Chapter 800 800: I Can't Explain...
A small creature buzzed through the air, whizzing around Noble's head and then into her face.
Noble blinked, her face moving away from the tiny bee.
"Nectar!" the emotional Saint waved her hand to shoo the little critter. "What is wrong with you?"
She was not amused by her tiny friend's behavior. Nectar was buzzing at her without ceasing, pacing back and forth in the air like a toy on a wire. The creature seemed... angry?
Having finished her tiny tirade, Nectar went to rest on Fort's shoulder with something that sounded like a sneeze.
Fort's shoulders bounced up and down as he petted Nectar with one finger. "I think she is on my side."
"She cannot be!" Noble objected. "She is part of me!"
"I agree. If she joined with your core as you said, then she should be a representation of your emotions. You might want to be angry with me, but you cannot be. You are glad I chose what I did, admit it!" Fort raised one eyebrow at her.
"Help me out here, Leo!" Noble turned to the symncus.
Surely he would stand by her side! Helios snorted, lowered his head to his paws, and stretched out on the bed. He wasn't about to get involved in marital affairs.
"Traitor." Noble coughed.
"What was that?" Fort crossed his arms with a wide grin.
"Fine. You win. I am outnumbered anyway." The lovely Saint blew out her cheeks. "I think you are a fool, but I love that you wanted to take care of me. It was your love that got me through, and for that I am thankful. I don't think I could have done it without you. Thank you."
Nectar flew from the man's shoulder and tugged Noble's hair. The cheeky little thing already knew what she wanted to do.
Fort knew too. He leaned forward and kissed his wife, elated that she was in his arms once more.
The joy that came from Noble filled the room. However, instead of pressing against the other occupant, it invited him to join in her elation.
'Much better,' Noble was content with her progress.
Fort leaned back and smiled at his wife.
Nectar took her place on his shoulder and nuzzled against his shirt collar.
"Oh no, you don't!" Noble clicked her tongue. "If anyone is cuddling with my husband, it is me."
The woman curled her index finger, beckoning the little creature. Reluctantly, Nectar flew at Noble, dissolving into sparks as she touched the woman's skin.
"Cheeky little thing," Noble smiled.
Fort shrugged. "I like her a lot."
The woman rolled her eyes. "That's because she likes you."
"That does help," Fort ran his hands through his hair with a chuckle. "But she is part of you, and I find you utterly lovable."
Noble chuckled softly. "You are very good at flattery. It's almost like smoothing over situations is what you do for a living."
"My silver tongue is both a blessing and a curse. Alas, I do what I can," Fort winked. His expression softened. "But I am truly glad you didn't lose your relic when it bonded with you."
"Me too. I only just got her. It would have been terrible if she were gone so soon." Noble had barely gotten to know the little bee.
The Saint had not explored the relic's full capabilities, and more than that, she had already grown fond of the little creature...even if there was a little too much sass and spunk for something so small.
'The Spell created a doozy with that one. I hope Nectar isn't supposed to be a mirror of me. If so...well, I don't suppose there is much I can do about it.'
Noble had people who loved her just the way she was. She saw no reason to change just now.
Tugging at the blanket that had been draped across her shoulders at some point, Noble chewed her lip.
"What are you thinking about?" Fort adjusted to sit more naturally on the floor.
The woman scratched her nose. "I was thinking about how awkward it would be if..."
"Mom? Dad? I heard something and...WHAT HAPPENED?!" Standing in the doorway, Brock's eyes opened wide.
The room was truly a mess. Feathers from the mattress fluttered in the air, and pillows and blankets were thrown in every direction. Frayed ropes hung from the ceiling, testifying to the state of the broken pallet now shattered on the floor.
His outcry brought more footsteps, and soon Rain and Blaze were peering in through the doorway with horrified expressions.
Noble felt her ears turn red.
"I know what this looks like," Fort began, "but we can explain."
"Are you alright?!" Brock rushed over to help his father stand.
Rain and Blaze crowded around their mother, and soon everyone was on their feet.
"We are fine," Noble assured them. "It isn't a big deal, really. You see--"
"Leo! How could you?" Brock turned to the golden creature and placed his hands on his hips.
"Leo?" Fort and Noble exchanged glances.
"Don't you know you can sleep on my bed?" The boy continued. "It doesn't hang from the ceiling."
"Or mine!" Not wanting to be outdone, Blaze offered up his place as well. "I take up less space than Brock, too. He cornered the market on muscles."
"Don't sell yourself short, brother. Those biceps of yours are coming along." The elder twin pointed out.
"You really think so?" Blaze flexed his arm. "Maybe a little..."
Rain rolled her eyes, looking more like her mother than she had intended. "If you boys want to discuss muscle mass, maybe don't do it in the wreckage of mom and dad's bed."
Brock patted Helios's head. "Come on, boy. You can see which place suits you better."
The symncus looked at his master, and she nodded her head.
Rain ushered the boys and their pet out of the room. "Leave mom and dad in peace. Let them sort out whatever it was they were doing before… this… happened."
The girl winked, and Noble felt her face flush all over again.
'It was totally innocent!' she wanted to scream, but that would only make things worse.
She could explain things in the morning...maybe.
"Goodnight, everyone," the mother managed.
As the door shut, Noble covered her face. Fort burst out laughing.
"That was something right there!"
"If by something you mean mortifying, then yes."
"You are cute when you are embarrassed." Fort pulled his hand from his wife's face and kissed the back of her palm. "Of all the things that could have happened, this was the best case scenario."
Helios had not seemed to mind being blamed for the chaos. He had gotten some head pats, too, for the trouble.
"I suppose." Noble sighed. "It looks like I won't be sleeping tonight. Our usual guard has earned a night off…and I don't have anywhere to sleep anyway."
"Need me to stay up with you?" Fort offered.
"I'll be fine." His wife assured him. Then she looked at the room. "Unless that was your way of saying you don't want to sleep on the ruined furniture either."
Fort shrugged. "I mean, splinters aren't exactly my preferred sleeping arrangement."
Noble took her husband's hand. "Well then, some company sounds good. I'll make us some tea."
