Chapter 248: Aftermath [2]
Chapter 248: Aftermath [2]
The headquarters of Syma Alchemists’ in the Veltran Empire’s capital city was filled with people despite the damages that it had sustained.
Authorities could be seen everywhere, taking reports from the victims as well as the witnesses.
Even the Veltran Royal Troops were present at the scene, making sure that the peace was maintained... or to say the illusion of peace was maintained.
The staff from the guild had already begun their daily duties, as the injured were sent on leave, while the rest quickly got back to work.
Then there were the people from various news agencies, trying their best to make sure that the people across the world received factual information about the recent events as well as their aftermath.
"What I am currently reading is an official declaration from the Syma Alchemists’ and the Syma Royal Bank. It states that all the people who had been injured and the families of the people who have lost their lives in the tragedy would be compensated for the loss that they had suffered while trying to avail themselves of the services provided by Syma..."
"We have one of the top officials of Syma here with us. Sir, what do you think of this attack, and wouldn’t providing compensation to everyone put pressure on the already fragile state of your guild?"
The interviewer asked the questions to the man who was supposed to be one of the highest-ranking officials of Syma.
"The money that would be required to compensate everyone would surely be massive, but I feel that it is something that we must do. The people had visited our guild as well as the bank, having complete faith in our services. For them to suffer such losses on the grounds of our businesses... compensating them is the least we can do."
There was a huge round of applause from the side lines as the people standing by cheered for the guild.
Just as the interviewer was about to ask the next question, the official from Syma cleared his throat, hinting that he wished to speak more.
"We would not only be compensating the people who have suffered losses in our areas of business, but also those who have lost their friends or families in the guilds owned by our allied businesses. Those businesses had agreed to participate in our charity campaign, which was meant for the welfare of the public... so it was due to us that they have suffered such losses. We would also help those businesses themselves recover from this tragedy by providing sufficient funds to rebuild their infrastructure."
The man paused as he swept his gaze across the crowd that had now formed upon hearing his words.
"We at Syma will do our best to ensure the welfare of the public no matter what obstacles we would have to face. Our charity campaign was meant in good faith, but it’s clear that some people may not have liked it, as our businesses were targeted due to that very fact. I hereby declare that Syma will stand tall and continue its campaign even after all the losses. So please rest assured."
Silence.
The statement made people unable to react.
Compensating for their own customers was a different thing, helping their allied businesses was another thing...
Though both of them were godly promises... they could still be considered within the definition of damage control.
But this...
Everyone had thought that due to the recent losses, Syma would stop its charity campaign, as just being able to run the guild after such losses was a difficult thing, so keeping a charity campaign active would surely bankrupt the business.
Maybe...
All of them had once again underestimated Syma and its leadership.
"Sir, if I may ask, you said that some people may not have liked your campaign and everything else that you had been doing over the last two years. So does that mean you have your suspicions about anyone? Who do you think might be behind this attack?"
The question made the entire crowd silent once again.
This was a question that had been on the minds of everyone across the entire world.
Why would someone target Syma?
The answer was clear.
Its charity campaign had resulted in the loss of public trust for many of the top businesses in the world, who had dominated the market for centuries or even longer.
So who was the actual mastermind behind the attacks?
People weren’t foolish.
Anyone with a decent brain could instantly connect the dots... but assuming something, having suspicions about someone, and actually knowing the truth were separate things.
Many were suspecting the top alchemy guilds and the top banks in the financial sector of having collaborated to eliminate Syma and destroy its foundation.
But—
Due to a lack of proof, people couldn’t really point their fingers at anyone, especially without having anything to gain from it.
After all, all living beings were selfish creatures.
They had to have some benefit in order to do something.
And Syma... maybe their declaration had now provided people with a reason to fight for the guild.
If the charity campaign continued, then many among the masses would still be able to avail themselves of the basic potions from the guild.
Deaths due to lack of treatment could easily be avoided, and the cultivators could take more risks in their path to power, knowing that they would have the capability to buy enough potions from one of the best... possibly the best guild in the world.
The official from the guild didn’t reply immediately.
He just swept his gaze across the crowd, making eye contact with each one of them... or at least that was how it felt to the people in the crowd.
He then turned to look at the interviewer and gave a bitter smile.
"You know the answer. All of you do."
Those were the final words from the official as he left the scene.
The interviewer as well as the crowd were left standing there, thinking about his words.
Maybe... they really did know the answer.
The only difference was, who would be the first one to answer the question?
Would the authorities take any action?
Could judgment be passed down to the culprits, even if they were the ones in power?
The questions were many...
As for the answers?
Only time would tell.
