"Alright, it's time to head out," said Lin Mu.With that, Lin Mu and Man Luo left the restaurant together and got into the car. Lin Mu turned on the car's navigation system and drove straight to the Science and Technology Research Institute located in the suburbs.
About twenty minutes later, the navigation system indicated that they had arrived at the institute. Lin Mu parked the car in front of a rather ordinary compound, which housed three rows of simple buildings. The entrance was marked with a long white wooden board that read Huaxia Technology Research Institute Headquarters.
As they got out of the car, Man Luo glanced around, looking quite puzzled, and asked Lin Mu, "Don't tell me that this is the amazing place you mentioned, gathering the world's most advanced bio-genetic research technologies?"
Lin Mu nodded sincerely, "Yes, why?"
"Judging by its size, it seems less impressive than even a city hospital," Man Luo observed as she glanced around.
Indeed, the place didn't look as luxurious as one might imagine. The ordinary buildings, the mundane iron gate, and a guard post that appeared somewhat competent were all that constituted the place. Other than the formal guard post, everything else would make one think it was merely a common plant and animal research base.
"Haha, don't jump to conclusions. Once you're inside, you'll understand," Lin Mu chuckled.
Lin Mu knew the mysteries of this place; despite its ordinary appearance, the technologies within were astonishing, on par with international standards. The facilities even included missile defense measures, boasting the tightest security possible. The researchers inside were all elites in biotechnology, something Man Luo, who focused mainly on assassination, could not comprehend. However, Lin Mu was aware of the significance of their research, which could affect Huaxia and even humanity's future.
"Alright then, I'd like to take a look inside," Man Luo said, hands on her hips. In her mind, she had mostly convinced herself that Lin Mu had found a small science institute, hardly a major national research base. It was just a little outing, after all. She figured they might even witness someone's self-humiliation act, haha!
"Let's go," Lin Mu smiled, preparing to go inside. But as they reached the entrance, the guards stopped them.
"Please present your credentials," the guard said with a blank expression.
"I don't have them with me. Could you inform your director? He'll understand," Lin Mu replied.
"I'm sorry, but without credentials, you cannot enter," the guard insisted.
Lin Mu was quite frustrated. Hadn't the old man arranged everything? And now he couldn't even get past the gate.
"Hey, buddy, I've already spoken to your director. Didn't he inform you?" Lin Mu asked.
"No," the guard replied.
"Ugh..." Lin Mu cursed internally. Damn it, this old man is making me lose face right in front of Man Luo.
As expected, Man Luo looked at Lin Mu with teasing eyes, "Haha, well, it is indeed secure. Even you can't get in, so it must be tight."
"Come on, girl, don't mock me. It's just miscommunication," Lin Mu said, chuckling awkwardly, feeling quite helpless.
Of course, he couldn't force his way in, as causing a conflict would lead to more embarrassment in front of Man Luo.
"Hey, bro, you could call your director's office. He'll understand. Sorry for the trouble," Lin Mu suggested since there was no other way.
"Sorry, but our regulations require credentials for entry. Without them, you'll need to leave," the guard said sternly.
Lin Mu felt helpless. This guard seemed stubborn, head full of proteins, perhaps? But it made sense; he and Man Luo were dressed like ordinary people without proof, making entry to such a high-security place unlikely.
Just as Lin Mu contemplated calling the old man, a stretch Hongqi sedan pulled up at the entrance. Lin Mu saw an opportunity and went forward to stop the car. The guard quickly saluted the car before rushing up to Lin Mu, "Please step aside."
Standing before the car, Lin Mu didn't budge, instead calmly asking, "This car belongs to your director, right?"
"Correct, please step aside, or I'll have to use force," the guard said gravely.
Lin Mu chuckled, ignoring the guard, and approached the car, tapping on the window.
"Professor Zhang, correct?" Lin Mu called out at the car door.
At this moment, the window rolled down, and a bespectacled middle-aged man poked his head out, asking, "Who are you?"
"Oh, I'm Lin Mu. Elder Lin asked me to come over. I have something that will surely pique your interest, so I brought it for your research," Lin Mu explained with a smile.
Professor Zhang quickly opened the car door, shook hands with Lin Mu, "You're Lin Mu?"
"Yes, that's me. Though your guard here won't let me in," Lin Mu replied with a grin.
"My apologies, I've been too busy and forgot to inform them. My sincerest apologies," Professor Zhang said apologetically.
"It's alright, no worries," Lin Mu waved it off.
The guard standing by the car was stunned, cold sweat forming on his forehead. Anyone receiving such respectful treatment from the director was surely extraordinary. Reflecting on his earlier attitude, it was fortunate Lin Mu didn't hold him accountable.
Professor Zhang extended his hand eagerly, "Colonel Lin, please come with us into the car for a discussion."
The term "Colonel Lin" left the guard dumbfounded. Oh my, it turned out Lin Mu was actually a colonel!
More shocked than the guard was Man Luo, who stood nearby. Hearing those words, she wished to doubt her own ears rather than believe she heard them correctly.
"Colonel? This guy is a colonel? He sure doesn't look like one," Man Luo was dizzy with disbelief, wondering how it could be possible.
"Perhaps it was prearranged," Man Luo comforted herself, choosing not to believe until she saw the facilities inside were truly part of a military bio-genetic institute.
But seeing the armed guards at the entrance made Man Luo begin to question herself.
"Alright, let's get in the car, Man Luo," Lin Mu called out to the still-dazed Man Luo.
