Chapter 1106: Cleansing Richard Shaw’s Reputation
Chapter 1106: Cleansing Richard Shaw’s Reputation
Old Madam Shaw’s admonition made the onlookers look at Crystal Landon with new eyes. Despite her pregnancy, her radiant beauty and ivory skin outshone the pure and charming young woman in the photograph. They realized they might have been used unwittingly as pawns, sparking a sense of regret among them.
The Shaw Family was a high door they couldn’t touch. How could Major General fancy a country girl? Seeing this beautiful pregnant woman, they thought it might be true that someone was trying to harm the Shaw family’s offspring.
The crowd looked at Luna Lawrence’s parents with disdain and contempt. Yet, when such high-door secrets were at play, they eagerly perked up their ears.
Old Madam Shaw’s words were shrewd and sharp. Clearly, the couple aimed to ruin the Shaw’s reputation and harm her great-grandson. Even if her grandson knew Luna Lawrence, even if there was impropriety, it must not be admitted. Instead, they must firmly claim that the Lee family is trying to extort them.
Crystal Landon saw that, although Old Madam Shaw had subdued the rascals, the matter had already tainted the Shaw family’s reputation and Richard Shaw’s name. If not handled well, Richard might have to face an investigation. The only solution now was to make them confess that it was all fabricated; otherwise, even if they beat them to death, Richard Shaw’s stain would remain.
"I am about to give birth and wish to accumulate blessings for my child. I don’t want to see you jailed. If you have troubles, just speak up, and we will consider it an act of charity. As long as you clarify, the Shaw Family won’t make it difficult for you." Crystal Landon restrained her temper and spoke softly.
With Old Madam Shaw having established her authority, Crystal surmised that the couple was likely here to extort money. If they admitted that they were after money, the matter would be easily resolved.
When Luna Lawrence’s parents heard this, they felt hopeful due to the young pregnant woman’s kindness. They held no familial affection for their daughter; if Luna hadn’t paid for them to come to the Imperial City and told them they could gain money from causing a scene at the hospital, they wouldn’t have come.
The dark-complexioned woman in her forties, seeing there was money to be had without jail time, forgot Luna’s words and stopped crying, fawningly saying, "I’ll tell. We just want to get some money. You wealthy folks don’t lack money. Just a little is enough to feed our family for years."
The Lee parents only knew their son was a soldier who died years ago. Luna had abandoned them for years and they knew nothing about her dealings with Richard Shaw.
"Indeed. Luna said if we caused a scene at the hospital, you’d surely give us money. That girl ran off with some wild man for years, brought those photos for us to stir trouble, and now I’ve spoken." Luna’s father eyed them eagerly, saying gruffly, "You better not go back on your word and refuse the money."
These two are rural schemers and rascals, barely literate and ignorant of decorum, making a living by petty theft. They even tried to sell their daughter at a young age. Their words sickened the onlookers.
Turns out, dealing with rural scoundrels, the Shaw Family was indeed unlucky.
As the situation unexpectedly turned, the crowd began to sympathize with the Shaw Family.
Crystal Landon smiled slightly, her pretty peach blossom eyes squinting, saying calmly, "Since this misunderstanding arose from financial difficulty, clearing things up is enough. Old Madam Shaw, being a long-time devotee, won’t hold a grudge. But you shouldn’t let your daughter repeat such tricks on other families. Though I am lenient due to my pregnancy, the sons of noble families in the Imperial City are less forgiving."
"Zhao Nanny, give them money to go back home and live well." She glanced at Zhao Nanny, defining the incident as an attempt at money extortion in a few words.
"As long as it’s not to slander my Shaw Family’s name or harm our offspring—my great-grandson is about to be born—I won’t hold it against you." Old Madam Shaw, ever shrewd, was pleased to see Crystal’s words wash clean her grandson’s reputation and quickly asked Zhao Nanny to give them money.
Old Madam Shaw brought quite a sum of cash with her. She wasn’t adept at using electronic devices and was accustomed to using cash. Crystal Landon, at the hospital, had packed more than a hundred thousand in cash.
Zhao Nanny took out the wallet and handed all the cash inside over to the couple, clearly stating, "You’re lucky to have met our Old Madam and Young Madam. Had it been others, you’d be beaten to death. Take your money and don’t live off scams anymore—live a peaceful life."
"Alright, alright." Luna’s parents, having never seen such a sum, were willing to kneel and call them grandfather for it. They greedily stuffed the money into their pockets, drawing scorn from the watching crowd.
Shaw family is extraordinarily kind and merciful, giving money to such scammers.
"Old Madam, such scammers should be reported to the police!"
"Indeed! Why give them money?"
The crowd exclaimed indignantly.
Old Madam Shaw glanced at Crystal Landon and smiled, "My granddaughter-in-law is about to give birth. Meeting this incident might be Buddha’s will for us to distribute wealth to accumulate blessings for the child. If they scam again, someone will deal with them. I hope everyone deletes the video; our honest family can’t afford such slander."
Eamon Turner had already instructed everyone to return their phones while he watched Luna’s parents run off with the money, ordering someone to follow them.
The crowd retrieved their phones and began deleting videos.
Seeing the matter settle, Crystal Landon felt her belly heavy, grabbed Old Madam Shaw’s hand, her face pale, and said, "Grandma, let’s go."
Shocked by Crystal’s poor complexion, Old Madam Shaw hurriedly called Zhao Nanny to help, leaving everything else to Eamon Turner to handle.
"Quick, get the doctor to have a look." Old Madam Shaw said, trembling.
Back in the delivery suite, Crystal Landon lay on the bed, sipping water while waiting for the hospital to check her. Once told there were no signs of labor, she breathed a sigh of relief, having thought her waters had broken.
After such a turmoil, she was exhausted, drenched in cold sweat, nearly fainting.
Orville Turner soon returned, reporting in a sombre tone, "All videos deleted, even those online were completely blocked. For precaution, we filmed the latter part after Young Madam arrived, so no dirt can stick to the Shaw Family or the Major General."
"Did you detain that couple?" Crystal, furious, asked. If not for silencing the public, she wouldn’t have handed money to those rogues.
