Chapter 1545 - 442: Fields Sown with Hope (Part 2)
The building wasn't very tall, only two stories. The first floor was a hall big enough to fit more than twenty tables, plus a spacious back kitchen, storage room, bathhouse, and a few guest rooms. The second floor was all guest rooms. Each one was narrow, but fully equipped enough to shelter travelers from wind and snow.
It just stood there quietly by the roadside, like a sturdy farmer, raising the first curl of cooking smoke in Wheat Field Village meant for travelers.
As one of the key projects for the local Life Professional Players, this construction had gathered quite a lot of the players' creativity and sweat.
After all, they unanimously believed that it wasn't enough to just build an inn; they had to make it feel authentic!
That really tested their understanding of architecture and architectural history, and on top of that, their understanding of the game "Catastrophe OL" and of Wheat Field Village itself.
Standing in front of the newly completed inn, [Gou Jianqiang] stroked his sharply defined jawline and said with a creak and a crack.
"Don't you think this name sounds kinda dirty?"
[Rustic and Wooden] stared at him, completely baffled.
"What's dirty about it?"
Gou Jianqiang snickered lewdly. "Rock… delay… heh heh… you know what I mean, bro!"
Brother Civil-Engineering was silent for a long time, then heaved a sigh and patted him on the shoulder.
"Alright, bro, say no more, I get you!"
Gou Jianqiang froze. He hadn't expected that reaction from this bastard, and instantly panicked.
"The fuck?! I've never used that stuff, okay? I'm just messing with the meme, don't fucking take it seriously!"
Brother Civil-Engineering looked at him with deep, caring eyes.
"Stop explaining. A normal person wouldn't even go there. Only your damn imagination would jump straight to that!"
Gou Jianqiang: "@#%!"
In the eyes of the onlookers, their diligent and charming ancestors, having once again completed an astounding "great project," were so excited that they were hugging each other.
They just couldn't figure out why, as the two Holy Spirits hugged, they somehow rolled together into the muddy patch beside them.
Old Hank was the first to react. A lightbulb went on in his head as he said,
"Maybe they're a married couple!"
That made perfect sense!
The Holy Lady never said the Holy Spirits who came back to help them were all grandpas. What if one of them was a grandma?
Those tangled white bones instantly turned into white arms in his eyes.
The mother next to him, who was holding a child, also caught on right away and hurriedly covered the kid's eyes.
"Don't stare!"
The "Pseudo-man" Players standing nearby with Translation Crystals all laughed so hard their stomachs hurt.
"Hahahahahahah, fuck!"
The imagination on these NPCs was way too wild!
And just like that, Wheat Field Village finally had its very first inn, and this rustic little village at last gained that classic fantasy RPG atmosphere.
Whether there were guests or not didn't matter; what mattered was the vibe!
While the Players were ridiculously satisfied with their masterpiece, Gunter was also deeply moved by these warm villagers. He hadn't expected them to take him so seriously that, based on a single promise, they'd build such a big house for a total stranger like him!
Even though it was the Holy Spirits who built it, considering that the Holy Spirits were the ancestors of Wheat Field Village's villagers, you could round it up and say the living villagers had basically done it too.
Looking at these forthright people, Gunter couldn't help but think of Grey Stone Town… of what Grey Stone Town had been like before its people "died".
This burly man over two meters tall suddenly felt like there was sand in his eyes.
And it wasn't just gratitude.
More than that, he was seeing hope!
"Everyone, thank you for thinking so highly of me. I don't have much with which to repay you, but I want to at least show some sincerity… At the very least, let me treat you all to a meal!"
Looking at the earnest expression on Gunter's face, Old Hank grinned and said,
"You're a mercenary, what do you know about cooking? And where would you even get ingredients?"
Julian quickly jumped in to defend his master when he heard that.
"No way! My master's cooking might not taste good, but it's enough to fill you up just fine! And there are Demon Beasts in the Forest—if we hunt one or two, won't that do it?"
The surrounding villagers burst out laughing at the young man's words. No wonder the kid had chugged that watery wheat porridge like plain water when he'd first arrived—turns out he'd had too much wild game.
As enviable as that sounded, it didn't stop them from roasting him.
"It's not that simple. Cooking isn't just about having meat. You can't just boil it in plain water, can you? That'd be pathetic."
"Exactly! Even if you had money, the market here hasn't even opened yet. With money in hand, you still wouldn't know who to buy from!"
"Oh right, the greens in my veggie patch are just sprouting some nice leaves. Why don't we just throw a feast?"
"Great idea, haha! I remember the potatoes in Old Hank's field have already grown tubers about the size of bird eggs! I haven't had stewed potatoes in ages!"
"Tsk… my mouth is watering already. We've been eating wheat porridge for so long! About time we improved the menu… Wait, how the hell do you know how big my potatoes are?"
"Heh, I accidentally felt them at night. Relax, I didn't steal any. I put them all back!"
"Only an Undead would believe you! Keep your hands off my potatoes, don't even think about it—that's what I'm saving to brew liquor!"
That was what he said, but Old Hank obviously wasn't a stingy man, and he'd planted quite a lot anyway. In the end, he gritted his teeth and decided to dig some up to satisfy everyone's cravings.
And so, amid everyone's noisy chatter, what started out as Gunter's proposal to treat everyone to a meal turned into everyone scraping things together from all over and pooling it into one big table of food.
By the time he realized what was happening, Gunter could only smile wryly as he found that he hadn't managed to repay even the smallest favor. Instead, he owed them all even more…
