Chapter 40: Ascension
Chapter 40: Ascension
Mo Wen returned to Xisuo City.
The empty streets were patrolled by cleaning robots collecting discarded clothes left unworn.
The people... had all vanished.
When that entity appeared, Mo Wen had vaguely guessed many would perish in the aftermath. But seeing the city reduced to such silence wasn't something easily accepted.
The profile pictures of the Hawks Gang Leader and Kai in his contacts had gone dark, yet Mo Wen still couldn't resist sending a message.
As expected, no one received it.
All they had been amounted to nothing before that calamitous power.
Those children who just received sponsorship for inner ring access... were probably dead too.
Mo Wen's footsteps didn't pause for the communication. By the time the thought formed, he'd already reached the Corporation branch.
The Corporation too had lost many employees, but the survivors' efficiency far exceeded Mo Wen's expectations. At the launch site, numerous rockets stood ready while his colleagues checked weapons and received strange injections.Among them stood the 1.12-meter-tall Ren Yiyi, looking like she'd just graduated kindergarten, yet her expression was ice-cold.
She immediately spotted Mo Wen's stealthy return: "Headquarters suspected you might survive. They sent us a no-expense-spared spiritual corpse augmentation. No time for chatter or cranial updates. Come here, remove your head, I'll transplant it directly."
Without ceremony, Mo Wen approached, detached his head, and handed it to Ren Yiyi.
Beneath his neck, his restless spirit root writhed unnaturally.
Noticing this, Ren Yiyi injected something into his neck stump before leaping up to forcefully press his head onto the new augmentation.
Both the augmentation and Mo Wen's head contained spinal columns, but after Ren Yiyi's injection, his spirit root dissolved the old artificial spine and rapidly adapted to the new one.
Even having been resurrected from pulp by Ren Yiyi before, Mo Wen still found her medical skills bordering on divine.
Such psychic medicine undoubtedly carried heavy costs.
But Ren Yiyi clearly possessed the resolve to pay them. Questioning her choices was meaningless.
Facing the impossibly petite Ren Yiyi, Mo Wen tested his new augmentation before asking: "Current status?"
Ren Yiyi immediately went to assist others, leaving Ren Sisi to respond via comms:
"The Corporation has completely broken with our faction. We have proof the current Qi Shiming is fake, while they lack evidence worth trusting. So we're destroying 'Zero' - that artificial psychic deity in the orbital fortress."
"All branches are preparing for ascent. Anti-psychic serum made from your cells is being distributed."
"Ahem... this might slightly violate sister's original agreement with you? Extreme times call for extreme measures."
"Unimportant." Mo Wen's tone barely fluctuated. "If necessary, proceed."
"Your location?"
Ren Sisi replied naturally: "Somewhere safe, preparing electronic warfare. Normally I'd wander about, but this is serious. I value my life too much - you'll only see me online until this ends."
"...Understood." Mo Wen didn't press further, simply gazing skyward in readiness. "Then—"
"Wait!" Ren Sisi interrupted. "Don't rush off - you've got company this time."
Mo Wen doubted he had comrades: "They can't match my speed."
"Wrong again, you arrogant bastard." Ren Sisi countered. "Some psychics have low energy levels, not α+ grade, but possess abilities that bridge power gaps."
Psychic power was life's crystallization, miracles forged from greatest fears and desires.
Nearby, Zhufeng - whom Mo Wen had previously defeated - smiled knowingly: "Hey, alive I see."
"At full power, I can keep pace with anyone willing to be followed."
"Just don't leave everyone behind - no one will get lost."
Mo Wen didn't argue: "Preparation time?"
Every second mattered. After being slaughtered through once, he didn't know how long before the Corporation recovered or when Zero might strike next.
With his abysmal luck, any delay could enable enemy resurgence.
Zhufeng's answer: "Now."
Now was possible.
Between the Dream Faction's declaration and Mo Wen forcing Zero's attack, survivors worldwide had prepared counterstrikes.
The network, governed by deceased pioneers' wills through shared AI-human stewardship, allowed Corporation interference but not absolute control.
Truth spread through it everywhere.
Dream Faction members carried seeds of rebellion while opponents tried crushing them - nothing could stop the uprising.
They crossed deserts and mountains - some leaving bones behind, others planting seeds in new cities before marching to the next battlefield.
The strong and determined stood ready.
Then - now.
Mo Wen looked up. His cybernetic eye couldn't locate the orbital fortress, but some fated rivalry let him lock onto it: "All units, target acquired. Prepare for..."
"Liftoff!"
Mo Wen ascended first.
Rockets and super-soldiers followed.
His new augmentation's base speed: 35x sound. Energy Level 4's thousandfold multiplier made it 35,000x - 1/25th light speed, 12,000 km per second.
An awe-inspiring figure.
They became reverse lightning, breaking planetary bonds, instantly surpassing all surface structures, the highest peaks, piercing clouds, troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere.
Solar winds, thousand-degree heat - nothing hindered them.
Corporation defenses meant to stop humans proved useless toys before god-chasing velocity.
In moments, rebels breached the artificial deity's domain.
Even the overwhelming psychic energy that could annihilate Energy Level 4 and wound Level 5 couldn't halt them.
They entered the orbital fortress turned divine kingdom.
Pathfinder-"Zhufeng" - deceased.
