Chapter 237 – New Identity
Chapter 237 – New Identity
“And now, ladies and… it’s just ladies, huh? Now, it’s time for what we’ve all been waiting for…” In one of the bedrooms of the hideout, Miyuki led a strange one-woman show for her captive audience. Me, Carol, and Bea. “It’s time to dress up Iroha! Clap clap clap!”
“Since when?!” I tried to protest, but the three of them were hovering around after making me sit in a chair. I’ve seen how this ends at the PSF. “How do we get here from ‘let’s act on our plans’ or whatever?”
Carol quietly glared at Miyuki. That’s right… She’s being stupid, isn’t she? Tell her! “*Sigh…* I’d usually chop you over the head and call you stupid, but making Iroha try new looks is always fun. You may proceed.”
Traitor!
“I’m not really sure what’s going on, but as Ebrilyon’s Princess, it’s an honor to have been invited to such a prestigious event, and it’s a pleasure to be here.” This one’s just in work more… Even gave a little formal bow at the end like this is an actual thing…
“Grrr… Fine, do whatever you want without consulting me. See if I care!” I pouted. “Miyuki, explain!” Am I getting a new catchphrase?
“Oops… Did I make you mad, Iroha?” Miyuki asked.
Sure did… Sigh… My girlfriends sure are troublesome… They really can’t keep their hands off me the second I come back. What a pain… Being this popular is a lot of work. Just what are they thinking?
“Nah… Look at her.” Carol said. “She’s smiling.” With her finger, she popped my pouting cheek.
“N- no, I’m not!”
“Hmm? Really?” Bea asked. “Having three girls you love fawning over you doesn’t make you happy? And here I thought everyone loved spending time with the people they love… How sad…”
Oh no… Now she’s frowning… Is this bait? It’s totally bait. But even then, I can’t bear to see her looking sad.
“I’m happy. I’m happy, okay?” It’s embarrassing how easy I’ve become… “I’ll admit that, but don’t get the wrong idea, okay? I don’t care about trying new styles or whatever you’re on about. I’m just happy to spend time with you. That’s all.” Hmph!
Carol tilted her head.
“Tsundere?”
“Hu- huh?” She’s grinning… They’re laughing… “N- no! Wh- why would you say that? That’s your thing. Were you worried I would steal it? No, no… I would never. Sorry for making you worry.” Handsome smile!
“That attitude’s really annoying… Let me punch you!” Carol stretched her arm.
“Stop it! I’m actually really against violence!” There’s an incredible meta joke involving a certain title that I’m not allowed to make here. “Are you really going to punch me and interrupt Miyuki’s explanation. She was just about to start, right?”
“Hmm? Sure, if that’s what you want. And that way you owe me one.” She winked. “You want to know why we’re gathered here and why we’re giving you a makeover, don’t you? Also, what that has to do with the plan from before.”
“Yeah… You move things along with the most random jumps that I’m completely lost.” I said.
“You won’t be lost for long, Iroha. We settled on you going off on your own to have your skill thing repaired. To do that, you have to meet with the original creator. To do that, you’ll have to infiltrate demon society in the other world and infiltrate the creator’s school. And to do that, you’ll need a disguise!”
“Are you sure? Didn’t you say I could make friends with Velvet? Wouldn’t a pair of fake horns do the trick?”
Even if a random demon were to suspect me, I could just punch them. No skills doesn’t mean no strength.
“It won’t work. Velvet still remembers you as the person who stole her precious creation. If you walk up to her with that face, she’ll attack you on sight. For you to make friends with her, you’ll need to make contact with Lythea first and have her introduce you. You need a good enough disguise to look for Lythea in their school and not draw any suspicion from Velvet. Even if she were to look at you directly.”
“Huh…” The future sure holds a lot of insight… Or is it foresight? “If you say so… But wasn’t Lythea going to work with the others and help them take down Thivadi? How am I going to meet with her in the Demon Territory if she’s going to be in the Human Territory?”
“That’s exactly why we have to do this now!” Miyuki jumped. “Listen, Iroha. You have a very small window to meet Lythea before she leaves for Human Territory. You need to get a disguise and go right away! That’s why you need to let us play- ahem… coordinate a new look before it’s too late.”
“I feel like you were about to say something weird…” Remember kids, creating a sense of urgency is a tactic commonly used by scams! Stay safe out there! “Fine… Do what you want. But how am I going to go to Demon Territory? It’s not that simple. It’s almost impossible for us to travel there right now.”
“There’s a portal here in the city nearby that will take you there.”
Straight-to-the-point, zero-tact Miyuki.
“A portal?” Carol asked. “That’s dangerous! Why didn’t you say anything?”
“It’s not a dangerous one. Don’t worry.”
“Oh…” Carol accepted just it… Too easily… Is it really that simple? Doesn’t that call the need for the House and the PSF’s existence into question?
“I wish I had more to say, but you got all your bases covered, huh?” Nothing more I can do to delay my fate. “So? Is this when I get humiliated for your amusement?”
“Yep! This is where you get humiliated for our amusement!” Miyuki said. “If we want to give you a complete makeover, our first stop should be your head…” She walked around the chair and gently brushed my hair with her hand.
“My head? Like makeup and a new hairstyle?”
“Those too, yes… But I was thinking something more substantial, Iroha… We’re going to give you a new head.” I don’t like the sound of that. “Carol, you’re up first.”
Carol blankly stared at her. “Uhh… No? You lost me at new head… I’m not really interested in getting rid of her current one.”
“Yo- you’re scary…” Miyuki shrunk. “You’re making it sound like I was asking you to behead her… Use your magic on her! You can change her looks with your illusions!”
“Oh… Yeah… I can do that.”
“Listen closely, this very important…” Miyuki lowered her voice and grabbed Carol hands guiding them forward. “First… I want you to place your hands on her shoulders… Get a good sense of where she is and get used to the felling of her skin…” Carol did as she asked. “Good… Now, get your magic flowing through your body and bring it as close to the edge as possible… As close to Iroha as possible… Keep a steady grip… Get a good feel for her… Now pump her full of your magic juice!”
“Pump who full of what?!?! What are you saying? That sounds too naugh- oh- hii! Ahhhn~!” What the hell? It’s kinda nice… Really warm… Like a very nice massage…
The naughty voice made Carol’s cheeks burn. “Wait… What am I…?” She stopped immediately and unleashed her rage. “Miyuki… Just what are you making me do?! You’re making me imagine…” She shook her head. “You’re making the mood weird! What was the point of that?” She lifted Miyuki by the collar.
“Ahahahaha… I was messing around a little, but it’s important! Think about it. Even if you use your illusions to change Iroha’s looks, they’re not going to last long, right? Iroha needs to be the one casting and maintaining the illusions.”
She’s right… “But then we can’t use illusions for the disguise, right?” I asked. “I can’t use my skills.”
“You can now.”
With a mysterious smile, she got Carol to let go.
Hmm… I grabbed a lock of my own hair and held it in front of me… I focused my magic and the tip turned red. No way… The illusions lasted until I was sure, then the red dispersed.
“It’s true! It really worked!”
“Wait, did I fix her?” Carol asked.
“You’re the best, Carol! Now I can use skills again!” I jumped up and went in for a hug.
“You’re not ‘fixed’ or anything yet…” Miyuki said. “The only thing that changed is that you can create illusions again. That skill is connected to Carol, so it was possible for her to get it working again with a little finesse.”
“Oh… It’s just illusions…” I let go of Carol. She’s right… I tried to activate Agility Burst, and nothing happened. The bond skill is the only thing that got fixed. “I’m surprised you knew she could fix it.”
“Hmpm!” Miyuki proudly stuck out her chest. “You can praise me more, Iroha!”
“I’m alright…” I returned to the chair. “The fact that you get to play dress-up with me is reward enough for you.” Let’s get this disguise business over with. “I’m ready to start. What should I change first?”
“This is where our other friend comes in!” Miyuki grabbed Bea’s shoulders and pushed her to the front. “What does a demon look like? We’re going to need your expertise here.”
“Is that the real reason behind my invitation?” Bea asked. “I’m not exactly an expert on demons, you know?”
“But you’ve seen a lot of them before, haven’t you?”
“I guess that’s true…” Hmm… Bea covered her mouth in thought. “Obviously, the most distinguishing feature is a set of horns. Demons don’t look that different from humans otherwise.”
“Like this?” I created a small pair of horns, around the length of a thumb, modeled after a bull’s.
“A little too simple… And too bright. Can you go for something more intricate?” Wait… This is actually hard.
“Don’t just stand there.” Miyuki tapped Carol’s shoulder. “Give her a hand. She can’t see what she’s doing.”
“Sure… Like this?” Carol used her power to alter my illusion.
“That’s better. Maybe a little bigger. Other than the horns, the other thing that sometimes gives them away is their eyes. Demons tend to have a certain fire in their eyes… But you already have that normally.” Do I? What do we do then?
“Change them.” Miyuki said. “We can’t have Iroha get recognized from her eyes. Let’s go from red to blue. A light blue.” Carol and I worked together to change the color of my eyes. “That’s it. Now for her hair… How does green sound?”
“Green…? I can see it… Like a mint green…” There was a cheerful tone in Carol’s voice. “It would look cute on her! Let’s go with that.” Thus, my hair changed color.
“And the hairstyle?” Miyuki asked.
“Let’s mix things up. The sidetail has to go.” Carol pulled my hair tie, and my hair fell straight down. “Instead of on the side, we do it in the back… A ponytail… Not a full ponytail, of course, but a bigger tail than the sidetail. About fifty-fifty tail and straight down.”
“Oh! She’s so cute!” Miyuki looked at Bea. “What do you think?”
“Looks good. Anyone would look at her and think she’s a demon right now.”
“Geez, I don’t care about that! Isn’t she cute?” Miyuki asked. What do you mean ‘you don’t care’?
“Of course! No matter what she looks like, Iroha’s always adorable! Because it’s her!”
“I’m with you.” Carol said. “Even if she looks like a different person, she’s still the best!”
“Our adorable, adorable, Iroha…” Miyuki rubbed my head.
“AaahhAaahhAaaahh… Stop! You’re just trying to make me blush now!”
