Chapter 6: Broker
Chapter 6: Broker
Unlike the kind of business talks Mo Wen often saw in game bars, the broker received them in his office.
On the 28th floor of the Outer Ring Central Building, sunlight filtered softly through the glass, gently spilling into this warm and tidy room, lending the smiling broker an inexplicable aura of divinity.
He was a tall, slender man who appeared calm and unhurried. If Mo Wen hadn’t already known he was a middleman, he would have guessed this man had been a priest.
Faced with this suspicious figure radiating the air of a backstage boss, Mo Wen instinctively raised his guard, but still stepped inside. Then he saw that the smile instantly collapsed, as the man’s eyes fixed tightly on the soles of his feet.
He seemed about to say something, but to maintain his aura, he forced himself to remain inscrutable, just staring as faint blood stained his favorite carpet. Immediately afterward, Mo Wen pulled the curtains shut.
The office darkened, but the glow around the broker did not fade.
In the darkness, the glowing broker sighed helplessly: “Alright, fearless, sharp observer, extremely action-oriented—you’ve left me, this middleman, a ‘good impression’!”
He spoke the words “good impression” through clenched teeth, making K Ai standing beside him feel like he was about to be in trouble next.
But in the end, the broker didn’t take further action.
As a middleman, the key was his insight. Equipped with a complete set of scanning devices and assisted by a small computing unit within his office, he could almost completely see through every inch of Mo Wen’s structure. He immediately confirmed this was a humanoid creature, not a human. Even just from appearance, he was indistinguishable from a human—a healthy young man with black hair and black eyes and short hair.
After all, this humanoid’s body contained thousands of bones, with the chest and abdomen wrapped in sturdy bone plates. Bone density, muscle strength, and epidermal toughness all far exceeded normal human limits. Internally, there were extra organs different from existing modification methods and unidentified substances.
Considering no major company could suddenly produce a finished product completely unrelated to current technology trees without notice, he must be from another world, an alien, or somewhere else. At least, his personal AI assistant judged so.
A bizarre answer, but the fact of his existence was ironclad proof. The broker chose to trust this guess and judged the other party’s value based on it.
From performance data, this humanoid was far inferior to military-grade cyborgs. Even highly modified civilian cyborgs surpassed him in many aspects, but the impact was not simply about killing power.
New biotech developments, foreign ideologies, the method by which he arrived here…
This was an important client. Even just selling his information to the Corporation would earn a profit.
“So, tell me your name.”
“Mo Wen.”
“The reason for seeking me?”
“Selling special goods.” “Resolving conflicts.”
Mo Wen frowned and glanced at the interrupting K Ai. “Didn’t I tell you, I can help you handle the original gang. Don’t you worry?”
K Ai showed a guilty expression. “Sorry, I lied to you at first. Actually, how do I say this…”
He was tongue-tied. He had originally planned to use persuasion to solve the problem between Mo Wen and his gang, but when it came down to it, his mind went blank.
Fortunately, the broker cared more about channels than goods. He immediately retrieved K Ai from his database, found his birthplace and gang affiliation, and based on the initial personality model just built, began mediating.
“Due to a misunderstanding, Mr. Mo Wen and the Hawks Gang had a conflict in the wilderness. Afterwards, this young man K Ai tried to distance himself to save his life, right?”
K Ai nodded. “That’s correct.”
The broker nodded in understanding. “I get it. I’ll accept your request first. Mr. Mo Wen, I’ll act as a negotiator, explain the situation clearly, and then you decide, how about that?”
Mo Wen didn’t refuse and calmly waited for the explanation.
Though the broker wasn’t on the scene and hadn’t deeply contacted K Ai’s gang, his outstanding intelligence gathering and AI model deduction could outline the entire event.
“As everyone knows, with rapid technological development, cheap human labor has almost been completely surpassed by new intelligent machines. Most natural humans have no jobs or reproductive rights. They are a generation eliminated by intelligent machines and new humans, surviving only on the Corporation’s relief, indulging in various free services, waiting to die.”
“The Hawks Gang is closer to a self-governing organization of Outer Ring residents within the gangs. Their members are mainly Outer Ring civilians. The core goal of your gang should be raising tuition and enhancement fees, allowing a small number of smart children to become dignified, truly qualified ‘laborers,’ right?”
K Ai nodded, but Mo Wen frowned deeply.
He had already looked up related content online, but hearing it spoken aloud still made him uncomfortable.
The broker continued, “Not to mention almost no jobs are left for Outer Ring residents, even normal work can’t save enough for a child’s modification costs. Modifying a person is far more expensive than making a new human. You have to do some out-of-the-ordinary things that the Inner Ring would reject, and these things require leaving the city and are quite dangerous.”
“Outside the city, due to nuclear and biological attacks during the world war, the Corporation publicizes that those areas are heavily contaminated, causing people to become impulsive, violent, and sometimes suddenly harbor ill intentions to attack others.”
“By convention, unless two powers have prior agreements, people are very cautious when interacting outside the city.”
“Mr. Mo Wen, you probably sneaked near their area and were discovered.”
Mo Wen admitted, “They clearly warned me and gave me a chance to leave instead of striking first. So, I don’t think that’s a reason for them to shoot at me, and I won’t regret killing them.”
The broker judged Mo Wen’s words true based on the fleeting emotions from K Ai.
“From the perspective of preserving their own personnel, firing first is not entirely unreasonable. But without clear warnings, self-defense killing after being shot at first is also not wrong.”
“Then, let me summarize.”
“The Hawks Gang, knowing they caused the conflict and currently with only the shooter dead, their demand is likely to get back the goods and break even, not revenge. They should still have nearly thirty cyborg gunmen, a few grenades and homemade rocket launchers, and one deeply modified cyborg. Given the target, they won’t hire outside forces.”
“The Hawks Gang can provide manpower, a small amount of homemade weaponry, and opportunities for outside-city trade and theft of special goods that I don’t know about.”
“And Mr. Mo Wen, you’re alone. Of course, this ‘one person’ is dangerous enough.”
The broker smiled. “To resolve the conflict, naturally, no side should be wronged. So, Mr. Mo Wen, are you interested in a three-way deal?”
