The Snow Wolf's Mate

The One That Got Away:

The One That Got Away:

[POV: Cole]

The trees blurred past me as I walked, no destination in mind. Just movement. Just breath and pain.

Aria’s voice still echoed in my ears—gentle, steady, kind. But final.

“I loved you once. But love isn’t always enough.”

Her words had sliced deeper than any blade.

I didn’t try to stop the ache. I let it sink in, let it take root and throb beneath my skin, because I deserved every jagged second of it.

I had ruined everything.

All the careful plans, the pain I’d swallowed, the choices I made believing they were for her—it all meant nothing now. I had hoped she would see through the past. That she’d look at me and know I had tried, in my own broken way, to protect her.

But maybe it wasn’t enough. Maybe it never had been.

I staggered down a sloped path, letting the cold air bite at my skin, the scent of pine and soil grounding me as much as it haunted me.

This was the same forest I’d once brought her through—hidden paths, secret meetings. Whispers that felt like hope, back when we believed the world could be kind to us.

Now those memories felt like ash in my mouth.

I had convinced myself for months that playing Dayana’s game—letting her believe I was still hers—was a necessary evil. That enduring her poison, her touch, her manipulations, would keep me close enough to Aria to protect her. That when the time came, I could whisk her away before Dayana ever got the chance to destroy her.

It was a lie I’d clung to like a lifeline.

When Aria’s eyes met mine, I saw the hesitation, the quiet, painful resolve. I knew instantly she had already slipped through my fingers. The way she stood—stronger, more confident than I'd ever seen her—told me everything I needed to know.

She had moved on. Without me.

And when she gently but firmly rejected me, the shock felt like a physical blow. It hollowed me out, left me empty, stunned, unable to breathe.

My thoughts raced desperately, scrambling for an explanation. I had planned for so long, dreamed of nothing but rescuing her, making amends, showing her I could be the man she always deserved.

I had been her first. Her safe place. Her future. And now, I was nothing but the shadow of a choice she didn’t make.

I’d imagined us escaping together, finding peace far away from the darkness Dayana had brought into our lives. Now, all that hope had shattered in a single moment.

I stopped beneath a hollowed tree and leaned back against it, closing my eyes.

Was the pain I caused really beyond repair?

Maybe it was. Maybe I had waited too long. Played the part too well. Betrayed her one too many times.

But Goddess—I hadn’t meant to.

I had wanted to love her. I did love her. More than Dayana could ever understand. More than I had ever dared admit, even to myself. Aria was light in a world that had been choking me in the shadows for years.

And when I looked at her, I saw something brighter than anything I’d ever known—something pure enough to burn away the rot in me. Something I wanted to protect.

Not just to possess. But to deserve.

I had hoped—no, believed—that we could be one of those tragic love stories with a happy ending. The kind that ends with redemption, not ruin.

I couldn’t go back. Not to Dayana’s side. Not to her sheets. The very thought made my skin crawl.

I know her now. Know the depth of her darkness. She hadn’t just manipulated me—she had poisoned me. And I let her.

Rau, my wolf, still whispered to me sometimes. Still clawed at the walls of my mind, demanding I take back power, reclaim status, erase Aria and every piece of weakness she stirred in me.

But I didn’t want to listen to him. Not anymore.

Because that darkness? That hunger for dominance, control, blood? That was her domain. Dayana’s. And if I ever lost the fight with Rau… if I ever let him win…

I didn’t want Dayana anywhere near me when that happened. Let her burn with the monster she’d helped create.

But Aria has never had to see that version of me. I would not let her memory be stained with it. She’d let me go with grace. With kindness.

And I would honor that by letting her be. Even if it shattered me.
