Chapter 275: Chapter 275: If You’re Willing, Let’s Get Married Right Away
"Sylvester, you better be careful. Delphine’s suitors are not only numerous but also ruthless," Bessie Leclair said with a late-coming smile.
Bessie had gone to the Yeager Family residence earlier in the morning, pestering Jocelyn Yeager, which made her late. Upon arriving, she heard Sylvester’s words and immediately found herself seething with anger.
Her brother, her man—both had been utterly bewitched by this little Fox Spirit, and now Sylvester too?
Delphine, unaware of Bessie’s return, saw her coming in with Jocelyn Yeager. Out of instinct, she glanced at Jocelyn. Half a month ago, Jocelyn had quietly disappeared; rumor had it that the elder of the Yeager Family had suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized. Now, with Jocelyn attending the banquet, it seemed the elder was recovering.
"Bessie, why are you only arriving now?"
"We waited for you for quite a while."
Melody Cloud and several other socialites stepped forward to pull Bessie along, and for a moment, their laughter mingled like songbirds chirping joyfully together.
"Reginald, how is your grandfather?" Sylvester asked with a polite smile, fulfilling his role as the host with impeccable grace.
"The elder is recovering, thank you for your concern," Reginald replied gently, his smile failing to reach his eyes. His gaze flitted over Ignatius Leclair, laden with unspoken meanings. Half a month ago, in the middle of the night, he had rushed back to South East Asia, only to find out that Bessie had caused an uproar at the Yeager residence. Tearfully, she produced photos of him and Delphine at a movie set, claiming she wanted to call off their engagement.
The elder had been so enraged that he suffered a heart attack on the spot. For the past two weeks, Reginald had been busily stretched to his limit. What was originally planned to be an indefinitely postponed wedding date had now been hastily put back on the agenda.
"I heard your marriage to Bessie has been finalized. Congratulations," Sylvester said with a charming and flirtatious smile. Yet he keenly noticed that Reginald showed no trace of the happiness typical of an impending groom.
"Your wedding date is set?" Delphine suddenly asked. Her voice was calm and faint, yet it caused the atmosphere in the room to freeze instantly.
Only then did Jocelyn openly look at her. She was wearing her usual understated, elegant champagne-colored off-shoulder dress, layered with a warm wool shawl. Her short hair now reached her shoulders, giving her a graceful and subtle beauty. A pang of pain hit him as he nodded with a hoarse voice and said, "Grandfather’s health isn’t good; he’s eager to see me married soon."
Jocelyn’s eyes lingered on her face. Thinking about the pressure Bessie had been exerting by leveraging the Leclair Family’s influence, and about Delphine’s struggles and isolation in their household, he spoke with clarity and composure: "Delphine, if you’re willing to marry me, we can get married right now."
The crowd, filled with young elites of their generation, gasped in shock at this declaration, their expressions shifting dramatically. If the engagement between Reginald and Bessie were to fall through and replaced by a sudden marriage to Delphine, a foster daughter living at the Leclair residence, it would not only cause a rift between the Leclair and Yeager families—Reginald himself could even face expulsion and disownment by his own lineage. How could he dare to destroy his future like this?
"Reginald, how dare you spout such nonsense," Ignatius Leclair, who had remained taciturn until now, suddenly erupted, his voice sharp and commanding.
Jocelyn acted as though he hadn’t heard, continuing to gaze at Delphine. His words came low and tender: "You’ve always known how I feel about you. If you accept me, I am willing to abandon everything related to the Yeager Family."
Such a deep and resolute confession threw the room into even greater chaos.
Delphine’s face turned a shade paler. However, at this moment, Jocelyn had already forced her into the eye of the storm. She couldn’t retreat now, or it would mean leaving Jocelyn to take all the blame and condemnation alone.
Just as Delphine opened her mouth to respond, Bessie, having witnessed everything, stormed forward with reddened eyes and slapped Jocelyn hard across the face. She sobbed and cried, "What does she have that’s better than me? Years ago, when she messed around with other men and got kicked out by the Leclair Family, you took the fall for her—and now you want to marry her too?"
After landing the slap, Bessie viciously shoved Delphine backward with all her strength.
