Young Master is not well."
For a moment, Mok Wipyong's expression turned icy.
"Where does a mere steward dare to block my way?"
Mok Wipyong tried to draw the sword at his waist.
'Right. This is the kind of guy he was.'
He was the kind of guy who wouldn't hesitate to cut a person down for such a trivial matter. A cruel and selfish bastard. That's why Mok Wigun was even more afraid of his second brother, Mok Wipyong.
But not now. I am someone who has survived on a blood-soaked battlefield. This kind of child's play is just laughable.
Besides, I absolutely cannot tolerate anyone touching my people. I had the steward step back and then step forward.
"This is good timing. There was something I needed to settle."
"Settle? My youngest brother has changed a bit, just as I heard. Talking back to your older brother?"
"What do you mean, talking back? It's just a conversation between brothers."
I said as if it were no big deal.
Mok Wipyong's expression hardened slightly. He narrowed his eyes and observed his younger brother.
Mok Wigun was not the type to talk back to him like this. The Mok Wigun he remembered couldn't even meet his eyes. He would also stutter.
Although they were brothers, he didn't see them as equals. He saw him as someone positioned below him. But that guy was now saying that they were equals.
"Looking at it, there seems to be quite a lot to settle."
Mok Wipyong laughed.
"What's there to settle between brothers? Your older brother will take care of everything, so just know that."
"That's the most ridiculous bullshit I've heard recently."
Mok Wigun actually snickered. At that sight, Mok Wipyong's face hardened. But his brother's next words were even more shocking.
"Everything you've stolen so far. I'm going to have to get it all back."
Mok Wipyong's face turned as red as a heated piece of iron.
"You must really want to die, don't you?"
He said as he drew his sword. The cold blue blade glinted in the sunlight. But Mok Wigun actually took a step forward.
"Are you confident you can kill me?"
Instead, it was Mok Wipyong who was flustered. If he scared him this much, he should be trembling and backing away, but his expression wasn't scared at all. In truth, wasn't it impossible to cut down his own brother in the Mok family estate where so many people came and went?
"You were here."
It was General Manager Jang Baekmun who broke the tension between the two. When the general manager appeared, Mok Wipyong sheathed his sword and said.
"You. Consider yourself lucky."
The general manager pretended not to have seen the scene and said.
"Let's go. The Family Head is waiting."
Mok Wigun followed behind the general manager. And as he passed by his brother Mok Wipyong, he said in a whisper.
"Don't draw your sword unless you're going to cut. You'll die if you do that."
After saying that, he slowly walked behind the general manager.
Mok Wipyong glared at his brother's back with wide eyes. His expression was one of disbelief, as if he couldn't believe what he had just heard.
Although he was glaring at his brother's back with a fierce face, the tips of his fingers were trembling slightly.
