Chapter 268: The Matchmaker
Chapter 268: The Matchmaker
"Who’s there?" Mrs. Jiang’s voice came from inside the house. She opened the door to find Zhu Sangu visiting and immediately broke into a smile, "Oh, Sangu, how come you have time to visit my place today?"
"Isn’t it because there’s a happy occasion!" Zhu Sangu’s bright red lips curved into a smile, and she flicked her worn-out handkerchief, playfully chiding Mrs. Jiang with a glance, "This is a big celebration, aren’t you going to quickly pour me a cup of good tea? The news of joy has already flown to everyone else’s house!"
Mrs. Jiang quickly turned her thoughts and rushed to welcome Zhu Sangu inside, "Don’t say that, Sangu. Please come inside and sit down. I’ll go get tea for you right away."
Mrs. Jiang ushered her in and hurriedly went to pour the tea.
In the nearby villages, Zhu Sangu was the sole matchmaker. Who didn’t know, whenever Zhu Sangu visited someone’s home, it surely meant there was joyous news for that household.
"Sangu, you’ve surely got a good girl in your hands..." Mrs. Jiang offered the tea with flattery; this was brought by Niannian from Young Master Nan’s place. She heard it was something precious, though she didn’t really understand what, but it tasted delightful. Especially after drinking, she felt incredibly refreshed.
Zhu Sangu didn’t rush to respond but took the tea with a suspenseful air, sipping slowly.
Then, her eyes lit up, and she drank several more sips in succession.
After finishing the cup, Zhu Sangu still seemed to want more.
Mrs. Jiang urged, "Sangu, what’s the situation? You have to at least give me a hint!"
"Dahu’s mom, why are you so impatient? Now that Sangu is here, there must be good news!" After saying that, Zhu Sangu passed the cup, "This tea is really nice, quickly pour me another bowl."
Mrs. Jiang reluctantly poured another cup of tea, handing it over, "Sangu, don’t just focus on the tea. Quickly tell me the good news, and if it truly comes to fruition, I’ll give you a big red packet!"
Upon hearing this, Zhu Sangu immediately put down the tea bowl, her already small eyes sparkling with brightness, asking, "Really?"
"Oh my!" Mrs. Jiang looked at her with some exasperation, "Sangu, take a look. Although our family isn’t extravagantly wealthy, we have no worries about food and drink. It wouldn’t be lacking a little reward for the matchmaker, right? Whoever becomes the bride in our household would surely enjoy a good life!"
"Dahu’s mom, with those words, Sangu can truly relax." Zhu Sangu replied with a smile.
"Whose daughter?" Mrs. Jiang couldn’t help but ask urgently.
Zhu Sangu glanced outside, seeing no one around, she leaned forward and said, "My niece from my maternal family, she’s 17 this year, a couple of months older than Dahu. She’s the eldest daughter at home, skilled at managing household chores and taking care of her younger siblings, she’s quite capable..."
Zhu Sangu praised her niece profusely, while Mrs. Jiang’s expression changed to icy.
Sitting to the side, she cast a sidelong glance at Zhu Sangu, her dissatisfaction growing deeper.
Regardless of whether Zhu Sangu was telling the truth about her niece being so wonderful, Mrs. Jiang didn’t wish to agree.
With Zhu Sangu’s appearance, how good could her niece possibly look?
Being short and stout, with sharp triangular eyes, protruding brow bones, a disagreeable demeanor, and especially that big mouth that could argue nonsense as if it were reason.
Seeing Mrs. Jiang’s expression, Zhu Sangu could guess what she was thinking and, undeterred, said, "Dahu’s mom, don’t judge me by my unattractive looks. My niece is indeed quite pretty, resembling her mother, tall and slender, with a cute round face; when she talks, she smiles with her eyes. Most importantly, she’s well-built and can bear sons. If your family weren’t decently well-off, I wouldn’t want my niece to marry over here."
