Chapter 368: Old Xie, even if I have a playmate, I am still the best with you in the world
Leah winked at her and whispered softly, "Don’t let Griffith hear you. He went through great lengths to bring this famous fireworks family here to the South Seas for a performance. He says it’s for me, but I think it’s really for you. I’ve seen him use this trick back in the Golden Triangle."
Leah chuckled. Men are all like this. In the past, Griffith had no rivals in love. But now, in the South Seas, with a powerful and influential rival like Ignatius Leclair, even for the sake of face, he has to put on this kind of show.
"What are you whispering about now?" Griffith’s handsome face flashed across the video, followed by a dangerously cold smile. "Leah, remove that furry, ugly thing of yours. I want to video chat with Delphine."
"Snowball, go bite him."
"Oh crap, oh crap."
Delphine watched the playful Squire siblings in the video and smiled with her eyes curved. Even though they were only half-siblings, Griffith pampered Leah to the bone. On the streets, people might hate the siblings to the core, but leaving behind the stormy life on the run, they were just normal, everyday siblings.
Shaw Mansion in the Imperial City
After the New Year’s Eve dinner, Casimir Shaw was dressed neatly, shaking the hand of the elderly lady as he hopped off to the venue to watch performances. It was one of Casimir’s favorite activities every year.
Old Shaw was like a wooden person, hardly ever taking him out to play or playing himself. If not for Casimir’s patience with Old Shaw, no one would play with him. That’s why, besides watching the performances, Casimir loved playing with Old Shaw the most.
The Shaw Family received all kinds of invitations every year. In the early years, they were low-key, but later, the old lady couldn’t bear to see the great-grandchild being taught to be so sensible and well-behaved from such a young age. As long as there was a lively invitation, she would accept it and ask the younger generation to accompany the great-grandchild.
Every time Casimir Shaw went out, he was accompanied by a spirited great-grandmother with grey hair, and surrounded by uncles and aunts whose mere presence would cause a stir across the Imperial City’s circles. Thus, Casimir found out that besides Old Shaw, he had no playmates.
No little friends were willing to play with his whole family, but he couldn’t bear to see his great-grandmother sad.
"Old Shaw, I’m going to watch the performances with great-grandmother, uncles, and aunts, okay? Be good at home. Even if I make new little friends, I’ll still be the best with you." Casimir Shaw stood on tiptoe and gave Old Shaw a loud kiss on the cheek, smothering him with saliva, and then joyfully headed out with his New Year’s wishes to watch the show.
Every year, Casimir Shaw made three wishes. The first was for mommy to find the way home soon and come take him and Old Shaw away. The second was for a dozen playmates. The third was to wake up every day to lots of sticky rice cakes to eat.
Yet, these three wishes fell through each year. Casimir Shaw thought he wasn’t behaved enough. If he became more lovable, maybe all three wishes would be realized at once.
When the family went out, there was a special team leading the way. Once everyone had left, the entire Shaw Mansion became increasingly quiet.
The man walked out of the courtyard, his expression solemn, gazing at the bustling nightscape of the Imperial City. The stars were obscured, the moon hid behind the clouds, and the Buddha beads in his hand became a deep, polished purple from his constant rubbing.
The elderly lady and others had just left when the sound of movement and voices filled the Shaw Mansion again.
"Sir, we’re here to pay our New Year’s respects." Shuangzi led the way, followed by a group of imposing men in military uniforms. One by one, they filled the courtyard with local specialties and gifts, lively celebrating the New Year.
