Chapter 881: Nathalie, Probably No One Will Come
Without waiting for the person on the other end to ask, she glanced at the time and slowly, with downcast eyes, said, "It’ll probably take half an hour to get to the restaurant."
She had gotten off the airplane at ten-thirty and left the terminal at ten-forty, so she would most likely arrive at about eleven-ten. If there was a traffic jam, she might be delayed until eleven-thirty.
Lunch was scheduled for noon, and she would definitely get there ahead of time.
Nathalie Quinlan initially thought that Leonardy Zachmann was calling to urge her to come over earlier, but the man on the other side of the phone fell silent for a long while. His deep voice conveyed a hint of guilt as he awkwardly said, "No rush, take your time coming over, and be safe on the road."
Nathalie raised an eyebrow, her expression somewhat surprised.
"Nathalie."
Leonardy Zachmann called out to her again on the phone.
Nathalie’s hand rested on the car window, her eyes half-closed, her demeanor lazy and casual, she hummed in acknowledgment, responding quickly, "What happened?"
"I..." Leonardy Zachmann seemed to find it difficult to speak, not knowing how to explain it to her, but he couldn’t keep it from her since Nathalie was almost there. He took a deep breath, his tone awkward and low, "Well... today’s graduation banquet might not have many people, just our family and a few friends gathering."
The hand Nathalie had on the car window paused for a second, and the corners of her eyes lifted slightly, her gaze devilishly mischievous.
She wasn’t really concerned about how many people were there for lunch, but from the way Mr. Zachmann had spoken to her on the phone earlier, the Zachmann family had initially planned a grand event. Something must have gone ’awry’ in the middle, resulting in few people willing to come.
"Sorry, I and your grandfather originally wanted to invite more people to liven things up, but when I called, many had other commitments today..."
Nathalie snapped back to reality, adjusted the rim of her hat, her demeanor indifferent, clearly not taking it to heart, "It’s fine, it’s just a casual family meal, fewer people might make it more comfortable."
Leonardy Zachmann seemed unsure of what to say and only after a considerable pause did he say, "Let me know when you arrive, I’ll come out to meet you."
"Alright."
Nathalie was succinct. After he hung up the phone, she slowly put down the phone, squinting her eyes, leaning back relaxed in her seat, seeming to ponder something, her mind elsewhere.
Amadeus Yancey was sitting next to her, observing her thoughtful expression after the phone call. He turned his head, pulling at her fingers, asking her, "What’s wrong?"
Nathalie’s fingertips were pinched by him again, quite speechless to find he seemed to enjoy playing with her fingers. She withdrew her hand, holding the phone, flipping through the phonebook while saying, "Nothing much, my uncle just called to tell me there’s no rush to get there; not many people are there for lunch. I’m thinking of calling a few friends to come over."
"No one’s coming over for lunch?" Amadeus Yancey leaned back, his striking face showing surprise, seemingly not expecting this situation.
He and Nathalie were on the same page—Mr. Zachmann clearly intended to use the graduation banquet as an opportunity to introduce Nathalie to the people of Beijing, so it made no sense for there to be few people attending the banquet; that would render the gathering pointless...
He turned his head, observing her nonchalant profile. The brim of her hat covered her overly delicate face, revealing only her sharply contoured chin, she was busy with her phone, her exceptional air giving off an unavoidable presence even when reined in.
He seemed to realize something, suddenly chuckled, and quickly understood the predicament the Zachmann family was facing.
