The Snow Wolf's Mate

The Breaking Point:

The Breaking Point:

[POV: Hayden]

I dropped to my knees beside her, heart hammering like thunder in my chest. She was gasping for air, her body trembling uncontrollably.

"Aria, look at me," I urged, my voice rough with panic I couldn't hide. "Breathe. You're safe. You're okay—"

But my words didn't reach her. She stared past me, her eyes wide with terror, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her fingers clawed at my shirt, desperate for something to hold onto, to ground herself.

"Please— Please make it stop," she sobbed, her voice broken and raw. "I can't— I can't—"

Each plea she uttered was a knife twisting inside me, carving my insides with helplessness. My mind raced, frantically searching for something—anything—that would help her.

Inside my head, Sirius howled in anguish, wild and furious.

“Help her!” he growled desperately. “Save her— Do something!”

"I’m trying!" I snarled aloud, feeling the frustration claw at me.

I wrapped my arms tighter around Aria, holding her close, hoping my touch alone might calm her.

"Listen to me, Aria. Focus on my voice. It's just you and me. You're safe now."

But she couldn't hear me. She buried her face deeper against my chest, her cries growing louder, her body convulsing harder with each ragged breath she took.

"Please…" she whispered brokenly. "I can't breathe… It hurts…"

I’d faced countless battles. Blood. Pain. Death. None of that had ever shaken me like this—holding her trembling, fragile form in my arms, unable to shield her from her own fear.

"Aria—look at me." I cupped her face in my hands, forcing her eyes toward mine. Those piercing blue eyes were glazed, wild, drowning in panic.

My pulse quickened. Panic rose sharply inside me, echoing hers, growing stronger every second I failed to calm her.

I couldn't let this go on. I couldn't watch her suffer—not like this.

Without thinking further, I made a split-second decision. Closing my eyes, I summoned the power buried deep within—the rare gift every Alpha in our pack gathered but rarely dared to use.

Mental control.

I pushed that power gently toward her mind, a whisper of command: Calm. Be still.

It was dangerous. It was draining—both for her and me—but it was my only hope now.

Immediately, the effect washed over her. Her sobbing halted abruptly. Her violent trembling ceased. Aria sagged forward, collapsing into my arms, completely limp and exhausted.

I exhaled sharply, relief flooding me as I gathered her close, holding her tenderly against my chest. Her face rested against my heart, her breathing still rapid but calmer.

Slowly, I eased the mental hold on her, careful not to drain her further. I brushed the tears gently from her flushed cheeks, my thumb grazing her heated skin.

Under my touch, she burned—not with illness or fever. Untamed energy surged just beneath the surface, pushing desperately for release.

What the hell was happening to her?

"Aria…" I murmured softly, my fingers tracing gently along her jawline. "What's wrong?"

For a moment, she didn't answer. Instead, she weakly pressed her cheek into my palm, almost unconsciously nuzzling into my touch as though seeking comfort. Her trust—her vulnerability—hit something deep and buried in my chest, and my breath caught sharply.

Finally, in a voice trembling with exhaustion, she spoke, "I… I don't know. I just had another nightmare. Like always. But this time it felt worse. Like something snapped. Like my wolf—Yoka—she just… panicked. Bolted. Like there was a fire in my mind and she had to run."

She paused, swallowing hard, her voice cracking as she continued, "But I didn't get far. My body couldn't take it. Everything was spinning, suffocating… I couldn't breathe. Then I just… dropped."

My body went rigid. Her words—panic, inability to breathe, the wild surge of uncontrolled energy—everything suddenly made sense, yet seemed utterly impossible at the same time.

I pulled back slightly, just enough to stare into her wide, haunted eyes. My heart pounded, blood roaring in my ears as I forced out the question.

"Aria…" My voice emerged low, rough—more growl than words. "Are you telling me… you've never shifted before?"
