Chapter 1498 431: The Fortress That Fell Without Assault_2

The soldiers on the castle walls immediately became tense, gripping their firearms and crossbows, ready for battle!

Brennan grinned broadly as if he didn't see them, without any protection from bodyguards beside him.

He halted, raised his head to look at the walls, and his loud voice rang out like a battle drum.

"Count Thelon Gard! If you still remember your honor, and are still a man with some balls, then step forward and speak!"

A commotion erupted on the walls.

After a moment, Count Thelon, clad in military attire, reluctantly appeared behind the battlements, surrounded by a group of knights.

This was his second "meeting" with Brennan.

The savage draped in bear fur was still as crude as when they met last time!

Rayden, standing behind Thelon, frowned.

He could sense a change in the aura of that rebel leader. Although his strength was not markedly different from the last encounter, the nature of the power seemed different.

He couldn't quite grasp what that feeling was, but the repulsive stench had vanished.

Replaced by a bewildering sense of... sanctity?

Rayden shook his head, dismissing the bizarre thought from his mind.

He'd rather believe he's mistaken.

"Damned traitor! Cannibal scum! You dare demand I speak? Ha! There's nothing to discuss with a beast, I'd rather hold here till the end of time! When His Majesty the King's reinforcements arrive, they'll hang all you wretches from the gallows!"

Thelon roared with such vigor that his rotund body no longer seemed comedic.

Even though only he knew how hollow his threats truly were.

If reinforcements really existed, he would not have waited until now, nor would he be driven into the castle by a band of armed peasants.

Only demons funded by Hell, or devils backed by Chaos, could leave him so vulnerable!

Holy Daughter?

It's such an embarrassment for these peasants to find a fake clergy member, a peasant woman, to flaunt!

Facing the bluffing threats, Brennan merely shrugged indifferently and then shouted to the back.

"I told you, Your Highness, they refuse to listen to reason... just let Saint Sis punish them directly."

Thelon sneered.

"What nonsense are you babbling about! If Saint Sis intends to punish, it'll be you who gets punished—"

Before he could finish, the rest of his sentence got caught in his throat, his enlarged eyes slightly protruding.

In the camp outside the castle, a young woman began walking towards the gate.

The woman wore a simple nun's robe, her tranquil face radiated calmness and kindness, just like a Holy Mother stepping out of an oil painting.

Thelon's Adam's apple moved, swallowing back the unfinished sentence, his face showed nothing but disbelief and a trace of unconcealable fear.

This... how could it be possible!

He was certain that all the clergy on his lands, from priests to nuns, including the chapel servants... as long as they hadn't been killed by the Green Forest Army, were nearly all inside this castle!

Where did this person come from?!

Not only was Count Thelon incredulous, but Rayden standing behind him, and the surrounding garrison too erupted in disbelief, exchanging looks filled with skepticism.

"The rumors... are actually true?!"

"Impossible! She must be a fake they found somewhere!"

"But... don't you think she resembles nuns more than those inside the castle? They only pray to statues, achieving nothing, yet she can conjure bread!"

"Wait, do you really believe she can produce bread?"

"What choice do I have? Are the foods in those refugees' bowls an illusion?"

Initially, they suspected Holy Maiden Carian was merely a myth fabricated by the rebels, until she appeared right before their eyes.

All the rumors about the Salvation Army were suddenly endowed with a sacred filter at that moment, and became corroborative evidence alongside Holy Maiden Carian standing before them!

That sacred filter naturally shrouded her too, not originating from any visible Holy Light, but her very existence became that light of eminence.

"Count Thelon Gard, I come in my Lord's will, to end the suffering of this land."

"Shut up! You... "

Thelon gasped heavily, glaring at Carian, yet failing to voice 'imposter'.

What if it's true?

He felt muddled, not daring to foreclose completely. If he affronted the Divine, it would doom him.

Swallowing a mouthful of saliva, Thelon chose to skip the insignificant question, sternly asking her instead.

"Who are you! Who is supporting you! Why betray your King to join this rabble?"

"I am Carian, a nun who heard the Divine's grace in dire straits. I swear allegiance to no worldly king, naturally betraying no one, I only serve the Divine in my heart."

Carian calmly faced the unsettled count, her peaceful and tender voice seemed to carry a power to soothe minds.

Yet that mind-soothing power threw all the knights atop the castle wall into disarray.

"She heard the Divine's grace?!"

"Is it true..."

"I feel she's not lying... feigning God's will should send one to Hell!"

"No wonder... she wants to give land to the people, only God would do such a thing."
