Chapter 729 Benjamin’s temperament can make him howl all night long
Benjamin and Nicholas started crying even harder the moment they saw their mommy and daddy return, clutching Ignatius Leclair’s neck tightly and refusing to let go.
After Delphine managed to calm the two children and took them to wash their faces, Ignatius finally noticed the old man and spoke leisurely, "The Howard Family just said that the old lady got so furious she fell ill and is now bedridden, even the dean of the Military District General Hospital was startled."
The old man’s flushed face was agitated. Despite his age, overwhelmed by jealousy and longing for his great-grandchildren, he went to the Imperial City to argue with someone—and even managed to make them sick in the process.
"I was just going to bring Nicholas and Benjamin back. I didn’t say anything," the old man muttered defensively, sounding like a guilty schoolboy.
Ignatius smirked, nodded faintly, and remarked coolly, "Bringing them back is fine, but can you handle those two little troublemakers? Benjamin’s temperament—if Delphine and I didn’t come back—he’d wail all night."
The old man frowned at the mention of Benjamin. That little rascal was just so hard to deal with; Nicholas was much better—obedient and well-behaved.
"Benjamin’s bad temper takes after you. You were no better when you were young—stubborn as hell, always finding ways to get whatever you wanted, unreasonable and domineering," the old man retorted, his face reddening as he tried to hold his ground despite the reprimand.
Ignatius squinted with his phoenix-shaped eyes, and upon seeing the old man acknowledge his mistake, he merely said coldly, "Do you know why I sent the two children to the Howard Family? It isn’t because I value Grandma Howard more than you, but rather because their household provides a better environment. Over the years, the old lady has instilled kindness and respect in her descendants, which makes it more suitable for raising children."
After a brief pause, Ignatius continued, "From childhood to adulthood, you’ve spoiled me excessively, giving me first choice of everything good. The children from the second and third households are also part of the Leclair Family, but over time, such favor breeds resentment. Although there’s only one heir legally, your approach often backfires."
The discord among the Leclair Family’s descendants had always been the old man’s greatest source of anguish. Hearing this, he grew visibly emotional and choked up as he said, "It’s all because your grandmother left us too early; she didn’t teach you all properly."
As he wiped away his tears, he sighed, "I don’t ask for much. All I want is to see Nicholas and Benjamin every month."
Ignatius nodded and replied, "Whenever you want to see them, just inform the housekeeper or Delphine, and I’ll arrange for someone to bring you over."
The situation at the Leclair Family estate remained unresolved, and as long as that was the case, Ignatius would never leave his children at the family manor. If the old man wanted to see them, he would have to visit the villa.
While Ignatius and the old man continued their conversation, Delphine took Nicholas and Benjamin to the backyard fountain to wash their faces and hands.
The faucet of the fountain in the Leclair Family garden was set very low, with a layer of round, smooth warm stones underneath, submerged in the water. It looked incredibly charming.
Benjamin, still visibly upset, sat obediently by the water feature while his little chest occasionally hitched. His eyes were fixed on the white warm stones submerged in water as he reached out his small hands for Delphine to clean them.
Delphine, careful not to hurt him, soaked a towel in warm water and gently applied it to the little girl’s red, swollen eyes, her tone tender as she said, "Silly Benjamin, crying so hard only hurts yourself."
"If I don’t cry, they won’t know how sad Benjamin is," Benjamin replied between hiccups while grabbing the corner of Delphine’s clothing. "Mommy, Benjamin wants to stay with you forever."
"Alright, forever," Delphine said with a smile. She then cleaned Nicholas’s face and hands as well.
Once she had tidied both children up until they were clean and adorable, Delphine noticed they soon started playing in the little garden. She finally breathed a sigh of relief—until her peripheral vision caught a figure hiding behind the ornamental trees in the garden, causing her gaze to falter abruptly.
