Chapter 226 – Sins and Salvation
Chapter 226 – Sins and Salvation
Almost done. Just a little more and they’d be able to put the plan to save Iroha into action.
“Hmm? Miyuki?” Carol muttered. Everyone was running to get everything done, but Miyuki was sitting on the couch munching on some chips. “Are you seriously doing nothing all day?”
“Ehhh…? What’s your problem? Can’t I do what I want?” Miyuki stared at the TV without turning to face Carol.
“Just pisses me off seeing you sit around like you’re royalty. Weren’t you helping Katja? Why aren’t you with her?”
“…” Miyuki put a chip in her mouth, barely moving at all. “Change of plans, Carol. When we save Iroha, you go underground and fight all the experimental machines there. Don’t ask me why, but it’s crucial to save Iroha. Came to me just now.”
“Huh? No… Forget I said anything. Enjoy your stay on our couch, queen. I have something to do.”
Carol ran out of there in an instant. “Fufu…” Victory is so sweet… Miyuki put another chip in her mouth.
Katja returned to the dorm just as Carol was leaving and almost tackled her. Her pink hair was tied into a ponytail, and she was dripping with sweat. She was wearing a white T-shirt with some running shorts.
“Oh… You’re back already…” Miyuki could spare a glance.
“*Pant… pant…* Yeah… It’s been three hours by now… I like to think I have stamina, but I don’t think I can run anymore.”
“It’s all part of your training. Don’t come complaining to me…” Miyuki said.
Katja couldn’t help but frown. Being told to push your body to the limit by someone lounging around on a couch stung… “I mean… I get what you’re doing. If I push my body to the limits, I’m going to get stronger, but that’s exactly the kind of thing I told you doesn’t work… Even after our conversation, I’m still a tool… Me and training are two things that don’t go well together.”
“No no… That’s all in your head. People improve whenever they do something, whether they want to or not.” After putting down the snacks, Miyuki sat to face Katja. She got more approachable, so Katja sat on the couch next to hers.
“That’s technically true, but those kinds of improvements won’t change a thing… It’s not gonna help me repay my debt and save Iroha…”
“Oh, but don’t you worry… I haven’t been working to the bone just because I like seeing you struggle.” But you do? “I have a plan. Uhmm… Sarasa!” Miyuki raised her voice and called into the hallway.
It took a second for the footsteps to get to the entrance from one of the rooms. “Nya? You called?”
“I sure did, mover number 2. Thanks for getting here so quickly.” Miyuki smirked.
“Don’t call me that! You used my name just fine just now, so don’t stop!” Sarasa said.
“*Sigh…* So demanding… But if you really insist, I guess I’ll consider it… If you do a favor for our good friend Katja first.”
“A favor?”
…
“Is this the place?” Katja asked. Grassy hills in every direction with plenty of bushes and sparsely spread trees. “What’s so special about this?” Nature? It was unusual for someone who lived in the city, but it was nothing extraordinary. Though, it was a lot more common in this world.
That was the favor Miyuki asked of Sarasa. Escorting Katja to a certain location in Balterra.
“I don’t get it either…” Sarasa shrugged. “The monsters here are nothing special… Barely stronger than the average animal… The only thing really is the annoying little… never mind… I’m supposed to keep my mouth shut, aren’t I?” Miyuki’s orders.
“Uhh… But this is the place. I guess the next step is to call her…” Katja pulled out her phone. “Miyuki? I think we’re at the right place, but there’s nothing here… What now?”
“You see any cute little rabbits yet? I want you to catch one and pet it.”
“Rabbits?” Katja focused. Every once in a while, one of the bushes would rustle. A rabbit would pop out for a moment and hop between covers. They were there… “Okay… I can do that…”
“Wa- wait…” Sarasa said. “Those aren’t rab-”
“Sarasa, shut up.”
So she did… Miyuki commanded a lot of respect. She was the only one who could help them rescue Iroha, and she was very knowledgeable. If she’s telling her to stay quiet, there must be a good reason for it.
“Just do as I tell you, Katja. I guarantee you it’s gonna work.” Miyuki said.
“O- Okay… Catch a rabbit and pet it… I got it…”
“Good. Sarasa, go with her and hold her phone for her.”
Katja handed Sarasa the phone and cracked her knuckles. Time to get to work. She caught rabbits before… How hard could it be to catch one now? Katja led the way, stepping into the bushes with Sarasa right behind as moral support. As she pushed through, a cute brown and black rabbit munched on some grass, completely unaware. That’s the one.
“Easy now…” Katja lurked closer. Should be in the bag now… The only thing that would stop her was if the rabbit were somehow supernaturally fast. But to a certain extent, she could still catch it… She prepared for the worst-case scenario and dived forward.
“…” It’s… fluffy? “I- I got it… I caught it…” The rabbit didn’t move at all… It was easy… She was worried for nothing. “Right… I need to pet it, don’t I?” The rabbit was small enough to fit inside her hands, so she could easily hold it with one. She held the critter up straight and reached for its head with her right hand.
*Chomp!*
With the insane speed that she imagined, the rabbit sank its teeth into her fingers.
“…?” That’s awfully aggressive… Did the rabbit actually do that? Or was she just seeing things? “Wh- what?! Why? Ouch! That actually really hurts! Let go!”
“Ahahahahaha! What are you doing, Katja? You’re in monster territory, remember? You can’t let your guard down.” Miyuki made fun of her from the comfort of the House’s couch. Really annoying.
“You didn’t tell me they’d attack!” Katja flailed her arm wildly. “Stop biting me, you creep! You’re gonna get hurt!”
“Uhmm… It’s not going to stop.” Sarasa said. “Those aren’t rabbits, they’re monsters… They’re strong enough to kill children… And to bite off your fingers if you don’t hurry and finish it off.”
“Huh?! This is a monster? This thing?” Dammit… Katja extended her sword with the press of a button and stabbed the creature trying to chew through her fingers. “Ahh… ahh… That hurt a lot more than I expected…” Katja massaged the spot that was bitten. “What’s the meaning of this, Miyuki?”
“Don’t ask questions. It’s all to help you reach your maximum potential. Now go try again. You still haven’t gotten the opportunity to pet those fluffy creatures yet! Doesn’t it just make you giddy thinking about them?” Miyuki was at a much higher pitch than usual.
No… And if that feeling ever existed, it was gone now.
Whatever. Katja quickly found another rabbit and sneaked up close without making a sound. Maybe they’re not all like that… Catching the rabbit was again no problem, but petting it made Katja’s hand hesitate. Would it really let her per it?
*Chomp!* *Stab!*
“Ouch…” Katja was left rubbing her hand again. She reacted as soon as she was bitten, but that meant tanking the full sting of the bite.
“Again! Do it again, Katja! You’re not coming back until you manage to pet one of them! Get to work!”
She went again. Miyuki was annoying, but so were the rabbits. She wasn’t even trying to hurt them… She wouldn’t have to kill them if they just let her pet them once. Why were they making it so hard for her? By the time she got to the fifth, it was starting to get old.
“Miyuki! Is this even possible? It’s like these monsters want to die… They’re so annoying…”
“Yeah… They let you get so close, they give you hope, and at the last second, they betray you. Just the worse… Enough to fill anyone’s heart with darkness… You know what, stab that one again. Just to make sure the pest is dead.”
Katja stabbed her sword into the dead body with more strength than she used to kill it. It was so deserved… Miyuki and her were finally on the same page.
“Yes! Take that! Now stomp its body! Make it pay for even daring to attack. Stomp it and laugh at him! That’s what you get! All that for a cheap shot? Now you’re dead! Dead! Ahahahahaha!” Miyuki said.
Katja raised her foot… “Wait… That’s going a bit too far… Stomping the body? I’d feel bad…”
“There’s no time to hesitate… It’s supposed to feel bad… Remember? That’s the pain that’s supposed to sharpen you. We finally found it. Now do it! Stomp it! Laugh! Enjoy!”
Katja braced herself and…
*Stomp!*
“Take that! And that! That’s for biting me! And biting me! And biting me! And for being stupid! I just! Wanted to get this done with! Why! You…! Aha… Ahahaha… Ahahahaha!”
“Ughh… I didn’t sign up for this…” Sarasa averted her eyes.
“Ahahahahaha! Yes, keep going!” Miyuki said.
By the time Katja was done, the monster was crushed into a pile of meat. Katja bent over while grabbing her belly. “Ughh… That was too far… I feel like I’m losing what little of my humanity I had left… I feel dirty.”
“It’s okay… Don’t worry…” Miyuki’s sweet whispers came to the rescue. “It’s okay to feel dirty… You’re supposed to get even dirtier. If you wish to serve Iroha, you must discard all your hesitation. Just remember, no matter how dirty you have to get, Iroha will always accept you. She’ll cleanse everything when she’s by your side. She’ll punish you and get rid of your sins. If you want salvation, then you must not hesitate to serve her…”
“Iroha will…? Really…?” Katja’s disgusted expression melted into a twisted smile. “Hehehehe… Of course… I get it now! Iroha will save us! Iroha will save me!”
“Fufufu… Looks like we’re done here…”
…
“Ah! Katja, Sarasa! You’re back!” Narumi was carrying a cardboard box to the pile by the entrance when the door flung open. “What were you doing?”
“Training. Probably…” Carol was carrying a box too and crossed her arms after placing it on top of Narumi’s.
“Yep, training. You got it, Carol. Good job!” Miyuki slid next to Katja like she was a project to be presented. “I had her go to the other world to try something out.”
“Ehhh… You’re training too, Katja? I thought you didn’t do that…” Narumi said.
Katja giggled with a cold, thin smile. “It seems like even someone like me can make some progress for a good cause… It was very productive…”
“Hmm… That’s nice. I always knew you had it in you.” Carol said. “Now how about you help carry some boxes? We have a lot of stuff to take to the hideout.”
Katja’s body jolted and she pulled out her sword. “Kukukukuh… You think you can tell me what to do? Only Iroha’s allowed to do that… If you touch what’s not yours, you might get hurt…” She stuck her tongue out and ran it along the blade while looking them in the eyes.
“Eeek! Gross! Creepy! What the hell?!” Narumi said.
What did you do…? Carol’s glare first landed on Miyuki, then to Katja. “Yeah, Katja, what the hell? Why are you saying that to us? Are we enemies or something?”
“No… Fufufu… I wish I’m never forced to turn my blade against you… But if it does happen, Iroha will forgive me anyway! Her punishment will rid me of any sin!”
“Only if we save her! What are you gonna do if you attack us? Save her on your own? Also, weren’t you training to become stronger? Why did you come back as a masochist? Miyuki?!”
“What can I say? You take the good with the bad…” Miyuki said.
“That’s not something that you can say just because. One thing needs to follow the other. Why does she have to become a masochist just to get stronger? It doesn’t make any sense!”
“Now, now… This is all to make Iroha, our girlfriend, happy. How can you be dissatisfied with that? Besides, Katja’s happy to have found a new purpose too, right?” Miyuki patted her head like she was a dog.
“I can finally see the light… I’ll kill anyone who gets in Iroha’s way!”
“Yeah yeah… You need to dial that back a little bit…”
“Even you, if you interfere with my new purpose… Kukukukukukuh…” Katja pointed her sword at Carol.
*Woosh!*
A knife flew past Katja’s eyes, stabbing into the wall between her and Miyuki. The one-eyed mistress of the dorm had recovered enough to return to her post in the kitchen. Her terrifying self was back in full force.
“Your enthusiasm is greatly appreciated, Katja, but there are some lines you shouldn’t cross no matter what. We’ll need to have a talk if you don’t understand.”
“…” With the press of a button, Katja’s sword returned to its compact form. “M- my apologies… I’ll be more careful in the future…”
Carol shrugged. “Huh… That did the trick.”
