Chapter 458: Could It Be Diamonds?_1

Chapter 458: Could It Be Diamonds?_1

Candice Yancey was thinking of Mr. Wilmar with weary concern. She pursed her lips and added, "Yonathan Wilmar just called to ask if I’m acquainted with any international neurosurgeons and wanted an introduction. Though I know a few experts in neurosurgery, no doctor would dare perform craniotomy on Mr. Wilmar at his age; he’s nearly eighty and only holding on for another couple of years."

"What if something goes wrong and he dies on the operating table? Who would dare to take that risk? Sigh." Candice lamented, her face the picture of helplessness, "That’s why I didn’t make any introductions. Right now, the Wilmar family is a mess, constantly in turmoil. I’d rather not get involved to avoid good intentions leading to trouble."

After thinking for a bit more, she continued, "This time it’s Ivy Wilmar and her daughter from Room Two making the most fuss, and the Sullivan Family has also gotten involved. They’re busy searching for a doctor—like they have good intentions! They’re just waiting for Mr. Wilmar to pass, hoping to seize any advantage from the chaos within the family. Yonathan must be desperate to have thought of calling me, but it’s a pity I can’t be of help."

Beijing isn’t all that big, with the top circle breathing the same air, where everyone runs into each other. When Amadeus Yancey heard her mentioning Mr. Wilmar, he thought of the old man who had taken him to Penny Parkway to play when he was a child. His thin lips pressed into a firm line while he held his tea, keeping silent.

But deep down, he sighed.

"Isn’t there an Adelle Wafford in domestic neurosurgery?"

Candice was silent for a few seconds, her eyes filled with resignation, "Yeah, there’s an Adelle Wafford. But she’s not foolish either. She wouldn’t dare to take on Mr. Wilmar’s case for fear of damaging her own reputation."

Feeling moved by the topic, she talked desolately, "Not everyone sees saving lives as their duty. Many are more concerned about their reputation—they won’t try operations they’re unsure of. Just like when Edric was ill, how many doctors did we consult? Could none of them have helped? Actually, many were simply afraid to risk trying something on Edric, fearing failure might affect them, and also worried about our family seeking revenge."

In reality, watching her child walk with a limp every day, too self-conscious to go out, she’d be eternally grateful to any doctor willing to attempt treatment for Edric. Where would she have had the mind for revenge? The worst-case scenario was just another issue with a leg, and Edric was hardly any different from being disabled at that point.

Fortunately, later on, Amadeus took him to McKinney and met Nathalie Quinlan. Thinking of this, Candice’s mood lightened considerably. She took a velvet box out of her bag and placed it on the table, saying with a beaming smile, "Nathalie did so well on her test this time; I specially bought her a gift."

Alfred Garland, curious, craned his neck at the sight of the small box she presented, asking, "Young lady, what did you buy? With that size, it can’t be diamonds, can it?"

"I’m not that tasteless!" Candice clicked her tongue and added, "I did think about getting her a necklace or bracelet at first, but then I decided against it. She doesn’t like wearing those things; buying them would just be a waste."

She had another reason for not gifting jewelry—considering its value, she was worried Nathalie might refuse to accept it.

Candice was very pleased with herself for the gift she’d chosen, smiling as she said, "I put a lot of thought into this present. It seems ordinary, but it suits her perfectly."

Her confident tone made Alfred Garland itch with curiosity to find out what it was, his eyes almost fixed on the brocade box, unable to wait for her to open it and reveal the mystery, "Miss, what exactly did you buy?"

Amadeus Yancey also glanced over, his gaze shifting subtly as he stirred his tea, "What did you buy?"
