Vol 2 Chapter 37: Deceased Army Formation
World Marker Number Two.
The soul entity formed by the fusion of the Undying Monarch and the shipborne divine mechanism sensed the deathly stillness of this world.
They had arrived one step too late - the civilization of this small world had already been completely slaughtered by the Heavenly Demon's minions, but compared to the Xuanwu Imperial Dynasty's world, this one carried a familiar feeling.
Had the celestial anomalies caused by the Divine Martial Emperor affected this place as well?
In the past, soul entities couldn't exist for long periods and required various methods to sustain themselves. Ordinary people's souls would dissipate shortly after death. But after the Divine Martial Emperor's era, soul entities could exist independently from their bodies and could even continue cultivating.
And he happened to be the one most skilled at summoning deceased souls among everyone.
The medium patrol warship transformed into spectral form slowly descended toward the earth. The Undying Monarch could hear the wails and despair of the deceased - their cries of not wanting to die were so piercing they actually stung his heart.
The final emperor of the Ancestral Spirit Dynasty had been iron-blooded to the point of near madness, and successive emperors also possessed the cold-bloodedness befitting emperors. They were all people who could massacre civilians without hesitation, using death to forge their power.
This was partly due to the guidance of the Great Matrix of Universal Kindness and Spiritual Tracing, and also because he had become one of the people rather than an emperor high above the masses. And learning from the Divine Martial Emperor, becoming living monuments of civilization, the final resting place for countless deceased.
He sincerely thanked the Divine Martial Emperor for striking down twice that version of himself who had been preparing to desecrate ancestral graves, allowing him to walk a completely different path.
To listen, to understand, to join them, to guide that resentment.
"I don't want to die, someone please save me."
"Damn monsters, die! Die! Die!"
"Run quickly, I can't hold much longer."
"Little Wen, where are you?"
"We overestimated ourselves, our strength simply isn't enough. I hope the Imperial Dynasty discovers the anomaly soon."
"Hold fast! Nobody is allowed to retreat! Our homes are right behind us."
The Heavenly Demon minions stopped. They ceased devouring the earth and traces left by this world's beings, instead cautiously searching for the source of those voices.
They found flames.
Inky green flames burned within their digestive organs, at locations where corpses had been crushed, upon those bodies they had deliberately arranged in twisted poses - burning brighter and fiercer.
They saw things that should have been killed, consumed, utterly destroyed by them continuously emerging.
Some Heavenly Demon minions even saw themselves.
Those recently corrupted stared bewildered at faces in the flames that resembled their former selves yet carried completely different anger.
Corrupted Heavenly Demon minions differed completely in both mind and body - could they still be considered continuations of their former selves? The Undying Monarch thought not.
Could soul entities awakened by residual traces after burning away corruption, fueled by pre-death resentment and civilizational collapse, be considered continuations of the deceased? The Undying Monarch believed they were.
So return.
I will lead you to vengeance, I will bear your anger, I will become your continuation. We will raise the same banner together, fight side by side, dying yet never ceasing.
"Souls, return home!"
He shouted in a low voice, raising a spear with one hand and waving a banner with the other.
Their lower bodies stood on four legs like noble steeds, while their upper bodies resembled humans - robust and solid, reminding the Undying Monarch of the skeletal centaur cavalry he had once wanted to create. But unlike those assembled monsters, they were born as horse-people.
What difference was there between horse-people and people? He had reluctantly accepted all those chaotic aesthetic idiots, at least these foreign soul entities still maintained some human appearance.
He roared, leading the Undying Army and the new recruits in a charge.
This wasn't combat - the medium patrol warship's automated firepower and shipborne spiritual mechanoids were sufficient to cleanse this world in an extremely short time. If the veteran Undying Army members went all out, it would be truly terrifying. Such charges had already fallen behind the times.
This was a release, a celebration.
Trampling past despair, then trampling their enemies.
"Exterminate them all!" The Undying Monarch laughed, skewering a weak Heavenly Demon minion with his spear.
If this were an evenly matched battlefield, he shouldn't waste energy on such small fry. But if he wanted to teach newcomers, they were perfect.
The veteran soul entities' power was shared with the new recruits. They imitated the Undying Monarch, following techniques and experience that surfaced in their minds, deftly lifting Heavenly Demon minions, watching their soul flames burn within the enemies, reducing them to ash, absorbing them into themselves.
But the life of the deceased didn't seem so bad either.
Kill, take revenge personally, trample enemy bodies into pulp, destroy their lives, grant them death as a farewell gift to living existence.
Phantom figures wreathed in green flame darted across civilization's ruins. They cheered, laughed, shed tears, sang war songs, using enemy wails as accompaniment.
This revelry of the deceased didn't last long - their enemies had been exterminated almost imperceptibly.
Following the Undying Monarch's lead, they charged toward the medium patrol warship in spectral form.
The veteran Undying Army members had already prepared gifts: small dolls made from the recently exterminated Heavenly Demon minions, along with military insignia, unit designations, training manuals, and officer big brothers wearing mischievous smiles.
Over the ship's broadcast, the Undying Monarch said cheerfully: "Welcome, newcomers of the deceased. This is the Sky Patrol Alliance, Second Exploration Fleet, Undying Army."
"None? Excellent! Let's proceed immediately to the next world. Of course, you cannot set foot on the battlefield until completing training - you'll only be able to watch."
"Additionally, we've collected your civilization information and physiological structures. Those wishing to rebuild living civilizations, remember to apply."
While broadcasting, the Undying Monarch also seriously contemplated how to expand the efficiency of spreading the Divine Martial Emperor's soul entity concept, enabling more worlds to possess the possibility of restarting after destruction.
