The Weapon Genius: Anything I Hold Can Kill

Chapter 205: Sanctuary’s Edge

Chapter 205: Sanctuary’s Edge

The night air was cool and quiet as Jin led Yujin, Joon, Hanuel, Areum, Jisoo, Echo, and Seul toward the school grounds, the familiar walls emerging through the darkness. Trees burst through cracked pavement, vines weaving over shattered buildings, a living forest swallowing the city’s ruins. The school, their sanctuary, stood nestled in this urban wilderness, its silhouette a promise of rest after a grueling day training at Ryu’s police station base. Securing Ryu as an ally for the crown quest had eased a quiet doubt in Jin’s chest—Ryu’s loyalty was solid, but confirming it felt like a victory. Still, the system’s new bounty feature gnawed at him, a reminder that danger lurked in every shadow. The whisper of leaves in the breeze was their only companion, but the silence held a razor’s edge, sharpened by the chaos they’d survived.

Jin inhaled deeply, the crisp air grounding him. The school’s proximity was a fleeting comfort, a glimpse of normalcy in a world turned feral. Then a deafening boom shattered the calm.

The ground quaked, a surge of force tearing through the air. Dust and debris exploded upward, the shockwave shoving Jin and the others back, their feet skidding on the dirt path. A second boom followed, metal and stone shrieking as a building on the school’s edge—a weathered storage structure—collapsed. Walls splintered, hurling jagged chunks of concrete, rebar, and wood toward them in a deadly cascade.

"Aesteros!" Yujin shouted, her voice sharp with urgency, eyes tracking the falling rubble.

Jin’s instincts flared, his hand summoning Muramasa from his inventory. The black katana materialized with a low hum, its blade glinting with ethereal light. He crouched, muscles coiling, and launched upward, the Crescent Void Slash technique igniting. His body spun mid-air, Muramasa tracing arcs of shimmering energy that sliced through the debris like a storm. Concrete shattered into dust, rebar split cleanly, wood disintegrated—each piece met his blade and vanished before it could touch the group below. Jin’s movements were a blur, precise and relentless, his skill guiding every strike to carve a safe zone in the chaos. He landed lightly, Muramasa still raised, eyes locked on the massive form crashing through the wreckage.

Aesteros hit the ground with a thunderous impact, cratering the earth. Dust billowed, obscuring him, but as it cleared, he rose, unscathed. His rocky skin gleamed under the moonlight, eyes like molten lava glowing in a rugged, human-like face. He shifted, his massive form shrinking into a smaller, humanoid shape, smooth stone and earth blending seamlessly. Stepping forward, his voice rumbled with warmth, no smile touching his stoic face. "You’re back. Good to see you all."

Echo snorted, brushing dust from his jacket, his voice glitching faintly. "Nice welcome. You trying to drop a building on us or what?" His tone was sharp, but a smirk tugged at his lips, betraying his exhaustion.

Jin sheathed Muramasa, its hum fading, and shot Echo a glance. "He’s got a point. What’s with the demolition, Aesteros?"

A rustle of leaves interrupted, the air growing fresh and green. The Forest Spirit emerged, her form a fluid weave of vines and shimmering leaves, moving with otherworldly grace. Her eyes glowed verdant, her presence calming yet electric. She smirked, playful but edged with frost. "Aesteros got carried away, as usual." Her gaze flicked to him, her smile teasing. "These old buildings can’t handle your... enthusiasm."

Aesteros grunted, brushing rubble from his shoulders, his expression unchanging. "The structure was brittle. I didn’t hit it that hard." His tone was calm, but a defensive edge crept in, his lava-like eyes narrowing slightly.

The Forest Spirit’s smile widened, vines swaying as she stepped closer. "Oh, please. You swung first, and I merely answered. Be more mindful, or you’ll bury the school next." Her voice carried a mocking lilt, but her eyes held a warmth that softened the jab.

Yujin raised an eyebrow, catching Jin’s eye with a faint grin. The spirits’ banter was a familiar dance—her playfulness clashing with his stoicism, their partnership forged through relentless training. Jin stepped forward, voice firm. "What happened here, Aesteros?"

Aesteros met his gaze, his humanoid form settling. "Training with her," he said, nodding toward the Forest Spirit. "We push each other to get stronger. I thought I’d go light tonight, but she turned it up." He shot her a glance, his face stern but tolerant.

The Forest Spirit huffed, crossing her arms, vines rustling, her smirk lingering. "You escalated first. I just matched you." Her glowing eyes held a challenge, but her tone softened. "We’re preparing, Jin. You know why."

Jin frowned, glancing at the ruined building, its debris strewn across the path. "Training this close to the school’s reckless," he said, voice steady but sharp. "This is our sanctuary. The others need rest, and we can’t afford to draw attention—not with the system’s new trick." The bounty app flashed in his mind—his face, his location, broadcast to desperate survivors like a lure.

Aesteros’ rocky face hardened, a flicker of regret in his gaze. "You’re right. We’ll move training further out. Didn’t mean to shake up your home."

The Forest Spirit nodded, her vines swaying gently, her smile fading to a serious expression. "We’ll be careful. But the world’s shifting, Jin. Threats are coming—bigger than before. We train to protect this place, and you." Her voice was almost tender, her eyes locked on his.

Jin’s jaw tightened, the weight of their words sinking in. "I know. We got Ryu on our side today, but the system’s bounties... they’re turning people against each other. It’s a trap to keep us fighting." He glanced at the group—Joon scrolling his interface, Hanuel and Areum murmuring, Yujin, Jisoo, Echo, and Seul moving toward the school, their faces etched with fatigue. The urban forest around them—trees piercing concrete, vines draping rusted cars—mirrored their base, a sanctuary woven into nature’s grip.

Echo, still dusting off his jacket, muttered, "If you’re gonna train, do it somewhere that doesn’t drop a roof on us. I’d like to sleep sometime this century."

Aesteros’ eyes narrowed, but he nodded, stoic. "Fair. We’ll keep the school safe, Echo. You have my word."

The Forest Spirit’s eyes glinted, a faint smile returning. "You’ve brought your team far, Jin. But don’t rest too long. The storm’s close, and it won’t wait." Her form shimmered, vines curling inward.

Jin exhaled, a spark of gratitude easing the tension in his chest. "We’ll talk more later," he said, turning to the spirits. "The others need rest, and I need to plan our next move."

Aesteros clapped a stone hand on Jin’s shoulder, the weight grounding, his face unyielding. "You’ve got us. We’ll fight with you, no matter what comes."

The Forest Spirit smiled softly, her form fading slightly. "Rest, Jin. But stay sharp. We’ll be ready."

Jin nodded, starting toward the school. "Keep this place safe," he called, his voice firm. The urban forest closed around him, trees rising through shattered buildings, their branches whispering in the night. The school loomed ahead, its walls a fragile promise of refuge. The system’s bounties, the coming threats, the weight of leadership—they pressed on him, but his resolve burned stronger. With his team, Aesteros, and the Forest Spirit, he had a chance. The real fight was coming, and they’d face it together, in the heart of their living forest home.
