Chapter 10 : Meteorite

“Actually, an hour ago I was a man, and now I’m a woman… Would you believe that?”

Wrapped in a blanket since my old clothes were too dirty and I had no suitable replacements, I said calmly.

“I’d sooner believe you were a girl disguised as a boy. Who takes a medicinal bath and changes gender without their face changing at all?”

“Hmph, the truth is right before you, yet you deny it due to your narrow perspective. Pathetic coward,” I glared at him from under the blanket.

“So when are you leaving? Are you planning to spend the night with a naked girl? Tomorrow, I’ll tell Master and Madam Su you’re a thrice-failed scholar and a degenerate beast in gentleman’s clothing…”

“You’re unbeatable,” Su Wantian’s mouth twitched.

I’m starting to believe you now.

How else could a girl develop such a mouth… I stayed to ask if you wanted dinner.

Having never known “three meals a day,” I jumped up instantly:

“Eat, eat, eat!”

Cover yourself, damn it!

Su Wantian yanked the flapping blanket, pinning me back to the bed before I exposed myself.

“Someone will bring clothes soon. Follow the maid out… Sigh, why aren’t you Immortal Lady Yun?”

I realized I shouldn’t be too rowdy in my current state:

“I wish I were her too… By the way, do you have a dog? I haven’t seen Big Yellow in days. I miss it, I want to pet its head.”

“I don’t think our dog should be around you,” Su Wantian sighed.

“You’d corrupt it.”

“No problem.”

I spoke quickly, then, lightning-fast, stretched out a pale arm, ruffled Su Wantian’s hair, and dove back under the blanket:

“Now I’m satisfied.”

Su Wantian froze, then froze again, his face reddening.

“Xun Qiu!”

“Why so loud?”

Safely back under the blanket, I was fearless.

“Hurry up and get dinner ready, dinner!”

Though furious, as a self-proclaimed degenerate scholar, Su Wantian couldn’t rip off the blanket and drag me out to beat me.

Grumbling, he stormed out to check if the cook was still awake.

Dinner had been served an hour ago, so he’d need to arrange something new.

As Su Wantian walked, he heard a strange sound.

Looking up, he saw a dazzling star streak across the sky, then.

It crashed heavily into the distant mountains!

Boom—

The deafening sound startled the entire city.

Su Wantian gaped, shocked by the sight.

He considered going to investigate but quickly dismissed the impractical idea, focusing on the real priority—the noise was so loud, even a sleeping cook would be awake now!

Perfect, I’ll tell him it’s morning and to make food!

A quarter-hour later, I, now in simple green clothes, met my dinner and a grim-faced cook.

We ate not in the Su residence’s dining hall but at a small table in the kitchen.

It felt sneaky and a bit disrespectful, but I didn’t care.

I’d rummaged through slop buckets before; the Su kitchen was a palace by comparison.

Su Wantian, holding a book, read by the kitchen’s oil lamp and asked casually:

“So, are you still going to that brothel?”

Mouth full of chicken, I swallowed:

“Go, why wouldn’t I?”

“For real?”

Su Wantian was stunned.

“You’re a girl now, and you’re going to a brothel? You got that ability?”

“Hmph! Can’t I just listen to music and appreciate the arts of mortal women—zither, chess, calligraphy, painting?”

“I doubt you have that level of taste,” Su Wantian sighed.

“If you really want to appreciate the arts, you’d be better off visiting my father’s study. He can’t read much, but he’s bought plenty of literary treasures.”

I wiped my mouth with my sleeve, saying seriously:

“That’s still better than a certain thrice-failed…”

Su Wantian pressed a hand menacingly on the table:

“This little table flips easily. Cleaning up would be a hassle, but… Xun Qiu, you don’t want to miss dinner, do you?”

I almost snapped, “I’d eat it off the floor,” but thought better of it.

With a rich guy like Su Wantian backing me, I didn’t need to lower myself, so I caved.

“Dad, I was wrong.”

“That’s more like it,” Su Wantian lifted his hand, returning to his book.

“No one’s stealing your food. Eating too fast is bad for your stomach. You’re a girl now—be a bit refined, or you won’t marry.”

“You think you’re my dad just because I called you that?”

I kicked him under the table.

“That’s interesting… By the way, it’s noisy outside. Isn’t it midnight? Why so many people? Because of that noise earlier?”

Su Wantian turned a page:

“A meteorite fell. Big commotion. Some busybodies or dreamers hoping to strike it rich are probably heading to the mountains tonight… Nothing to do with us.”

Hearing this, my curiosity faded.

I slowed down a bit but still finished dinner quickly.

Afterward, Su Wantian escorted me back to my room before returning to his own.

“Why do I feel like I’m actually her dad…”

The next morning.

Su Wantian figured I’d sleep late, so he didn’t come by early.

But not long after waking, I had a servant lead me to him.

I’d changed into a white robe, my ash-white hair tied up.

At a glance, I looked like some noble young master, but with a bit of attention, my refined features revealed my true gender.

“What’s with this outfit?”

I said proudly:

“Only men visit brothels, so I’ve got to be a man!”

“You… Whatever,” Su Wantian sighed.

Anyone who couldn’t tell you’re a girl in disguise doesn’t deserve eyes.

If they still can’t tell after you speak, they might as well give up their ears.

Wait, doesn’t that mean the day before yesterday.

I… No, she was filthy then, in rough clothes, and I was too busy fleeing the beast to notice details.

Su Wantian quickly convinced himself.

“By the way, did a maid dress you? Do we have someone that is skilled?”

“Your mom.”

Su Wantian froze:

“My mom…?”

“Yeah, I ran into Madam Su this morning. For some reason, she was super friendly, asking me all sorts of questions. When I said I was going out with you today, she offered to help me get ready, and I agreed,” I recalled.

“These clothes are hers too…”

“They were mine.”

“Oh, let me borrow them. You’re not that stingy.”

“You don’t get what this means”.

Su Wantian’s face darkened, realizing Madam Su probably misunderstood, thinking I had some special relationship with him.

Sure, she’s good-looking—no man wouldn’t like her.

Humans don’t pair with monkeys, dogs, or other human-like creatures.
