Chapter 1003: The Invisible Line

Chapter 1003: The Invisible Line

For some, life-altering moments would come as early as childhood.

Maybe it would happen the first time their beloved parents, who spoiled them their whole lives, would say "no."

Or maybe it would happen once the smartest or best kid moved on to higher education, stepping into a bigger institution where they would finally learn that they were only ever a big fish in a much smaller pond.

For others, it might take years.

Decades, even.

But Decorative Personnel D had always thought he had gone through that realization much earlier in life.

After all, he had ended up under the very boot of Cassian Veyra as a mere child.

He ended up paying a lot for it back then.

His self-confidence took a hit early, crushed under the presence of someone far more overwhelming than anything he had known.

But just as that psycho tanked his extroverted prospects at a young age, he also forced him to grow faster than the others.

He learned how to be in the shadows, how to get his way by assisting rather than confronting, and how to turn his desire to survive into a tactical advantage.

Thankfully, Cassian liked that about him, so when he was finally asked what kind of cybernetic modifications he wanted, he ended up foregoing the flashy ones and opting for stealth and disabling attacks.

For most of his life, it worked. He became part of an elite group, one that operated quietly and directly under the Federation’s future leader.

It wasn’t as glamorous as he originally imagined his life would end up being, but clearly, he had all that going for him. And when leadership eventually fell into Cassian’s hands, he would be in a favorable position.

That had been his life, and was supposed to be the trajectory of his life.

So, forgive him for thinking that his food chain had already been adjusted with Cassian at the very top. After all, even against humans, different races, or the corrupted and mutated, Cassian had long proven that he was the heir to the Federation for a reason.

Actually, Decorative Personnel D wasn’t really that off the mark, and maybe that would have been true had a certain citizen of the Empire not returned to literally make his own food chain.

But unfortunately for him, Luca Kyros did.

The pillars of the Empire that should’ve fallen didn’t.

The heir to Solaris ended up alive, kicking, and somehow terrifyingly upgraded.

In short, the Empire—as they would have known it in the future—ceased to exist in favor of this current inexplicable monstrosity.

And so, at the ripe age of twenty, Decorative Personnel D was once again restructuring his worldviews as he haphazardly rechecked his systems.

Cloaking: ACTIVE.

Signal masking: ACTIVE.

Presence dampening: ACTIVE.

Thermal suppression: ACTIVE.

All of them were fucking active, so just how was that insane cadet looking at him like he could see his soul?!

__

Well, unfortunately for him, thermal suppression wouldn’t really work well against a being with the sort of bloodline ability Luca had.

Even without sensors or devices, how could the heir of House Kyros miss changes in temperature around him?

Whether it was higher or lower, even the slightest inconsistency in a particular spot would alert the overly curious cadet that something was wrong, so there was really no way around that.

And that wasn’t even considering something far worse.

Because if Luca really wanted to, he could simply coat the entire arena with his spiritual energy and account for every single core stepping on the floor.

However, there was no need to fear something Luca likely wouldn’t even bother doing.

What mattered instead, and what the delegates probably didn’t realize, was just how impossible it would be to escape a little system that could freely access the very sensors attached to their bodies.

Honestly, D-29 didn’t even want to see that kind of information.

Where would the excitement be?

Where would the surprise go?

But unfortunately for the players, and for the allegedly innocent system, there had been no safeguards for entities like it.

And so, the poor decorative crew were simply lighting up its radar.

Then again, now that Luca had been made aware that others couldn’t really see them, the cursed crew also ended up lighting something else.

The despondent cadet’s heart.

With a fire that really, really burned.

__

Luca’s curiosity had been piqued to the point of requesting something that even he thought would probably sound absurd to his husband.

Xavier had been busy dealing with the Federation cadets in a way that tested their endurance and durability, while Luca observed and protected both his brother, Theo, and the flag.

That had been their earlier agreement.

But with the unfortunate case of no specimen wanting to visit them, and with the realization that they had no real data about these apparently invisible people, how could Luca possibly pass up the opportunity of a lifetime to gather information for free?

When else would he have the chance other than today?

Therefore, like the fox that he really was, Luca Kyros, the favorite being of one Xavier Solaris, suddenly called out, "Husband!"

The call was soft.

Milky, even.

If there was such a thing as something gentle in the middle of a battlefield where people continued to pummel each other while Princess Kira hyped herself up, then that sound would have been it.

In fact, it had been so quiet that it should have been easy to miss.

But the moment it reached him, the Imperial Crown Prince turned his head slightly, his attention shifting at once.

Xavier deflected an incoming kick from one of the cadets who thought he had found an opening. But just because the husband with built-in blinders was waiting to hear what his little wife wanted didn’t mean that he had stopped paying attention to his surroundings.

However, it became a different matter when the cadet attempted to speak over Luca.

And so, Xavier raised a hand and covered the attacker’s mouth, his gaze turning cold as he looked at the unfortunate man who dared to interrupt.

His head tilted slightly.

He clicked his tongue.

"!!!"

"Mnph!"

The repelled delegate, who could already see his future of crashing into something, could only think that this man was a monster.

But then—

The expression changed.

Instantly.

From something chilling to something gentle.

"Yes," Xavier said, his voice calm as he looked at Luca.

Far away, Luca perked up.

"...Can I step out of here for a bit?"

He asked it like a kid asking for permission to go play, his tone innocent, his gestures small but eager even from a distance.

Xavier had already noticed the faint frown that had been on his little wife’s face earlier. He had even considered sending someone over.

But since Luca had already asked—

"Of course, you can do as you like," he replied without hesitation.

At the same time, he tilted his head slightly in Kyle’s direction.

No words were needed.

Kyle, who had been guarding the jail, immediately understood.

After all, there was no better replacement.

Because honestly, no one who had been jailed would even think about leaving that place.

And just like that—

Luca brightened.

He actually squealed.

Then, without hesitation, he took his first step away from the invisible line he had not crossed since earlier.

"I’ll be back soon, guys! I just need to check on something!"

His voice was light.

Cheerful.

Completely harmless.

But to everyone else—

It felt like the entire stadium shook the moment his foot landed beyond that imaginary boundary.
