Chapter 454: Can the Leclair Family Still Brazenly Snatch This Child Away?
Ignatius Leclair was in an exceptionally good mood today. Narrowing his deep, fox-like eyes, he spoke slowly, "Her health is fragile, she needs rest. Don’t let your impulsiveness scare her."
"Compared to you, Delphine would obviously prefer seeing me rather than you," Leah Squire shot back without hesitation, mocking him, "If you truly care about her, then stop showing up and making things worse for her."
In the entire Southeast region, only two people dared speak to Ignatius like this—his dearest, and this brash, unrestrained young lady. This particular lady was also rumored to be the apple of Major General Shaw’s eye. Maximilian, standing off to the side, curled his lips and pretended to be invisible.
Ignatius let out a cold snort of disdain. "Too late," he remarked indifferently. Now that Delphine was carrying his child, he would certainly make it a point to be around every day.
Leah, seeing he had fallen silent, was satisfied and made her way into the hospital room.
Delphine was lying on the hospital bed in a daze. When she saw Leah enter, a faint smile broke across her face. Sitting up gently, she greeted, "What brings you here?"
"Desmond called me, said you were pregnant—I was so shocked I rushed right over." Leah discarded her bag on the sofa and walked over to hold Delphine’s hand. "The child... is Ignatius’s?"
Delphine nodded.
"After your miscarriage years ago, the doctor said it’d be extremely difficult for you to conceive again. Still, this is good news; it gives you something to hold onto," Leah said, her voice catching as she thought back to how Delphine had lost that child saving her life. Guilt had weighed on Leah for years. She quickly masked her sorrow with a cheerful grin and went on, "You must give birth to a charming little boy! I’ll be his godmother!"
Delphine burst into giggles, replying, "If you’re so fond of children, why not find someone you like and have one yourself?"
Leah looked a bit guilty, suddenly reminded of the pair of wild pups she’d recently picked up—though she hadn’t had the chance to share the story with Delphine, who had been bogged down with lawsuits. She had, quite unexpectedly, taken in one stunning young man along with a chef.
The man was wheelchair-bound, yet his pride was fiercer than words could describe. His sense of dignity was so strong that he’d grown resentful whenever she skipped meals or didn’t travel to the garden villa for dinner, perceiving it as an insult—eating charity food. It was driving Leah insane; she, a bona fide beauty striving to maintain her figure, had gained two pounds because of it. Over time, she’d spent fewer nights at the Squire Manor, sleeping instead in the garden villa more often.
Luckily, Griffith Squire had gone off to Europe. Otherwise, he’d surely butcher the chef and drag her back home without mercy.
"What’s Ignatius’s plan? Does he want you to have this child?" Leah couldn’t help but think of the rigid old man from the Leclair Family. Families like theirs placed the highest value on lineage. When conflict inevitably broke out, Delphine would suffer the most.
Her expression cool, as always, Delphine murmured quietly, "Honestly, I’ve been suspecting for some time now... that this child is meant to be born. But dealing with the Leclair Family will be no small battle."
She had endured unimaginable pain when she lost her first child—pain that tore her heart apart. No matter what kind of man the father might be, an unborn child was blameless. She owed her first child a life; she could never betray another one.
Leah tightened her grip on Delphine’s hand and resolutely said, "Don’t worry. First, keep Ignatius appeased. Once we safely deliver the child, we’ll set everything in motion. No matter how powerful the Leclair Family is, they can’t openly snatch the baby away."
Leah’s assessment struck at Delphine’s deepest concern. Her body was weak, and now that she was pregnant, fleeing would be impossible. The only option was to ensure the child was born safely.
At this point, there was no possibility of reconciliation between her and Ignatius. The man’s methods were ruthlessly cunning, and if he decided to act on his most sinister impulses and seize the child... how could the frail, elderly, and infirm on her side ever stand a chance against Ignatius?
Delphine bit her pale lips, her complexion growing visibly paler.
