Chapter 278: How Can We Get to Know Each Other Deeply Time After Time If It’s Not Interesting?
Delphine hadn’t expected Ignatius Leclair would be in her room.
The small attic was previously used for storing plants and miscellaneous items. It wasn’t spacious, just over twenty square meters. Ignatius sat on the lone carved wooden chair, his tall and lean figure exuding an overbearing presence, making the already cramped space feel even smaller.
"Why are you here?" Delphine frowned slightly and asked.
Ignatius had waited all afternoon, his patience already worn thin. Seeing her enter, instead of joy, he felt a hint of surprise. His handsome features darkened as he said, "Delphine Carter, I’ve waited five hours for you."
Delphine noticed how he spoke in a lofty, condescending tone, as if granting her a favor. Her lips curled into a smile, revealing faint dimples, and she chuckled lightly, "I didn’t ask you to wait. If Mr. Leclair came because of yesterday’s incident, hoping I’d visit Miss Cloud in the hospital to thank her for saving my life, I’ve already done so. If there’s nothing else, please leave—I need to rest."
Ignatius’s expression turned sour. Over the years, he had never lowered himself to wait for a woman, let alone speak to one so gently. Yet Delphine was giving him the cold shoulder. Truly, she had been spoiled far too much.
"You have nothing to say about yesterday? No questions at all?" Ignatius suppressed the anger brewing inside. Yesterday, he had deliberately gone down to save Melody, and unwilling to return to an empty house, he had stayed out all night. Yet she hadn’t even asked about it.
Delphine lowered her eyes and let out a frosty laugh. What was there to ask? It was nothing but a relationship based on fleeting physical intimacy. She had no grounds to question his involvement with Melody. Besides, this shameful, threadbare connection they shared had been on the verge of collapse for a long time.
Now that she’d found her footing in the South Seas and gained the ability to protect herself, if she offended Ignatius and he chased her out again, she’d gladly accept it. She was no longer that naïve eighteen-year-old girl.
"If you have nothing to say, then I do." Ignatius sneered as she remained silent.
"As for Reginald Yeager, don’t even think about it. He has no authority over marriage matters." His deep gaze was as inscrutable as an ancient well, emitting a biting coldness. Not to mention Bessie’s obsession with him; even without Bessie, there were still Jasmine and others. Reginald Yeager could forget ever laying a finger on his woman.
Delphine smirked faintly and replied, "The Leclair family really is amusing. One person clings relentlessly to a man who doesn’t love her, while another steps in for his sister, questioning me instead of the people involved. You all certainly take arrogance to an unmatched level."
Ignatius felt his chest tighten with frustration. Even while taunting him coldly, her small, pale face was meticulously beautiful. It made him seethe in anger and yet itched with a strange urge. He stood abruptly.
Seeing him rise so suddenly, Delphine instinctively stepped back under the pressure of his towering height, only to be forced against the wall by him, her back pressed against its cold surface.
Ignatius lowered his face, gripping her pointed chin. His voice was deep and measured as he said slowly, "My family’s arrogance—you’ve known that for a long time, haven’t you? If it wasn’t interesting, how could you let me press you down time and again for a deeper understanding?"
His voice was low, laced with inexplicable mockery and suggestive undertones.
Delphine’s expression changed sharply at his words, recalling those nights where their intimacy had gone far beyond superficial, culminating in him taking full liberties with her. Shame and rage surged simultaneously as she snapped, "You merely took advantage of my youthful naivety to seduce me. Such behavior—you think it’s worth flaunting?"
