Chapter 1471 - 424: Shadows of War (Part 3)
As for where Lady Carian's food comes from?
Though no one cared to ask, that food clearly didn't appear out of thin air...
Just as Thomas stepped off the carriage, the mercenary leader with the flintlock gun approached him.
"Boss, we need to talk."
Guessing what the man wanted to say, Thomas sighed and replied.
"Go ahead, I'm listening."
The mercenary leader immediately said.
"We are a caravan, not a World Relief Army! What I mean is, I only took pay to escort the caravan, I never told my men they'd be protecting an army!"
"I know, and I don't want it either, but what choice do I have?" Thomas replied, frowning.
"Come up with a solution quickly!" The mercenary leader glanced towards the direction outside the camp, his face serious, "With so many people following, I won't even mention the water and food consumption, the problem is we're too conspicuous!"
Looking at the silent caravan boss, he continued in a serious tone.
"Forgive me for being blunt, right now we are like a torch in the night! Whether it's the Provincial Governor of Twilight City or those who call themselves the Green Forest Army, I bet neither of them sees us favorably!"
Thomas swallowed.
"We have Mr. Colin, even if they dislike us, they wouldn't..."
The mercenary leader said in a low voice.
"Yes, but don't think those people don't have their own tricks! A bunch of real peasants can't possibly defeat a lord's army. When have you ever heard of a group of farmers overthrowing their lord with just grass forks? Failed rebellions aside, any successful one almost always has a devil standing behind it!"
Thomas' face immediately changed, and his voice trembled.
"You mean... they have demons from Hell behind them?!"
The mercenary leader shook his head and said with a bitter smile.
"Demons from Hell would be fine, but what if it's... Chaos. You must have heard about what happened at Brass Pass? A little problem occurred recently, even the Great Sage was alarmed!"
At the mention of Chaos, he involuntarily shivered, as if the word itself carried unimaginable magic power.
He forgot who told him, but he remembered hearing from a senior that demons from Hell aren't that scary; those guys are merely after faith or, at worst, to give someone a scare, never doing thankless things.
However, Chaos is different. For instance, the "Flame of Destruction" attacking Brass Pass was openly trying to bring apocalypse to the world.
They seek nothing, want nothing, only to turn the world west of Brass Pass into something like the Dimension Desert!
"Crown of Pride" and "Deceitful Fog" are likely the same, and his intuition tells him that what's rampant in the Twilight Province is probably the most vicious "Eternal Hunger Claw"!
Hearing the mercenary leader's words, a trace of fear rose in Thomas' heart.
"Then what do you think... we should do?"
The mercenary leader said in a cold, hard voice.
"...If it comes to it, parting ways is an option. The longer we wait, the harder it'll be to separate from them."
Hearing this, Thomas couldn't help but smile bitterly.
"I don't think that's a good idea. You saw, Mr. Colin seems to support her cause... I mean, he might not choose to come with us. Having the Mage's protection is better than not having it. Honestly, if I had known things were this bad here, I should have brought more people."
This is what troubled him the most; the mysterious Mage was inexplicably fond of this "Nun" they picked up along the way.
At first, he was too lazy to bother with that woman, but since one funeral, things changed.
His appreciation wasn't limited to words; he even started actively funding Carian's charitable endeavors.
No one knew where her food came from, but Thomas knew all too well—
All that food was bought by the generous Mr. Colin, at a price above market value, from him.
Not only that, but he also bought the wagons used for transporting food, lending one to Carian as her mobile prayer room.
Thomas didn't know what happened between them, but for a long time, Carian had been frequently visiting the Mage's carriage. This wasn't something that just started recently.
He actually understood.
Besides being a bit rustic, the girl was neither lacking in looks nor figure, otherwise, Lady Lina wouldn't have chosen her as a valuable "commodity."
Seemingly aware that his attractiveness couldn't compete with a young and beautiful nun, the mercenary leader was silent for a while, then finally sighed.
"...You're the boss, you decide."
Watching the mercenary leader walk away, Thomas shook his head, sighed, and went to the campfire.
Though he was the boss of the caravan, there were things beyond his decision-making power.
The fate of this caravan was no longer something he could control...
As he crouched by the campfire, eyes in the darkness watched his back.
The conversation between these two humans was heard in full, Sarah quietly concealed herself, disappearing into the darkness.
On the other side, in Colin's carriage, Carian was devoutly holding a "Holy Word Book," attentively listening to Mr. Colin, who sat across from her, explain the scriptures in the book and learning the words within.
It's embarrassing to admit.
Though she considered herself a devout believer, she didn't even know what Saint Sis truly was.
