The Lord Demon King is Unfathomable!

Chapter 1447 418: The Fleeing "Nun" (Part 4)

Chapter 1447 418: The Fleeing "Nun" (Part 4)

Even though she was aware that this group of people probably weren't good either.

"Please... I beg you... For the sake of Saint Sis, take me away from here!"

"We have to help this poor soul," the young mercenary looked at his companions and whispered.

The older mercenary ignored him and instead walked toward the approaching convoy owner.

"There's a situation."

"I know," Thomas directed a questioning gaze at him and continued, "I want to ask, what happened?"

The older mercenary glanced at the woman at the edge of the camp and whispered.

"No need to ask, it's someone from Lina, you catch my drift... This woman is trouble, and our problem is that Lord Cabbin's cavalry is surely waiting ahead."

He didn't finish his sentence, but Thomas understood clearly, a look of worry appeared on his weathered face.

Cabbin is Sir Richter's Guard Captain, he would never allow a "nun" to escape to the neighboring land. Not only because it would look bad, but more importantly, it sets a bad precedent that impacts his authority on this land.

As expected, this woman is either a fugitive now or a "runaway" from the lord's land. The soldiers waiting ahead would surely stop them, and even if they didn't find her with them, they'd surely seize the opportunity to extort some money.

If they don't want to pay, they'd have to turn back to the nearby outpost for interrogation, and a delay of a few days for such a big convoy on the road would mean a loss greater than the road fee itself.

The mercenary was hinting that the best course of action was to capture the "criminal" for Lord Cabbin. Otherwise, pretending not to see or helping her escape wouldn't be good options.

But upon seeing that pitiful soul, Thomas found it hard to be heartless.

He was a devout believer.

He could turn a blind eye to the "chaos" of the traveler camp but found it hard to let a poor soul fall into hell.

"Could we be overthinking this?" he said empathetically, "If she really escaped Lina's grip, could she have made it here?"

The mercenary let out a sigh.

"Sir, I'm only sharing this out of concern for our reward. I wish to deliver this batch of goods quickly and get the remaining payment... So, let's not worry about how she got here, and not create trouble for ourselves?"

Thomas was silent for a while, thinking of a compromise.

"We can take her along, and if we encounter soldiers, then hand her over."

The mercenary shrugged.

"That's a good option... But to prevent her from getting suspicious, escaping, and causing more trouble, I suggest you don't let her see through your intentions."

Although he preferred to tie her up directly, and decide on freeing or resolving it once confirmed as safe.

Thomas nodded, bypassed him, stepped in front of the sorrowful girl, cleared his throat, and asked knowingly.

"Miss, who are you, what's your name, where did you come from, and why do you cry... so sadly?"

"I, I'm Carian..."

The girl's shoulders trembled, her lips pale, her eyes evasive as she began narrating her tragic story.

According to her, her hometown suffered a severe famine, and she escaped her homeland because she couldn't survive.

This was a common reason, or rather excuse.

Some displaced people, unable to prove their free status, would claim they encountered a famine, since it was the sole excuse Saint Sis granted them to leave their lord's land.

Otherwise, they'd have to prove they were free citizens, or registered adventurers with a guild, or mercenaries with employment contracts, or possess the lord's letter of introduction.

Sometimes, even these measures are ineffective, as even on land directly governed by the Imperial, not all places are as civilized as the Holy City.

"Just... just a bite to eat will do! I can help you wash clothes, cook, do any chores, I don't need money!"

Thomas looked at her silently, feeling regret in his heart.

Honestly, her acting wasn't convincing; even if he wanted to turn a blind eye, he found it hard to lower the muzzle of the flintlock gun even an inch.

The cotton robe she couldn't part with had already betrayed her identity; her claim of "starving for three days and nights" was perhaps the only truth from her lips.

Leave it to Saint Sis' decision...

If soldiers were waiting ahead, he could only hand her over. If not, then her escape to freedom was considered God's will.

But...

Would the esteemed Saint Sis forgive these blasphemous folks?

Thomas sighed, hesitated, and finally took out a piece of dry bread from his pocket, breaking it in half, handing her half.

"Eat first."

He watched the girl devour hastily, speaking with a muddled yet gentle tone, "We'll handle our meals. You... can help with laundry if needed."

"Thank you, sir! You're truly kind!" Carian expressed her gratitude, almost ready to kneel.

Thomas couldn't accept such a significant gesture and quickly advised her to stop, and sit in the wagon to shield from the wind.

Once settling this "unexpected guest," he happened to pass by Mr. Colin's carriage, hesitated for a moment, and walked toward the mage engrossed in reading.

"Sir, there was a small incident in the camp earlier, as you might have seen, but I still have to inform you... However, rest assured, we'll handle it properly and not inconvenience you."

Out of respect for the "partner," he narrated the event entirely to Colin, including the girl's background and his decision.

Of course, he withheld some information, like the plan he and his mercenaries had decided, and his realization of the girl's deception.

All sounds in the camp escaped Sarah's ears, though her indifferent face seemed uninterested in humans' sorrow.

However, the "Dragon God," an ally of Saint Sis in the past, showed empathetic sympathy.

Famine...

Truly cruel.

She couldn't imagine what a famine felt like, but knew the discomfort of hunger. Occasionally, the Demon King returned with food late deliberately, while she waited hungry till dark.

Luo Yan also understood the situation.

However, he didn't speak, merely closed the book in his hand, curiously sizing up this astute businessman.

"Knowing she's trouble, why did you take her in?"

He recalled how hesitant this gentleman was towards him earlier. If he hadn't shown a trick, the polite refusal might have escaped his lips.

Surely he doesn't appear more troublesome than a "nun"?

Thomas chuckled awkwardly, avoiding the sharp eyes, murmuring while looking at the nearby campfire.

"Sir, hearts are made of flesh. I couldn't bear to see her escape hell only to fall right back into it... Lords don't care about their people's lives, even for reputation she'd be doomed a thousand times."

Luo Yan's eyes flickered with surprise.

"Didn't expect you to have such noble virtues."

"Virtues... hardly."

Thomas scratched his cheek, a bit embarrassed, muddling his words, "Sir, despite being a trader, I grew up reading the epics of heroes."

After leaving these words, Thomas hurried away.

Sarah watched his back, a sarcastic smile curved her lips, she then turned her gaze to the Demon King beside.

The Demon King didn't speak, he simply flipped open the unfinished book, continuing the nearing end of the heroes' epic.

Soon they'd reach the Ryan Kingdom.

Before entering the Rhode Kingdom, his first task was learning Rhode Kingdom's history. And now, he was doing the same.

"Seems there are good people even in lands abandoned by Holy Light," Taufu praised sincerely and spoke astonishly, "I thought those folks obsessed with Holy Light would devour her!"

Her mind was filled with pale limbs and... Ugh, curiosity!

Although they'd left the traveler camp dozens of miles ago, apparently the repressing Dragon God still hadn't moved on.

Peeking at the naive yet non-simple dragon face, Luo Yan smiled knowingly and flipped another page.

"Can't say for sure."
