Chapter 579: Stronger Than You Guys as the Male Lead, Driver, Assistant Director, and Current Husband
The total investment for the youth film "When You’re Lonely, Who Will You Miss?" won’t exceed fifty million, yet the number of people signing up for the female lead audition was unexpectedly high.
Even though Delphine had delegated the task of setting up the studio to Kyla Zamora, she was still running herself ragged.
Not only were numerous investors reaching out proactively, but there were also countless people using connections to probe for information, try out for the roles, or seek collaborations.
Online, there wasn’t just support but also skepticism. Although Delphine’s acting skills were excellent, she was ultimately too young and not professionally trained. Before the film was released, many people were hesitant to believe that she had the capability for such a project.
The assistant director came recommended by Theodore Hughes—a young man fresh out of a professional film program named Lucian Bates.
"Director Gu, I’m here to pick you up for the audition location." On the day of the female lead audition, Lucian enthusiastically showed up at the small villa where Delphine was staying early in the morning, only to find that quite a few people had also come to pick her up.
Lucian was an ambitious and driven young man who had studied under Theodore Hughes. He already had decent resources within the entertainment sector. If he stayed consistent for five or ten years, he could make it to the ranks of the nation’s top directors. Yet, this time he had chosen to bet everything on working with Delphine, a complete newcomer with no experience. It was nothing short of a gamble.
"Pfft, another one? Even if I wanted to be the driver, I wouldn’t have a chance." Babyface Nicholas, having just dropped his child off at the kindergarten, returned only to unhappily discover his spot as the driver had been taken. These days, the men out there were truly fierce like tigers.
"Lucian, you’re here so early?" Delphine, noticing that the doorbell hadn’t stopped ringing since morning, was surprised—and slightly touched—to find not only Cassius Turner coming over to cheer her on, but also Charles Taylor, the reigning movie king in Imperial City. Now Lucian had arrived too.
For the audition, Delphine had deliberately worn a black-and-white outfit and applied lip stain, giving her a radiant complexion. Though her features remained beautiful and delicate, she exuded an air of confidence and capability.
"My mentor asked me to pick you up for the audition site. He’ll also be coming today to back you up," Lucian said with a smile. His eyes flickered slightly as he took in the sight of Charles Taylor—known for staying far away from gossip—and Imperial City’s most popular elite professor, Wilbur Turner. Yet, his demeanor remained cheerful.
Although Delphine now had a child, there wasn’t a significant man in her life. This return to the entertainment sector had sparked intense curiosity among those with vested interests in the industry. However, considering their own status, very few dared to show up in person.
Hearing that Theodore Hughes was purposely coming over, Delphine instantly felt reassured.
"Lucian and I will head to the audition site first," Delphine said, smiling at Cassius Turner and Charles Taylor.
"I’ll tag along for the fun," Charles Taylor said as he stood up. Glancing at Professor Wilbur Turner and Babyface Nicholas, the seasoned and charming movie king joked, "If you don’t find a suitable candidate for the male lead, you can call on me. I can even do a small cameo."
Nicholas immediately bristled. Babyface glared at this so-called movie king with hostility. You’re already the movie king—why come to steal his bread and butter? He was, after all, an unemployed worker.
Delphine couldn’t help laughing at his reaction. Charles Taylor’s appearance fee was outrageously high; for her low-budget film, it wouldn’t be feasible even to consider him.
Cassius Turner, seeing a room full of potential rivals, had a faint sense of regret, though his face remained elegant and composed as he said warmly, "Delphine, does the production budget suffice? Your film is a must-invest for me."
Well, being an investor is top-tier, isn’t it? Beats being the male lead, the driver, the assistant director, or the ex-husband. Wilbur Turner sneered internally.
