Chapter 428 - 430: I’ll Be a Little More Restrained

"Daddy, you can’t make Mommy mad!" Ian turned his head away in a huff. "If Daddy makes Mommy mad, then a good daddy becomes a bad daddy, and Ian doesn’t want a bad daddy!"

Ethan Shaw’s voice was tinged with guilt. "I’m sorry, Ian. It’s all Daddy’s fault. It will never happen again. You can help Mommy keep an eye on me, okay?"

Ian turned back, a smile finally gracing his face, revealing the distinct dimples on his cheeks. "It’s a promise! Daddy can’t lie to Ian!"

Ian then peered behind the door, asking with confusion, "Where’s Mommy? Where is she?"

"Um... Mommy’s a little tired. How about I bring the breakfast in to her?"

"Can Ian go in and see Mommy? Ian can give her a back rub."

Ethan Shaw shook his head. "She’s already asleep. She probably doesn’t want to be disturbed. How about you come see Mommy later?"

Ian nodded reluctantly. "Okay, Daddy. You have to take good care of Mommy."

When Naomi Kenway saw Ethan Shaw walk in with the tray, her expression softened. "Is that breakfast from Ian? My son really knows how to look after his mother more and more. He’s such a good boy."

Ethan Shaw said, "Let me cover up these hickeys first, and then you can eat, okay?"

Naomi Kenway nodded.

As he was applying the makeup, Naomi Kenway sensed something was off with him. Before he could get any ideas, she took the concealer from his hand. "I’ll do it myself. I can reach my own neck."

Ethan Shaw couldn’t help but laugh. "Are you really that on guard against me?"

"I have to go out soon. When I get back..." Naomi Kenway trailed off and coughed, unable to finish the sentence, her cheeks flushing red.

Ethan Shaw smiled and took her hand. "I heard you. Tonight... I’ll be a little more restrained."

Jackson Kensington had been wearing a pained expression lately. His beloved daughter had gone on a hunger strike several times, claiming her reputation in the entertainment industry was ruined and she could never recover...

A knock echoed, followed by the butler’s anxious voice. "This is terrible! Sir, the young miss has fainted!"

Hearing such dreadful news, Jackson Kensington felt his head swim and nearly collapsed himself. He scrambled up to the fourth floor.

Jeanette Kensington’s room was decorated like a fantasy land. Every single ornament inside was priceless. Jackson Kensington had poured all his love into this daughter, even borrowing money during his most difficult times to maintain her lavish lifestyle.

Inside the room, Lorraine Warren was kneeling by Jeanette Kensington’s bed, sobbing uncontrollably. "My daughter, my poor daughter, don’t leave your mother. If you go, how am I supposed to live? Please don’t do anything foolish, okay? Jeanette, oh, my Jeanette, why must my daughter suffer so much?! Oh, heavens, if there’s any retribution to be paid, let it fall on me! Spare my poor child!"

Caleb Bishop stood beside Jeanette Kensington’s bed as well. His expression wasn’t as grief-stricken as Lorraine Warren’s. He pursed his lips and said, "Ma’am, please take care of yourself."

Lorraine Warren just kept weeping.

Jackson Kensington stumbled into the room. He gazed at Jeanette Kensington lying on the bed, her face pale, and his heart felt as if it were being carved out. Tears streamed down his face. "Jeanette, my daughter, what’s happened to you..."

As if she’d found her anchor, Lorraine Warren threw herself into Jackson Kensington’s arms. "Jackson, Dr. Lewis said Jeanette fainted from malnutrition. She’s been on a hunger strike, and she won’t eat no matter who tries to persuade her. She’s still so young! What will happen if this goes on? It’s all my fault, all my fault..."

Lorraine Warren slapped herself twice across the face, wailing, "It’s my wretched fate that’s harmed Jeanette! I was the other woman who broke up a family, but what does that have to do with my child? My daughter is so talented, a natural at singing and dancing, and just because of me, she’s been nailed to a pillar of shame! I deserve to die! I really deserve to die!!"

"Ma’am, please calm down," Caleb Bishop said.

Jackson Kensington’s expression was complicated as he tightly gripped Lorraine Warren’s hand. "Don’t be like this..."

Lorraine Warren was still a woman of considerable charm, and her tear-streaked face was a picture of heartbreaking beauty. She collapsed into Jackson Kensington’s arms. "Jackson, the one thing I’ll never regret in this life is meeting you. We were childhood sweethearts. I thought you would forget me after you came to Veridia, but who would have thought you’d keep me in your heart all this time. I know you’re a man of deep feeling and loyalty. To have earned your love... I must have been blessed in three lifetimes..."

Jackson Kensington closed his eyes, a tear rolling down his cheek.

’This was the one thing about Lorraine Warren he could never let go. After marrying Rose Kenway, I tried to settle down and build a life with her, but Rose had a domineering personality. She wasn’t gentle or delicate in the slightest, and our lives were full of friction. I worked day and night to bring in business, but all anyone ever saw was the Kenway Family’s live-in son-in-law. No one remembered that my name was Jackson Kensington.’

’But Lorraine was the complete opposite. She would always cling to me like a delicate bird, whispering words of admiration. It gave me an inexplicable sense of accomplishment, and all the frustration I felt with Rose seemed to vanish...’

’Slowly, I began to realize that Lorraine and I were the ones who were truly a match made in heaven.’

’And I was proven right. Lorraine was a demure woman who loved to be by my side, who saw me as her entire world, and who went along with my every wish. I found myself needing her more and more...’

"I know my sins are worthy of death! So let me trade my worthless life for my daughter’s!"

As she spoke, Lorraine Warren threw herself toward the wall.

At that exact moment, Jeanette Kensington’s eyes flew open, and she let out a terrified cry, "Mother..."

Jackson Kensington was scared witless. He belatedly scrambled over and pulled Lorraine Warren into his arms. "Lorraine!!"

A bloody gash appeared on Lorraine Warren’s forehead, the blood trickling down her cheek to her chin.

Dr. Lewis rushed over and quickly bandaged Lorraine Warren’s wound.

"Thankfully, the wound isn’t deep. Remember not to get it wet, and it would be best for her to rest quietly for a couple of days."

Jackson Kensington nodded profusely.

Lorraine Warren opened her eyes, her lips pale. "Jackson..."

"Lorraine!"

Jackson Kensington gripped her hand. "Why would you do that..."

"How is Jeanette?"

"Jeanette just woke up. Caleb is looking after her now. She was clamoring to see you, but I didn’t let her."

Lorraine Warren nodded. "She needs to rest..." Fresh tears began to fall, soaking the pillow. "Why didn’t I die? How can I bear to watch Jeanette on this hunger strike day after day! And it’s not just her. Whenever I go out, people call me a homewrecker. But we were the ones in love. If you’re talking about who came first, Rose Kenway was the one who interfered."

She let out a bitter laugh. "Jackson, I don’t blame you. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. It’s just a shame that this is the Kenway Family’s business, and we’re living in a Kenway Family house. We have no choice but to bow our heads! If only this was our family’s... After all your hard work over the years, shouldn’t this company bear the Kensington name...?"

Jackson Kensington’s eyes trembled. As if he had made up his mind, he declared, "Don’t either of you do anything foolish again. Tomorrow, I will have the Kenway Family name changed!"
