Chapter 323: Chapter 323: If Griffith Squire Turns on You, You Will Face a Military Tribunal
Leclair Manor
The elder of the Leclair Family began his morning in the usual way—practicing a set of Tai Chi in the courtyard, followed by breakfast, asking about his son’s career and his grandson’s studies, then browsing through his beloved collection. His life adhered strictly to the rhythm of a typical retirement.
At dawn, a thick fog rolled in, accompanied by frost—marking the coldest time of the year. Still nestled in his blanket, the elder was rudely awakened by calls from a few fellow octogenarians, forcing him to don an overcoat, grab his walking stick, and head out.
In the side hall, Ignatius Leclair was brewing coffee. His sharp brows extended to his temples, and his deep-set phoenix eyes carried flecks of cold light, like an ink-black abyss. His expression was stern as he methodically prepared the fifth cup of coffee.
Richard Shaw was still online. Awakened early by Ignatius Leclair, he was informed about a matter of seismic consequence. Even Richard Shaw’s strikingly handsome and resolute face had gained a shadow of solemnity.
"You want me to suppress the news? Can we rely on Griffith Squire?" Richard Shaw’s considerations differed from Ignatius Leclair’s. While he could temporarily suppress the news, the bandit leaders of the Golden Triangle, now with the South Seas gates opened to them—could those men be trusted?
Having stepped down years ago, if someone else were in his position, Richard Shaw would have simply ignored this affair. But suddenly thrust into such a deep pit by Ignatius Leclair, his expression grew dark and unrelenting.
The Shaw Family and the Howard Family were intricately intertwined—sharing glory and suffering alike. At this moment, if Ignatius Leclair stood in front of him, Richard might have already swung a punch aimed straight at his handsome face.
"Give me two hours. I’ll settle everything by nine this morning," Ignatius Leclair’s voice was low and steady. He raised his gaze to the video of Richard Shaw, his thin lips tightened as he spoke, "Griffith Squire is both righteous and wicked, entirely unreliable. However, he has a fatal secret in my grasp. He won’t act recklessly."
Two hours to sweep across the coastal region. If even then, no results were found... Thinking of this, Ignatius’ expression grew increasingly grim.
Richard Shaw’s sharp gaze locked onto him as he spoke gravely, "Even if you collaborate with Griffith Squire for this matter, if he ultimately reneges, a single misstep could land you in a military court. Have you considered the consequences?"
Ignatius Leclair curled his lips into a cold smile. Griffith Squire cared for his sister more than anything. If he dared bite back, Ignatius would send Leah Squire directly to Richard Shaw’s Imperial City residence.
"You just need to suppress the news. Once the sun rises, this affair will conclude—it’s merely a misunderstanding," Ignatius said flatly, though a sharp glint of killing intent flashed in his phoenix eyes.
Richard Shaw found himself angered to the point of stomach pain by Ignatius’s indifferent demeanor. Furrowing his brows sharply, he retorted coldly, "If this matter escalates further, I will claim full responsibility, even telling the higher-ups that it was my directive. They know that all these years, I’ve been hunting for the true instigator of that accident years ago."
"You haven’t let go of that incident?" Ignatius Leclair lowered his eyes, hiding the deep meaning in his phoenix gaze.
Richard Shaw, his expression indifferent and devoid of joy or sorrow, appeared dazed for a split second. Regaining composure, he spoke with the steadiness of a mountain, "You are willing to risk a military court for the orphan girl your family took in. You should understand me. Everything I’ve done—I owe it to her."
Richard Shaw ended the call.
Ignatius Leclair’s phoenix eyes darkened. Unless absolutely desperate, he would never let Richard Shaw know that Leah Squire was his wife who had died years ago.
Otherwise, the Squire siblings would completely destroy the only brother Ignatius had left.
